pop up gazebo

Hi. Has anyoned used the above camping? I borrowed a friend's this weekend when camping in heavy rain, it was a pop up, fabric type gazebo. It went up easily but in heavy rain it let through a very fine mist which over an extended period made things and people wet underneath.

Been looking at Airwave fully waterproof one online. Anyone used one or similar?

I've just been reading some reviews about the Airwave and it doesn't look like it would be any good in the wind.

A friend had this when I last went camping and it seemed to do the job well. I didn't see it go up or down though, and she did say the side panels had to be purchased separately.

Just marking my place! I need a gazebo but I want one that I can drive our people carrier under and they are all coming out a bit too low.

Normal gazebos don't really work for camping and can be positively dangerous in the wind. Coleman event shelters are better for the job as designed for camping but even.They aren't totally waterproof. Decathlon now do similar shelters which might be worth checking out as an alternative.

I've had a look at Decathon, there is a fab shelter but is fairly pricey, and to be honest if the weather is that bad we have a large living area in our tent, plus a porch.
I've read some really mixed reviews about the event shelters, so not sure if I am ready to invest in one of those.
One other option I am considering is a tarp shelter - cheap, flexible, easy to put up and not bulky in the car. we want something to bbq under in the rain, so obviously couldn't do that in the porch.

We love our tarp. It's so versatile, although I would recommend getting two additional poles so that you have four in total. You could also have a cheap windbreak at the side?

Thanks Wine. Is yours a proper tarp shelter, or just a square tarp with poles and guy ropes? I was looking at 2 on decathlon but both out of stock. We use windbreakers anyway so always take plenty.

We have the decathlon tarps and they are great. You do definitely need more poles though. We got a telescopic one from Cotswold outdoor and can now put that in the centre front hole to give the tarp an apex for water run off. Works a treat.

Obelink also do some nice ones I think, including canvas ones.

We used a cheap (£80) pop up gazebo a couple of weeks ago camping. It withstood some serious wind and got rained on, not torrential rain!, didn't seem to get wet inside but as I say only had a heavyish shower. It does have a couple of poles to help brace against the wind. Having lost an event shelter in the wind I'm not convinced about them.

We've just bought the Decathlon, one with sides, not used it for camping yet but we put it up in the garden.

It seems to be good quality and it comes with 4 sides (unlike the Coleman ones, you have to buy the sides).

Apart from providing some shelter from the rain the sides are useful for creating shade which is the main reason we bought it as our tents is very hot in the sun (not that we are going to get a lot of sun since I bought something for the sun grrr).

Thanks for all the replies. I have now ordered a tarp shelter. It comes with 2 poles and we have 2 1900mm poles already so will take those although I might upgrade to some even higher poles, I've seen some on Go Outdors website that extend to 2130mm. Can't wait to try it out in the garden now!

This thread is years old so hopefully my post can be looked upon for future reference by other people with the same problem(s).
Firstly, the Airwave Gazebo range are products that have been adapted to be affordable to the masses. What they have done (IMO) is remove the very expensive parts and replace them with decent quality alternatives.
However, the different normally between the expensive parts and the alternatives are the strength. Therefore, generally speaking, an Airwave gazebo would keep you dry but with rain often comes a little extra wind and this could be a problem.
A lot depends on where you gazebo is pitched too. Always ensure that it is (If possible) pointing in the direction of the wind but diagonally to it, allowing the wind to pass either side of the point of the gazebo which is also supported by the guy ropes and wind bars.

Should you experience even stronger winds it is eventually sensible to vacate your gazebo as extreme weather conditions can easily tear a gazebo to bits.
NO MATTER WHAT THE MANUFACTURERS CLAIM.

We have used several over the years which have all failed. Recently we bought a new one to go over our hot tub, an easy gazebo which is just so much better quality. Highly recommended. www.easygazebos.com

Hope this also help if you are looking for an affordable pop-up gazebo you can always try the Airware or All Season but as mention above their wind resistance is low. The Coleman Event Shelter is your best the deluxe in particular.
