Glamping - not what I expected...

I booked a glamping experience via air b&b - it isn't what I expected, but I don't know if I am being precious.

We are in a pre- erected bell tent with inflatable beds, which is very sweet.

It's the lack of amenities that has surprised me. There is a long drop toilet and a communal open shower (photo attached) which are basic. The shower is tepid at best, overlooked by the farmhouse and the sheep keep popping in!

But no stand pipe or tap to get water? No where to wash up

It's £90 a night. Would you be fed up?

That shower is awful! No way would I shower naked there! And there's no facilities for washing up? Maybe you're meant to do it while your showering?

I like camping but only with nice decent showers and toilets.

queenrollo · 03/08/2018 12:00

On the listing I saw it mentioned being able to collect your own eggs from hens. You also mention sheep. Are there handwashing facilities and appropriate signage about the risks of illness from handling animals?
We've often stayed on working farms they have adhered very strictly to this.

HoleyCoMoley · 03/08/2018 12:01

It's laughable, her website says there is a bath, no other facilities. Is there any electricity. I would not pay 9 pounds a night, that shower needs reporting to health and safety.

SpaceDinosaur · 03/08/2018 12:11

Nope. That's not glamping. At all.

Glamping is pretty little bell tent with a proper bed, little wood burner, lots of space and a welcome basket, proper toilet block with hot showers, access to a fridge and a freezer with frozen hot water bottles you can borrow to keep your food cold in the provided cold chest.

That's a piss take.

Tell the owners that you are extremely unhappy with the facilities compared to their advertising. Demand a refund and leave.

That shower's a health hazard.

MiracleAccidentMistake · 03/08/2018 12:22

just to answer a couple of questions - the gas heats the water, the shower unit is gas powered so I don't think it's dangerous as such.

  • no there isn't signage about health hazards in relation to animals and washing hands. The pigs are behind an electric fence but the sheep are roaming and came and had a good stare while I was showering Grin

Looking at the actual listing now, OP, and there are no amenities at all now (crossed out), but it does have the bath icon Confused

I would want at least some money back - the "luxury" tents look nice, but the other facilities are a joke. - I can see why they only have 2 pics up!

I use Air BnB a lot, and always choose someone with lots of pictures and info, and good reviews.
Sympathy for you, - I hope you are enjoying yourselves anyway, at least it's in a nice spot!

I'm always fascinated at glamping anyway, but that's awful!

MiracleAccidentMistake · 03/08/2018 12:42

Also - in terms of what to do about it - I think once I'm back in civilisation I'll start by messaging them and saying while it has potential to be lovely they need to market it more as wild eco camping

You can't wait until you get home. It's not okay to do that. I would say that you booked 'luxury glamping' and are shocked by the primitive facilities. I would suggest that you would only be willing to pay £30 per night (£40 if there are 4 of you?) and need a part refund. If Georgina gets nasty I would tell her you will seek a full refund through small claims court and do it. Take photos of everything and add them to all reviews.

MiracleAccidentMistake · 03/08/2018 12:57

It is a very pretty location and the pub down the road is nice - thank goodness.

Running out of battery now on phone. Obviously no where to charge it Grin

Kitty - sorry didn't see your post.

Really don't want to have a confrontation - my kids think it's all lovely and I don't want them to witness an argument

can someone post a link to the owner's website?

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 03/08/2018 13:16

You‘ll have a hard time getting the money back once it’s left your hands. And you‘ll be asked: why didn’t you say anything at the time?

millimat · 03/08/2018 13:23

Why don't you start by asking to charge your phone in the communal kitchen that's listed?

MiracleAccidentMistake · 03/08/2018 13:27

With Air B&B you pay upfront - so the money has already gone.

LOL at asking to charge phone in communal kitchen

You will get money back. I was very unhappy with accommodation booked via Airbnb and I left early after telling the owner why. The owner said he'd refund me the nights I didn't stay. He didn't so I emailed Airbnb and they sorted it out very quickly!

loveka · 03/08/2018 13:41

Round my way glamping/shepherds huts are more expensive than a one bedroom cottage. People pay to get away from modern life apparently.

Next summer we will have a one bedroom cottage with huge deck, Smeg fridge, range cooker, wet room etc and a shepherds hut with composting toilet. The shepherds hut will be £90 a night and the cottage £80 in August! Those are the market rates.

It depends on where you are too. Comparing, say The Lake District to rural Wales is pointless. The market is totally different.

Mentounasc · 03/08/2018 13:43

The Airbnb listing has been significantly changed from the one you posted to make it sound more like what it is - verybasic Camping Ina Bell tent. The fact that you have the old screenshot gives you good grounds for a massive reduction. Presumably all those July cancellations were because even the crappy al fresco shower wasn't built then. As a PP says, this is wild eco camping at best.

This is an example of what glamping is all about:
Westport Glamping

WhatchaMaCalllit · 03/08/2018 13:51

Email them or phone them to say that you're not happy with the difference in what you were sold (and the price you're paying for it) versus what is now up on their site. They have mis-sold you a holiday and if you're their first visitors, it's very likely you'll be their last too as you will be posting a stinker of a review online (unless they refund you significantly).

28holid · 03/08/2018 13:53

Can you repost the picture with the volume covering it so we can read it?

Kingkiller · 03/08/2018 13:56

That's not what I think of as glamping at all, Watcha - it's not camping! I'd be expecting massive bell tents with beds, luxurious rugs, pretty lights etc.

Floralnomad · 03/08/2018 14:01

You do need to tell them now , whilst you are there , that you are not happy and that it is not as advertised , you cannot just keep using the limited facilities and then moan later when you have the oppurtunity to do so now .

WhatchaMaCalllit · 03/08/2018 14:15

Something more like this then Kingkiller?

Gwenhwyfar · 03/08/2018 14:20

Communal shower??? Did you really mean that??
I also wouldn't be happy with an open shower unless in a very hot country. You will be freezing using it morning and night.
