I went to hospital yesterday afternoon and was sent home as my cervix still had a way to go. Then the contractions stopped. Both dh and had wound ourselves up I think so we went to the pub across the road, had a lovely meal and a little wine. We returned feeling much more relaxed.
I went to bed at 10pm but I was woken at 1am by dh coming to bed. Then they started again.
By 2am I couldn't sleep, I phoned the hospital again and suggested I got in the bath with paracetamol. Basically I was contracting still fairly weakly (I realise that now) about 1/2 hourly. I managed to go back to bed and sleep until 5.30am.
This time the contractions were much more frequent about 5-6 minutes apart. I phoned the hospital, a midwife phoned me back.
I understand now that I have been naive thinking I should go into hopsital before. I have hours of pain at home to go through before I am in 'established' labour. Dh can't help but treat me like I'm a hyperchondriac but I still have ages to go.
It's just dawning on me what a lonely experience this labouring at home is.

Congratulations Mrs D - was wondering how it had all gone. You should submit your story to one of the pregnancy and baby mags - it is very good and captures the spirit of the event wonderfully

Welcome Rhuaridh - welcome to the world and may you have a long, happy and healthy life ahead of you

SorenLorensen · 12/02/2006 21:28

Oh congratulations Mrs D! You wrote your birth story beautifully - it's made me cry too. This thread is what MN is all about - do print it off and keep it, won't you?

Welcome to the world, Rhuaridh George

Bugsy2 · 12/02/2006 21:32

Amazing story MrsD - glad all went well. Congratulations to you & your family.

lizziebeth · 12/02/2006 21:35

That is amazing MrsD!! Can I ask a quick q ... did the midwife get it wrong when she said you were 4cm ... or did you go to 10cm in a v short space of time? It's incredible what the body can do!

Piffle · 12/02/2006 21:46

Fabulous story Mrs D brought tears to my eyes, nearly wet myself at the marvellous image of your darling Dh standing there "looking stricken" whilst holding your mobile and purse!
Well done you he is truly splendid!
clucketty cluck cluck

What a brilliant birth story MrsD - even me as a hardened midwife has a tear in my eye

So glad you went to hospital at the time you did. Lizziebeth, it is not uncommon for labour to progress rapidly from 4cm when you have had a baby before.

I definitely would send that story to a birth magazine - so inspiring. Brought back my own deliveries - in my day we didn't have the luxury of a pool though
