Your best tips please for a new camper with a (little) budget to get us ready for our first trip! We have the main stuff (er....tent and beds!) what would you never be without?

Oh, and I think I probably fit into the 'glamper' category although I am prepared to forego the fairylights after some stern advice from Slubber.....

so....help please!

Flipflops/rubber clogs in the tent porch ready for instant use (don't bother with socks - skin dries faster).
Clothes airer in the tent for wet coats and towels.
Small lidded bucket to avoid nighttime treks to the loo block.
Double airbed with campermars underneath for insulation.
Credit card. For escape when it all gets just too ghastly.

Am liking wine and the gadgetyness of delta pegs. I like to feel prepared even if I'm going to be rubbish at the merest suggestion of a breeze

what about cooking and washing stuff? Big squashy waterbottle? Someone said we needed one of those? Mallet? Bandages? Really am a beginner.....!!

silk sleeping bag liner - gloriously toasty and the size of a bag of flour when packed.
corkscrew

gherkinwithapurplemerkin · 28/04/2010 17:11

And I am a trekker to the loo block in the night. Yuk at buket of piss in the tent

Numberfour · 28/04/2010 19:42

wine

PrettyCandles · 28/04/2010 20:22

Bucket is in porch, not in tent. It has a tight-fitting lid and is used for wee only and is washed out and Dettoxed first thing in the morning. You trek over to the loo block at 3am if you want to - I don't.

A water carrier is very useful.

A couple of washing up bowls also very useful and multipupose.

PrettyCandles · 28/04/2010 20:24

Wooden mallet - hard ones bend pegs.

hazeyjane · 28/04/2010 20:25

stovetop coffee maker

crocs for showers

EggyAllenPoe · 28/04/2010 20:25

Motorcaravan.

bit of a catch-all.

honeydragon · 28/04/2010 20:26

dongle - we camp a lot for work, we sometimes crack out the google and convince take aways to deliver to fields in the middle of nowhere - surprisingly good fun all round we find!

Themasterandmargaritas · 28/04/2010 20:27

Headtorch

EggyAllenPoe · 28/04/2010 20:27

also 'son of hibachi' barbeque (i think currently known as Grilleto) that doubles as late-night outdoors heating.

and folding chairs. dog crate. playpen.

Warm clothes, lantern, citronella candles.
I'm hoping for an electric cool box this summer.

A chair with a drinks holder in the arm rest and plastic wine glasses. All the rest is mere titivation

kitbit · 29/04/2010 23:08

Well......i have 2 chairs and I have joyfully discovered that they have a thing for drinks so I have awarded myself Points.

Also have an old foldup table which will be the right size for balancing the cooker on since my back is not what it was for cooking kneeling down. Oh dear - if I'm a bit creaky maybe I should just go and look up B&B's....!

Have lighter, washing up bowl and utensils, and a bag that fits a bog roll some toilet wipes and toothbrushes. I'm kinda skirting round the edges but hey, little by little!

Sleeping bag liners....ooooh....
