Likely breast cancer after ultrasound

spartanrunnergirl · 02/10/2024 20:29

Hi all after routine mammogram I was referred for an ultrasound, which I had today and the radiologist said it's likely a cancer, thus did a few core biopsies. I did not know that cancer could be detected at ultrasound stage but she was pretty certain it was cancer and said the biopsies were to see what they were dealing with. Has anyone else had this? Thank you

@chococakey hope all went well today xx

quietmaelstrom · 03/03/2025 20:11

Yes, just checking in to see if you've had a better time today @chococakey. Hope things went smoothly.

Morning all. My chemo did go ahead yesterday.

So number 1 (EC) is done. It was a long day. Short staffed meant I didn't get started till nearly 2pm (despite being there just after 9!).
Huge issues getting a cannula in. Many attempts and 4 members of staff! My arm covered in bruises.
100% need a picc line which is supposed to be being done next week before my next cycle.

I used the cold cap which wasn't as bad as I thought. The nurse said because my hair is very thick maybe that's why it didn't feel so cold....I'm hoping that's why and not because it wasn't working very well. It was very cold like a brain freeze for about 5-10 mins then I seemed to get used to it.
Finally got home about 6.45. Was very tired after a long day.
I've been sent home with anti-sickness tablets, steroids and filgasim injections.

Didn't sleep well, felt like I had acid reflux all night which is something I've never suffered with (even when pregnant) and this morning I'm feeling a bit nauseaus but I've got tablets to take this morning so hopefully it'll go off. Also feeling tired. So for me this is a duvet day! My DH is taking our son to school and then working from home. I'm planning on just taking it easy.

Thanks for all the well wishes and tips so far.

chococakey · 04/03/2025 08:13

Also - when should I wash my hair? Feels greasy from the conditioner they put in but I forgot to ask. When did you ladies who've used the cap first wash your hair? I know only once a week is best. Thank you!

Glad you got started and hopefully the picc will help for treatment going forward. If you can manage to get out for a walk afterwards, that really helped me keep side effects at bay. It's not for everyone!

I was told to leave hair at least 48 hours after treatment. I learned to do a messy topknot. It was lockdown though so I didn't have to see anybody. Your hair sounds like mine and I was the same, uncomfortable for five mins or so and then it was fine. Fingers crossed it works for you! Have a restful day Flowers

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 04/03/2025 08:30

Glad it went well @chococakey Keep on top of the nausea tablets and drink plenty of water to wash things through. Get some walks in if you can.

I wash my hair the day after cold capping to get rid of the conditioner. Use lukewarm water and try not to rub shampoo etc in circular motions. I was told to gently “comb” the products through front to back. I usually do two shampoos using simple shampoo and conditioner. I was told not to use heat, so no blow dry or heated tools. I switched to a wide toothed comb rather than a brush too, but I have straight hair which was cut short. Keep on top of combing as shed hairs will matt and may need cutting out. Hopefully you won’t start to shed for a bit. Apparently the “big shed” starts on day 21 and then eases (according to the ladies on the Facebook Paxman group).

Initially, I washed weekly but it felt horrible as my hair gets greasy after a couple of days. I started to get a painful scalp (eucerin scalp balm helped). One of the nurses said to wash it twice weekly so I switched to that which eased the scalp issues.

There’s a helpful paxman group on Facebook as well as info on the Paxman website. Hope you’re doing ok today.

Thanks ladies.
It's nice that finally some sunshine is in the sky and spring is on the way. It helps to lift your mood for sure. Even just it coming in through the window.
If I feel a bit brighter later I might walk to pick up my son from school (15 min walk away) but I'll see how I go. Want to try and keep moving where I can but also appreciate there will be bad days too. I'm not good at sitting around! But this morning I am enjoying a long sit/lay in bed and hopefully I will perk up a bit this afternoon.

How's everyone else getting on today? x

SunnyValemin · 04/03/2025 09:53

@chococakey so pleased you've ticked number 1 off, although it sounds a bit of a nightmare at your hospital. Lots of rest today, that walk will probably do some good but you can always do it tomorrow (or the next day) if you can't face it today. I tried to get out for 10 mins each day (even if it took 10 mins to get to the end of the street and back), the sun on your face does you good. But don't forget the suncream!

I'm taking my baby niece out for pancakes today ❤️ feel I'm finally truly moving forward now, the sunshine and blue skies help xx

Aw that sounds lovely going out for pancakes. And you're right that the sunshine really helps with your mood. Nice step in moving forward for you after a long year x

I completely forgot all about pancake day until my son mentioned it this morning! They must have talked about it at school yesterday.
Maybe he'll forget by the time he gets home haha (wishful thinking)

quietmaelstrom · 04/03/2025 10:31

Glad you have one under your belt - now you know what to expect for the rest 😊

quietmaelstrom · 04/03/2025 17:47

Hope you recovered enough to have a good time with your friends @Fillybuster

My radiotherapy planning appointment is tomorrow - looking forward to getting what feels like the 'final' stage of treatment started.

Let us know how you get on. Quite a few more months for me before I get to radiotherapy but I think I'd feel similar in that it's the final hospital treatments to get through.
Keep us posted x

Yes, it's taken away a lot the unknown. I didn't realise the E part of EC is pushed in by syringe by a nurse rather than a drip. Because of my dodgy cannula and tiny veins it took over an hour to push all that in!

Today I've felt a bit nauseous and also a bit groggy. Like I've been pumped full of drugs - which I have of course! I've rested most of the day. Did managed to hang a few bits of washing on the line in the sun so was nice to feel a bit of fresh air.

