I learned so long ago that I could have had a man walking in front with a red flag. No, seriously it was a Vauxhall Viva.

Ford Fiesta which felt very fancy compared to the old mini I shared with DB

unsync · 24/08/2025 16:25

Austin Maxi 1750. British Racing Green. Needed two hands on the gearstick to get into reverse. Brown vinyl seats that you stuck to in hot weather. No power steering or braking, massive steering wheel, it was like driving a tank.

Nissan Micra - instructor's car, passed in 1993.
Once i passed - mum's 1970's Vauxhall Chevette. Radio only. No rear seat belts. Manual windows. Went into reverse instead of first gear gear too easily!

Volvo estate. Big old rectangular one back in the 80s.
Like driving a wardrobe.

Ilovegermany · 24/08/2025 17:32

Metro as well with BSM

Katesdeadbehindtheeyes · 24/08/2025 17:37

A mk2 Ford Escort 1.3 GL with a hole in the floor. Great fun to drive with rear wheel drive. Wish I kept it be worth a fortune now.

Madisnttheword · 24/08/2025 17:38

A 7 seater people carrier. It was our car and I passed my test in it

Vodkamartini3olives · 24/08/2025 17:38

C reg Austin metro. It was my aunties. I bought it off her before I took my test. Almost flooded the engine a few times untill I got the hang of the choke. I loved that car.

Peugeot 206

blueclip · 24/08/2025 17:40

Corsa - instructor's
Fiesta - ours

Energysluro · 24/08/2025 17:40

DH car, which was a Vauxhall Astra I think, then it died and we continued the lessons in a Toyota Yaris and that’s the one I took the test in too.

Pinkywoo · 24/08/2025 17:41

Peugeot 106

😂

Mine was a Nissan Bluebird - instructor's car. Randomly we were behind one when I was driving my Dad home yesterday and he said: "I'm surprised a car that old is still on the road!" Thanks Dad! But yes... next year I will have been driving for 30 years...

Volvo 440 with no power steering (our family car at the time). It really was like driving a tank, though a pretty nippy one. It was, ironically, much cheaper to insure than the little cars my friends learnt in.

That was my family's car so I did some learning in it and was then allowed to use it when my Mum didn't need it. Had to lift up that little collar on the gearstick to put it in reverse?! Funnily enough I always referred to it as driving a tank too...

During one of my tests (learning to drive took a while) my examiner commented that he had the same car, but until he saw me manoeuvring, he hadn't realised some models didn't have power steering. The effort required for parallel parking definitely felt tank like.

Our current car (not a Volvo) also has a little collar that we lift to get into reverse; at least it means I can't do it by accident.

Vauxhall Viva (back in 1981).

ImogenBrocklehurst · 24/08/2025 21:54

Instructor’s car was a mini metro. When I passed my test I drove my mum’s fiesta, until my parents bought me a morris marina. Dodgy clutch, and the petrol gauge never worked, which added an element of peril to every journey.

Eyesopenwideawake · 24/08/2025 22:13

First lesson was in a Mini. Then – to huge excitement – it was the new and futuristic Mini Metro!! That was in 1981 and I passed first time.

Vauxhall Viva (back in 1981).

My first car was a Viva, cost me £200. My dad had gold stripes painted on the sides and rear as he thought a dark green car was 'dangerous'. It did 0-60 in about three weeks...

Defender90 · 24/08/2025 22:25

Instructors Ford Ka which another pupil crashed the week before my test. 1999.

InveterateWineDrinker · 25/08/2025 21:53

70 series Toyota Land Cruiser, in game-viewing configuration (multiple open-air benches mounted on the chassis behind the cab).

The first car I ever owned was a Citroën AX, which in comparison was like driving a fart through a tornado: terrifying.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 25/08/2025 21:57

Datsun Stanza in 1991

Lincslady53 · 16/10/2025 19:06

My Dad's Ford Anglia, my instructor had a Renault 16, with the gear change on the steering column. I am old, and this was in the 60s.
