Aith you will love UK campsite, they are nice people ther.

When yo are thinkingabout getting a new tent ( btw) You have to aks yourseld a few questions.

Are you going to use it for your main holiday (a week or so) or are you going to use if mostly for weekends? If the former than I think it is a good dea to get a bigger tent, that will alow you to camp insome comfort....get one that slepps at least two people nore than you intend to take! Those berths are optimistic.

If using it in the UK I personally wouldn't go under a HH of 3000, but others in the know say 2000.

The modern tents tend to be easy to pitch. In my book the easiers are the 'flysheet first' or 'as one' tents. Some of the nice geodesig dome types (which have excellent living space btw) take longer, since you put the inner up first and then have to put the flysheet over the top and then peg and guy that our as well. But this is a personal prefernce.

Do you want to stand up in it.....this was a biggie for us, and I don't like to get dressed on all fours!

We got an outwell colorado (now sold as an Indiana)

AitchTwoOh · 02/04/2007 10:56

oooh, thanks martianb, that's helpful. tbh dh and i both work from home for ourselves which is great for childcare but crap for holidays as we are 'always on', iykwim? mummy by day and worker bee by night. so we just aren't very good at taking holidays, and in fact i don't think we've been away since our honeymoon...

now, the thing is that i couldn't possibly complain, as we have the kind of life where we can say 'my time is free this afternoon, let's all go out to a museum' but it does mean that we simply never organise for two weeks away.

so i think that we would be looking for something that we can use for days here and there, but we would prefer it to be as comfy as possible as it will represent our only holiday...

i'm off to have a wee look now. the weather is glorious here today, it's inspiring...

The tent we have can be pitched in 30 minutes. We have used it for long weekends (3 nights), less than that would be too much faff for us.

two other tips. try a childay in a pre pitched tent first....this way you can see if you love it or hate it without the expense and hassle of getting the stuff. There are lots of places in the UK and even more on the continent that do this sort of thing.

Once you have given it a go, have a look at tents that are put up! It is much more helpful looking at the usable space for real. Yeomans do this sort of thing in the East Midlands.

Once the tent is up you can see if the distribution of space suits your family needs, and if they are tall enough for your comfort.

If you decide that camping is for you, buy a recognised make of tent. there are loads of them on the market, ask on here or UKcampsite and you will get lots of advice and pointers. only buy a tent from e-bay if it is one of these recognised brand names. A lot of crap gets sold on e-bay, many of them are not waterproof enough for norther european use. American brands can be bad in this respect.

For us it was a great choice. the kids love camping, it is always an adventure for them, and they get a lot of freedom, while I get to sit, sip wine and read my book!

Troutpout · 02/04/2007 13:30

OOOH

That's lovely giraffski
Would love a footprint carpet for our monty...but can't stretch to it this year
so it's picnic rugs again for us.
I need one of those griddles though...you know...one of those things that go over both rings on your stove...so that you can do big cooked breakfasts. Has anyone got one...or seen them anywhere?

Blandmum · 02/04/2007 13:38

Trout, you have a Monty. some of us are ous enough as it is!!!!!!

I aspire to Montydom

Lucycat · 02/04/2007 13:41

I like it giraffeski!!

and I'm incredibly fussy when it comes to tents
We (dh and I) looked at the Georgia XL in Go Outdoors on Saturday and I did like the sky lights and I'm very envious of the Outwell doormat, I shall have to stick to my Tesco value doormat until they sell the Outwell ones separately!

Please don't get the carpet..... I mean carpets and camping noooooooo, you have a sig too so it'll be cosy enough!

Lucycat · 02/04/2007 13:43

martianbishop, we looked at a Monty again and it wouldn't suit us in terms of sleeping areas, I am coming round to the Indiana 8 as I like the front zip off canopy.....they have a new one on ebay for £348 - but i quite fancy a Vermont with a built in wardrobe!

hennipenni · 02/04/2007 13:54

LUcycat, they do sell the mats seperatly, at yoemans(sp)I spotted one for £3.99. Was gonna get it but then persuaded DH that we just had to have the canopy which included a doormat

Blandmum · 02/04/2007 14:00

TBH the only monty that would suit us is the 12.. And that is a bit too big.

I like a vis a vis set up, two kids on one side, grown ups on the other.

The 12 is too big if I'm being sensible.

The indiana it nice, but the one room is v small and I can se my kids arguing of when one gets the smallest room. And then one would have to sleep next to me! But I loke the canopy thing.

I want a sleeps 8 Monty! Is that too much to ask for?????

Lucycat · 02/04/2007 14:03

omg hennipenni - seriously? an outwell doormat! I'm off into town!

I know mb, we thought that about the Monty - they do need an inbetween size - the perfect tent does not exist - yet!

MrsDoolittle · 02/04/2007 14:31

Oooh I want a carpet now.

We have a Vango Colorado 600DLX.

Lucycat · 02/04/2007 14:33

NOOOOOOOO.....no carpets in tents!

tis 'gainst the law of campingdom.

mmm might have to start a campaign.

MrsDoolittle · 02/04/2007 14:35

Okay - can I have a doormat??
The noisy groundsheet does annoy me so

Blandmum · 02/04/2007 14:39

LOL

Breast vs bottle

SAHM vs WOTH mothers

spooners vs blw

Now matters vs non matters

Rise up, oh campers, you have nothing to lose but the muddy footprints on your ground sheet!!!!

love camping, gonna miss it this year

never mind, Tin tent on Thursday

Lucycat · 02/04/2007 14:43

oh yes MrsD you can have a mat!

we shall raise a glass to the mb's when sitting outside our Colorado.

Enjoy your tin tent - we're going to Scotland and N Ireland later this week and staying in a house - ok so it's our friends and then BIL's houses but it'll still be weird not being under polyester!

puddle · 02/04/2007 14:44

I have a monty. And a doormat.

Does that mean I am finally in a clique?

Lucycat · 02/04/2007 14:47

well I have neither, does that mean I'm not?