Fillybuster · 04/03/2025 19:40

Aaaargh!!!! I wrote a really long update on the train up to Manchester on Friday and have only just realised that it got lost in the Avanti West coast ether and never made it onto Mumsnet…..gah! So massive apologies to everyone - I wasn’t ghosting you!

It was definitely a relief to get through the last session. @quietmaelstrom @Yamyamabroad @BatshitCrazyWoman I had 5 long sessions instead of 15 short ones - it’s the same total amount of exposure but you get it over and done with a bit faster, although it also means the side effects kick in a bit sooner - but apart from that, @spartanrunnergirl has described it all really well. Like her, I didn’t have a tattoo because they used the ct machine & lasers for positioning, and I had to do a lot of deep breath holds, for treatment on my left hand side. The team were super supportive and lovely, and let me choose my own Spotify playlists too!

In terms of side effects….its really not been much fun so far. Like Spartan, I’ve got the full on mastitis/swollen breasts/sunburnt nipple thing going on, for which I was recommended Strata FX cream, which I think is helping, as well as aloe Vera. I was told not to use ice packs (or direct heat….perish the thought - I’m burning up!!) but I have to admit that I have, and they really help, although I’m careful to wrap them up to protect the skin as much as possible.

I did make it to Manchester for the weekend and had a lovely few days hanging out with old friends, even though I spent quite a lot of it either curled up on the sofa with the cats or fast asleep - I don’t think I was the best company, but it was great to see everyone. Glad I did it, as I’ve been feeling quite a but worse since I got back, with waves of nausea & exhaustion which keep catching me by surprise. Hopefully that will all start to pass fairly soon!

Hope the planning appointment goes well tomorrow @quietmaelstrom. I went with DH and we both found it really helpful to talk through everything in advance of the treatment: I was definitely more reassured after that, hope it’s the same for you. And apologies if my description of side effects is at all off putting - I know it’s different for everyone.

@dancingwhilstfacingthemusic im so glad you managed to get away too, and it was lovely to hear how you were met with kindness and support on your travels. I love the thought of you lighting a candle for warrior women: maybe that should be the title of our next thread?! Meanwhile, cheese and cake sounds like the perfect way to make the most of your time in France! When are you back?

@chococakey I was thinking of you yesterday. Thank goodness you’ve now made a start on treatment, although goodness, that sounds like it was a difficult and long day. Your poor, hedgehogged-pincushion arms!!! At least you know for sure now that you want to get the picc line sorted. Hope you get some sleep tonight and aren’t feeling too awful after the first treatment?

@SunnyValemin please get that shoulder seen to before it seizes up completely! I appreciate that it might not feel as urgent now you know there’s nothing sinister going on, but shoulders are funny things and can be really hard to get moving again once they lock up.

How’s everyone else doing?

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 04/03/2025 20:08

@SunnyValemin that sounds a lovely trip out. I hope all are duly pancaked up!

@chococakey hope you’re doing ok tonight. The first one can be a bit of a “surprise”. Have you some sherbert lemons in? - you may experience a “slimy mouth” feeling and these help. Glad you’re getting a Picc, they can be a good friend!

Good luck tomorrow with the planning @quietmaelstrom, it’s very strange to be working through the final stages of treatment. Nearly there.

@Fillybuster glad you got away but it sounds like the side effects are being spicy buggers.

I got back yesterday and have had bloods today, ready for My Last Chemo tomorrow (all being well). Last EC, number 16. Hair is still holding in there although madly thinning. I’m told I’m to expect this for another 12 weeks or so. I have noticed some gently burgeoning chin hairs which may be the chemo equivalent of the rainbow in Noah’s Ark.

Good luck for the last chemo tomorrow!

I have got some lemon sweets just in case. I've had a bit of a weird metallic taste in my mouth today so have been sipping lemonade which has helped a bit x

All the best for the very last one @dancingwhilstfacingthemusic

So glad you managed to have a good weekend @Fillybuster, even if it was tailored to requirements a bit! Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the info - all is useful, even side effects! I do know from the oncologist that I will have to have tattoos as she said the machines weren't new enough not to need them.

My local NHS area has a website with information videos about radiotherapy for patients which I watched months ago so I'm going to have a quick look at again before I go to sleep.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 05/03/2025 07:44

I'm glad those that have been away have had good times, and my commiserations to everyone battling side effects.

@Fillybuster I talked through the 5 sessions versus 15 sessions with the radiotherapy doctor, and I decided on 15 because of various other factors which may increase side effects, and I'm happy with my decision.

Some disgusting virus has got hold of me, so I'm very firmly on the sofa under a blanket until I feel better.

Fillybuster · 05/03/2025 10:06

Hope today goes well @dancingwhilstfacingthemusic - nearly there now!

@BatshitCrazyWoman ugghhhhh!!! Sending sympathy & healing hugs. Not what any of us need whilst we’re dealing with all of this, right? Stay put, stay warm and feel better soon 💐

Yamyamabroad · 05/03/2025 10:28

@Fillybuster , those side effects sound awful. I have my 3 little tattoos and will be starting my 5 sessions on Monday. I'm having the week off work to do it but I've warned them I may need more time off after if I get bad side effects. My favourite phrase at the moment seems to be "Needs Must" 🙄

I had just 5 sessions of RT and it was absolutely fine and didn't suffer any side effects at all. So fingers crossed it's the same for you.

Oddly though, I did get some soreness and sharp twinges in my breast but about a year later.
