Glamping - not what I expected...

I booked a glamping experience via air b&b - it isn't what I expected, but I don't know if I am being precious.

We are in a pre- erected bell tent with inflatable beds, which is very sweet.

It's the lack of amenities that has surprised me. There is a long drop toilet and a communal open shower (photo attached) which are basic. The shower is tepid at best, overlooked by the farmhouse and the sheep keep popping in!

But no stand pipe or tap to get water? No where to wash up

It's £90 a night. Would you be fed up?

Yes but i would have also looked closely at facilities before booking

Almostthere15 · 03/08/2018 08:57

Ouch. I wouldn't call that glamping. Though the tent may be lovely I think I'd expect facilities at least on par with a decent caravan/camping club site - proper showers and toilets. What did the ad/description say about the facilities.

As an aside, and I know it doesn't help right now, we've found ready camp a good alternative when we don't want to drag too much kit around. It would be unusual to pay quite as much too. You could get a hotel for 90!

Kingkiller · 03/08/2018 08:57

I would be unimpressed tbh. Doesn't sound very glam! We camp (not glamp) with our own tent at fairly modest sites but all have proper hot showers and proper toilets.

HopeAndJoy16 · 03/08/2018 08:58

Yanbu! Massively overpriced for the facilities! Did the website you booked through describe the (lack of) facilities? What did the reviews say? If there weren't any i would definitely be leaving my own to make others aware. And if there's any way of giving feedback to the owners i would do so. I've paid a fraction of that at a bog standard campsite with much nicer toilets/showers!

Oblomov18 · 03/08/2018 09:12

That's not glamping to me!

livefornaps · 03/08/2018 09:14

Premier inn are better value than that, mate

converseandjeans · 03/08/2018 09:16

Definitely not glamping. Sounds like a rip off.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/08/2018 09:16

We regularly camp at a site that has 5* facilities and even in high season is a third of the price. What did the description and the reviews say? I would talk to the owners about the shower being tepid and your disappointment. If they can’t resolve it or offer a partial refund then I’d leave an honest review.

missmapp · 03/08/2018 09:19

As others ,have said, I have camped in sites nowhere near ' glamping ' standards but all have good facilities, hot showers, sinks and easy access to hot water at all times. Last weekend we paid £25 for a night on a site with facilities better than some hotels.
YANBU

Shockers · 03/08/2018 09:19

So where will you wash up?

Is it a new venture? Are you their first customer?

It’s not glamping- an air bed isn’t luxurious camping!

PsychoPumpkin · 03/08/2018 09:20

I agree with ilivefornaps about Premier Inn being better value. For less than you’re paying to shower with sheep, you’d have a big squashy bed and a hot shower.

It must be really disappointing for you.

Shockers · 03/08/2018 09:21

Long drop toilets are quite common at eco camp sites though.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 03/08/2018 09:21
Shock

That’s not glancing! Someone’s just shoved a windbreaker up in their field and charged you £90 to stand in it while it rains. Grin

We glamped a few years ago. €55/night for a proper purpose built glamping hut on a campsite that sleeps 4, had electric sockets, kettle and mini fridge and a proper campsite shower block, toilets and laundry room.

Verbena87 · 03/08/2018 09:24

not sure the toilet/shower situation would bother me too much, but the lack of water is seriously not ok. What are you meant to drink?

MrsJayy · 03/08/2018 09:26

People can chqrge a total fortune for a fancy tent and people pay it you are on a campste tepid water is the norm in busy times you have paid to go rustic

PinkHeart5914 · 03/08/2018 09:26

I’m sorry but your post has given me a giggle lovely.

No I wouldn’t be happy with that! That shower just no, it hasn’t got a roof I don’t want on lookers while I wash thanks

cholka · 03/08/2018 09:27

Nah, I'd complain. They've done the bare minimum thinking rich idiots will pay loads for it.
Glamping is wonderful if done right (if the hosts put a bit of love and care into it) but an insult if done wrong - some hosts basically view their guests with contempt and try to rip them off.
All the ones I've been to with Canopy and Stars have been excellent. You have to really scrutinise before booking, check reviews and pictures and the details of what you're getting.
In my experience Airbnb hosts offering glamping are more of the contemptuous rip-off variety.

livefornaps · 03/08/2018 09:27

@psychopumpkin - wooooooord!

Notquiteagandt · 03/08/2018 09:29

Ive been to better big standard camp sites then that to be honnest. The only thing thats differant is the bell tent. So I guess you are paying for the hire of that.

Notquiteagandt · 03/08/2018 09:29

*bog standard

Hoppinggreen · 03/08/2018 09:30

When we go glamping there is a toilet in the “tent” alongside a shower or shower cabin outside the door an soften a wood fired hot tub
That just over priced camping

MargoLovebutter · 03/08/2018 09:32

My idea of hell, but what's important is how it was described to you when you paid for it. Did you see photos of the showers and toilets as well as the tent you would stay in? How were they described? If the description and reality don't match then you have a case to complain, otherwise it is just a learning experience!

VioletCharlotte · 03/08/2018 09:33

Yep I've been to one like that. Def more 'camp' than 'glamp'!

I've been clamping twice, first one was brilliant. A real home from home. 2 bedrooms, inside shower and toilet, electric fridge, lights, etc. The second was similar to the one you're at.

There seems to be a fair few farmers jumping on the glamping bus. I'll def look much more closely at the detail before I book again which I vowed not to do after the second experience!

Bluntness100 · 03/08/2018 09:35

Agree, did you not look at the facilities before you booked? Were the details not available and you were somehow misled?

PugwallsSummer · 03/08/2018 09:37

Total rip off, and definitely not glamping!

More like some kind of eco-retreat or something...
