Gt Cortina and Ford Capri plus instructor's Ford Escort.

Volvo 440 with no power steering (our family car at the time). It really was like driving a tank, though a pretty nippy one. It was, ironically, much cheaper to insure than the little cars my friends learnt in.

Bright red ford XR3i. Don’t know how I got insured.

Insurance hadn’t got silly then.

My first insurance policy after passing my test at 17 covered me for any motor vehicle owned or driven by me.

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 24/08/2025 13:59

A Renault 5. In 1985. Had it for years, very reliable.

GCAcademic · 24/08/2025 14:00

Another Vauxhall Corsa in the early 90s learner here!

lacksomjam · 24/08/2025 14:00

A talbot alpine, with a dodgy third gear

Coconutter24 · 24/08/2025 14:02

I have no idea I honestly can’t remember. I can’t even remember the colour possibly blue or black 🤷‍♀️

Mustbethat · 24/08/2025 14:06

A daihatsu? Do they even exist still?

none of this power assisted steering or auto stop. You took your foot of the brake the thing rolled backwards down the hill 😂

LittleCarrot12 · 24/08/2025 14:07

Rover 25. Still my best car

cotedazur28 · 24/08/2025 14:08

My mum’s F reg Ford Fiesta. I loved that car! It was 1989.

Sushiqueen · 24/08/2025 14:27

Ford Fiesta (instructors car) and Ford Escort ( my dads car)

WhatAWetLettuce · 24/08/2025 14:30

Series III landrover, it was a tank. I kept it for 20 years!

DelphiniumBlue · 24/08/2025 14:35

I learned in my Mum's mini, and whatever the driving instructor's car was.
My Dad had a Wartburg which he wouldn't let me drive because you had to double de-clutch, which he thought was too difficult for me.

bitterexwife · 24/08/2025 14:36

Nissan Sunny, 5 doors, 1.6, electric windows that used to drop all of a sudden. My friend from college, I’d give a lift home to as long as he held the passenger window up. He got wet in winter

RedRiverShore5 · 24/08/2025 14:41

VW Beetle which I drove with L plates with DH, in the winter the choke was held out with a clothes peg or it wouldn't keep going. and I can't remember the driving instructor car, probably a Metro or similar.

Nourishinghandcream · 24/08/2025 14:43

A old 1960's Austin Mini 1100 estate (my first car).

Did as much driving as possible with whoever I could persuade to sit in the passenger seat for a couple of hours.
Took two lessons with an instructor (in a Metro) who confirmed I was ok to book my test.
On the day of the test my instructor (whose car I was using for the test itself) turned up in one of those new fangled Fiesta diesels! Having never driven a Fiesta (let alone a diesel!) before I was a bit flummoxed and during the test actually stalled a couple of times but passed ok as apparently I carried out the correct actions for a stall.

After my Mini I bought an Austin Maxi 1750 which in turn was replaced with a succession of Metros (my favourite car).

Hedgehogsaremything · 24/08/2025 14:44

A Volvo 360. No power steering. Heavy as a tank.
