Am almost 39 weeks and am booked for a cs at 40 weeks. Had ds by "emergency" cs following a failed induction at 41 weeks (I was a non-starter!) and he was 10lbs. They are reckoning on another big baby (but I haven't had a growth scan or anything so can't be sure.) Have got another 8 days to manage a vbac but am lurching between desperately hoping I go into labour and praying that I make it to 40 weeks and the section.

Would really appreciate a happy birth story of someone who popped out a big baby with ease! Or even better, someone who went overdue with their first, was a failed induction and gave birth by cs to a whopper and then followed it up by giving birth to a 6lber in 3 hours with no pain relief or stitches?!! Well a girl can dream!

If it's any help,dh's best friend's wife is a m/w. She was on duty the night a woman delivered a 16lb-er naturally. Must have been GD - surely?

Kbear77 · 25/02/2006 06:36

First son, had to be induced, was 11days overdue. Tried gas, made me sick. After 5 hours labour I was only 4cm and in so much pain asked for epidural which offered some relief for a little while but by the time I was to have him after 12 1/2 hrs it had completelty worn off. He was 10lb 3oz, naturally. I had little tears and needed 9 stitches - one here, two there etc. Another mum in the nursery with her baby born a day abefore mine asked if he was 3 months old hehehe. He didn't stay big though, he's often the smallest amongst other kids )
Second son, 7 days overdue, was also induced. Not even 3hours labour, no gas or anything - no time! haha, was asking to be checked as pain was intense and if I had hours to go wanted epidural but midwife said "Er, no time for that, he'll be here in a minute" She called for obstetritian to attend shortly and no sooner had she hung up the phone she just caught him. He just slipped right out, I didn't oficially push as I was trying to wait for her, but I had no say. He was 7lb 9oz. Probably no wonder it was so easy as big brother had already paved the way.
After having ds1 could barely move, felt like I'd been hit by a bus, reversed over by a truck and then some.
After ds2, felt great, as if only done a few too many sit ups. If only my body looked the part at that time too though hehehe.
Both my boys are on the small side compared to most other kids in their class - but not underweight or anything.
Yes CaptainDippy I saw the 11lb 4oz post... and nearly choked! Definately an incredible woman to manage that!

doolaly · 25/02/2006 13:47

I had no pain relief the last two times. ne at home one in hospital (no cover). Not big babies though 7lb 15 and 7lb 6. I felt in complete control unlike my first when I was full of dia-morphine. i would recommend natural labour and home births to anyone!

Blandmum · 25/02/2006 14:04

My mother was 12 pound , born at home, no midwife, no doctor, just the lady from next door!

Does that count!???

She was the last of 4

DS (1st child) was 9 lb. That's not huge, but I'm a pretty little person "down there". He came out after a 3 1/4 hour total labor, and I delivered him completely naturally and had a pretty quick recovery. (DD was only 7 1/2 lb, and at less than 2 hrs was an absolute breeze even though she came out face up and with her hand to her face.)

I'm www's sister and can report that I had my ten pound son at home five months ago. I didn't know he was going to be that big - my first was seven twelve - but I was determined to have another home birth. He was six days late and I thought my waters had broken thirty hours before. The hospital wanted to induce but I refused (After researching the risks via the National Institute for Clinical excellence) In the event I went into labour naturally and it was discovered that the 'break' was just a hind water leak. It was tough but with the help of an excellent midwife I delivered him without a single stitch - both midwives said it's absolute rubbish that big babies need to be born in hospital. They also told me fwiw that your are much more likely to 'tear' in hospital with drugs because you can't feel the pain - when you can feel it you ease it out pretty slowly.

DD1 - 9lbs 4 oz - Tens machine only - altho' m/w told me after that DH had put pads in wrong place (I wondered why I couldn't see ! ) - 7 hour labour

DS - 8lbs 14oz - no pain relief (DH just getting TENS out when I started pushing - took 1 push only !) No stitches

So don't panic & you can do it !

spidermama · 25/02/2006 22:44

KK One push only? Wow! Respect.

alicemama · 25/02/2006 22:48

dd2: 5hr labour, tens machine, 20 mins of pushing no tears, 8lb, 13oz, 11 days overdue!

hester · 25/02/2006 22:52

Mine was a 7lb weakling, but I have two friends who gave birth to whoppers in the last six months. One was 10lb5oz, the other 10lb 9oz. Both second babies, both straightforward vaginal deliveries.

