Am going to be induced tomorrow and was wondering if they keep you in until the baby's born or are you allowed to go home whilst the pessaries work their magic?

I was kept in the whole time, I think that is pretty standard. Good luck!

Marneychristmas · 11/12/2005 21:12

Think they keep you in but the pessaries can take a while to work, they like to moniter the babys heart beat etc..

biglipskissinunderthemistletoe · 11/12/2005 21:13

same to me too as i was kept in...

biglipskissinunderthemistletoe · 11/12/2005 21:13

so you gotta take your bag with you too!

COPPERfeelunderSantasTOP · 11/12/2005 21:13

Once they start using the pessaries you usually have to stay in until the baby is born. Good luck.

SnowQueenVictoria · 11/12/2005 21:13

Once they start they have to keep you in, however long it takes to start.

Pennies · 11/12/2005 21:14

and... how long did it take??

hoXMASchick · 11/12/2005 21:14

i was kept in, but allowed to wander the corridors... in fact, dp & i went & drank coffee & sent text messages from the cafe, it wasn't too bad. pessaries didn't work though!

Pennies · 11/12/2005 21:14

oh blimey. turns out I''m bricking myself.

For me ...............a long time, they started with the pessaries on Thursday night, and he was born on Saturday morning at sunrise.

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 11/12/2005 21:15

Yes, you have to stay in. I thought they sent you home, so went to hospital armed with only my handbag. I had to send DP to get my stuff, only for him to come back 1/2 hour after he got back home as my waters had broken. Hope it works as quick for you as it did for me! (Went in at 7pm and was in labour by 9.30pm!)

Hulababy · 11/12/2005 21:17

Yes I was kept in too. During the day I wandered about, went to the hospital cafe with DH, etc. I had 3 lots pf the pessary so was in a while!

Pennies · 11/12/2005 21:18

please please please let it be quick. had natural birth for DD and it took 70 hours of contractions from start to finish. can't handle that again.

It took ages the first time (went in on Friday morning and ds1 was born late on Sunday night) but was much faster with ds2 as the labour only lasted 6 hours.

SueW · 11/12/2005 21:20

I was induced with gel, monitored for 30-60 mins, left the hospital, went for lunch at Pizza Express with my mum then caught a bus to go Xmas shopping in Harrods (for one of their bears for my waiting-to-be-born). Walked all round there then got in a taxi back to the hospital. Nada....!!

Took two more shots to get me going.

louismummy · 11/12/2005 21:21

i had a pessary at 6pm ds born 5.38am so not long.. i escaped for about an hour or so to get more food supplies since all the cafes ect closed in the hospital....

SnowQueenVictoria · 11/12/2005 21:21

It can take a while to start, but that doesnt mean that once it starts you will have a long drawn out labour.

Marystoothyboychild · 11/12/2005 21:23

I had the first dose of gel at about 6pm, it didn't work so had another dose at 8am (had to stay in overnight). Contractions then started about 2 hours later.
Good Luck!

Pennies · 11/12/2005 21:24

some mixed experiences here. it's an odd feeling knowing that the while thing starts tmorrow though, regardless of the duration. I really hope I go into labour spontaneously tonight. send me some virital baby out vibes!

They kept me in as well because they like to monitor the baby every hour for a short while where we are. I went in on the Wednesday morning had the first pessary at lunch time and the second one at about 6pm neither seemed to be having much effect, so I had a bath which really speeded things up, I ended up going from 2cm to 8cm in under an hour!!!! Took dh and midwife to get me out of the bath and ds was nearly born in the lift .

crumpet · 11/12/2005 22:00

I had to stay in, but during the day dh and I went out for walks in the park, out to lunch etc so it wasn't too bad (dd took her time mind you, so we were there for a few days). Did sleep at the hospital though and had to be there for the various rounds but after that we were free. Think most people get started fairly soon after being induced, so you may end up not having the option of getting out & about!

Good luck tomorrow.

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 11/12/2005 22:02

Nope, in hospital for me!

Went in at 5pm Thursday night with DD1 and had her at 2.49am Saturday.... Good luck for tomorrow though xxx

Hulababy · 11/12/2005 22:05

Lots of people seem to have taken same length of time as me here I went in for first pessary at 5pm on the Wednesday, and then DD was born Friday night at 8:45pm (by CS in end though as induction didn't work).

pupucelovesruDOuLaph · 11/12/2005 22:08

Why have you agreed to an induction ?
