Kids with glasses - how to nip the teasing in the bud?

Any tips to nip in the bud the possible teasing related to wearing glasses (DD Year 4)? The frames are only a few days old and DD loves them. There are occasional playground idiots who made ugly comments though.

@Vodkamartini3olives @Happytorepeatmyself they were in tears before parents got involved (DD from teasing, the other kid from dd standing up for herself), we've known the neighbourhood kid and parents for years, so not random. Just made me think if anyone tries to pull this off again with her, she should be equipped.

@LaliqueSaltGrinder @TangfasticAddict @CaptainMyCaptain @ladygindiva that's encouraging
I've not had glasses as a kid,so it's a new territory

So what did DD when she “stood up for herself”?

It’s not “new territory”
your kid has glasses
there is very limited and boring piss taking opportunity
You are fanning the flames I suspect.

Just say that they’ll get bored and to shrug it off or say the great comment upthread about the downside being able to see them more clearly

@Happytorepeatmyself some mental self defence taught in her martial arts

Specky four eyes is still a comment made in school.

But a quick, "are you ok??" 🤔 sorted that out

Oh you need to elaborate!!!

Happytorepeatmyself · 10/07/2026 19:55

What does “mental self defence” taught in martial arts look like in reality?

Sounds like she’s already got the tools to close the teasing down then, if she’s making people cry with mental self defence!
2 of mine have worn glasses since aged around 7, and neither have reported any unkind comments. I thought it was a thing of the past TBH!

So if she already has the tools…. 🤷‍♀️

Londonbabyland · 10/07/2026 20:10

@Nopuedeser same here, glad to hear your kids haven't had issues.

I had glasses from age 3/4 to 12. Got called all sorts of names from Joe 90 to Four Eyes. Teachers did nothing at all about the bullying and other kids who needed glasses didn’t like to wear them due to teasing/bullying. I developed a thick skin to the insults but it was hurtful.