Good luck

zubb · 25/02/2006 22:53

ds1 - 8lb 15oz - 2.5 hours, 3 days early
ds2 - 9lb 9oz - 1hr 45 mins, 8 days late
ds3 - 9lb 2oz - 1 hour, 4 days late
all without pain relief, and only had a couple of stitches with ds1.

mears · 26/02/2006 21:12

anchovies - am wondering why you have a C/S planned for 40 weeks if you are considering VBAC? We would let you go till 42 weeks for natural onset of labour.

That said, I delivered a friend of mine's 4th baby naturally who was 10lb 5oz. (1st baby was C/S). 2nd & 3rd were 8lbs + 9lbs.

She then went on to have another big boy of 12lb 2oz - NATURALLY. It can be done

mears · 26/02/2006 21:14

I looked after another friend whose 1st DS was born with the aid of forceps weighing 10lb 13oz. Her next baby was born naturally weighing 8lb 6oz. They don't always get heavier.

bubblepop · 27/02/2006 14:07

had a wonderful waterbirth with my 8lb 10oz daughter.she was quite a bit heavier than the others, can't say though that it was any more difficult to give birth to her because of her weight.a truly amazing experienceGrin

eidsvold · 28/02/2006 12:38

MIL = both babes over 9lb and both home births - no real tearing, up and about quickly.

Friend - 12lb 2 oz again very little damage and gas and air - quick birth - quick recovery.

poppiesinaline · 28/02/2006 12:48

I was chatting to someone over the weekend whose first baby was 11 lb 3 oz Shock - natural delivery. Her others were 8lb plus something (shes got 4).

rachp · 28/02/2006 14:14

Last baby was 10lbs 2.5oz (5kg). First two were caesareans for different reasons, so this was first labour (infact first ever contraction!)

All went beautifully, no stitches, gas and air only, I would do it again tomorrow and said that a few minutes after she was out. Honestly, the best thing I have ever done.

rachp · 28/02/2006 14:18

sorry just a bit more info ... first baby was cs 8lbs 13oz, second cs as went 10 days overdue, he was 9lbs 1 oz, with the third I got myself a bit more informed, learned about the relative risks of cs and VBAC, and was determined to wait it out. She came out 15 days 'overdue' - ie when SHE was ready, and still covered in vernix. Some people just cook their babies more slowly Wink

Wish you all the best!

Bozza · 28/02/2006 14:20

Well my first was 9 lb 10 and I had an epiosiotomy and lots of stitches. My second was predicted to bigger - ie 10lbs plus. She was born at home with a 4 minute second stage weighing 8 lb 12 and I had no stitches. I had a 5 hour labour and was sat at the table eating porridge with my DH and DS at 7 and DD was born at 7.46 am. Is that good enough? Grin Unfortunately this was followed up by horrendous piles Sad

Also I think I am quite stoic.

Thanks everyone, some very inspiring stories!

Only have 2 more days now until section on friday and tbh it doesn't look like I'm going to get the VBAC I would have really liked (head still high today). Decision to have section on friday at 40 weeks was based on a mixture of things, big baby combined with a bicornuate uterus being the main one. They wanted to section me much earlier but I fought hard to wait til now - not that it did any good!

Thanks anyway though, will let you know if my hard work in terms of self induction gets me anywhere in the next 2 days - labour vibes please!

anchovies I wanted a vbac for dd2 after an emergency c-section for dd1. Dd2 was predicted to be on the big side - with a large head ( off the chart) and I waited and waited and she too was still very high and I ended up having a c-section at 14 days over. I made the decision for hte c-section all the while wanting a vbac. I had a toddler with sn who was 2 1/2 and not walking and needed to be taken to therapy and playgroup etc and so the perceived recovery from a vbac was preferred to the supposed 6 week c-section recovery. I was fine by three weeks post 2nd c-section.

I am not disappointed I had my two by c-section. Had I not had dd1 by c-section I would not have her at all. I do not feel less of a woman or mother for not having had a vaginal birth and get annoyed when people assumed I am upset and regret never having laboured..... I am a mum - doesn't matter how my babies were born... To me the birth was just a very small part of their lives and it is the rest of their lives that are sooo important compared to a few hours. I know there are woman that do not feel like I do BUT i think every woman's birth is unique and worthwhile whether vaginal or c-section.
