Mum has pain and a lump

Hi everyone,

Just looking for a handhold really as my mum has given me devastating news tonight.

She's had pain in her breast for about two weeks now, she's gone to the doctor and while she can't feel a lump he's felt one and sent her on the two week wait pathway for a mammogram at the hospital.

I'm only in my 20s, I'm terrified and just want to cry. I can't lose my mum 💔 just looking for some reassurance or any positive stories really.

That's excellent news!

I'd also like to thank @TheFormidableMrsC and all the other posters who so generously shared their breast cancer stories.

Earlier in the year when I was going thru testing and anxiously waiting for results I'd read threads about bc diagnosis and took so much comfort from reading about people's positive experiences about completing treatment and getting on with their lives.

It turned out that I did not have cancer but your experiences helped me to avoid the panic and to feel like I would be OK even if I got the diagnosis I was so afraid of.

Many thanks ladies!

It's muscular

Hooray! Delighted to read this! Hope you're all able to celebrate tonight!

Now is a good time to maybe think about addressing your anxiety, it's so crippling (my daughter has it and is now medicated and it's transformed her life!). Look after yourself! 🎉🎉🎉

I think the best thing we can do in terms of paying forward is to try and take some of the fear away and offer hope. So glad you're clear! 💐

@TheFormidableMrsC it's definitely on the list to get sorted!!

In my defence, the actual picture of events is a bit different

3 ish weeks ago she got a very random earache (she's prone to ear infections) and felt very under the weather for a day, and she was going to go to the doctor the next day but woke up feeling better. She then started to feel the pain which is in her armpit, the side of her chest and behind her boob (if that makes sense). She does have a lump in her armpit.

The consultant did say she has lumpy breasts, but he could feel straight away that the lump in her armpit is from an infection, he felt her glands and they're up a little too. He thinks she's just fighting the pleurisy and that can take 12 months, but that he can see why the GP would be concerned.

When it's said like this it definitely seems less worrying than the "ive got boob pain and a lump in my armpit and the doctor said it's cancer" - hindsight is a wonderful thing!

That's absolutely brilliant news @LookingForAHandHold! So pleased for you and your mum.

I feel like this is a really harsh comment when you don't know a lot about my family circumstances- I do all of that already. I'm always checking if we need anything, do all the family laundry and dishes every night, cook meals twice a week and will often meal prep for the whole family of a weekend, when I'm not working I will drive my family to and from appointments etc

It was not meant to be harsh. I’m a mum and I was just commenting on how it feels to face a cancer diagnosis when you are a mum. The hardest part is telling your children and you are far more worried about them than yourself. Every instinct is to protect them.
The guilt you feel is immense.

I lost my mum to cancer when I was 30 and I get it, the panic, the thought of her not being around is overwhelming. Life has been tough at times, but you learn to live on.

I’m so glad that your mum is ok. Look after her, tell her you love her, hug her. It’s the best news just before Christmas. You can now relax and enjoy yourself.

Aw that’s absolutely fantastic news🥰🥰 Now you really can have an amazing Christmas xx

riverislandjeans · 12/12/2024 19:46

Amazing news for you all!

Now go and have a lovely Christmas!!

You don't need to defend yourself but I reckon you'd feel a whole lot better if you addressed your anxiety. I understand where you're coming from. I had a load of weird symptoms before I was diagnosed and I thought I had a stomach ulcer or something. Will never know it was connected but I do get how things can spiral. Anyway, you don't have to worry any more. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas! 🎄

outofstate · 12/12/2024 22:16

I had breast cancer and pain with it.

DianaRiggsCatsuit · 13/12/2024 15:18

@outofstate
What good news. I hope your mum gets rid of the pleurisy quickly.
Now you can all relax and enjoy Christmas and the NY.

@LookingForAHandHold im currently in the same situation e.g in my 20s mother is 49 and has found a painful lump in her breat no other symptoms.

Can I ask if you dont mind the outcome from your mums testing? How is your mum now?

OP if its any help/reassurance I've had breast cancer twice (different breasts, so not related) I never experienced any pain at all.

And if your Mum, and I hope not, does have breast cancer, it isn't a death sentence at all.

OP’s mum didn’t have cancer. If you read all her posts by pressing the little triangle at the top then you can see what happened. Wishing your mum well.

This is a very old thread and the OP’s mum didn’t have cancer. I hope you remain well!
