Kids with glasses - how to nip the teasing in the bud?

Any tips to nip in the bud the possible teasing related to wearing glasses (DD Year 4)? The frames are only a few days old and DD loves them. There are occasional playground idiots who made ugly comments though.

I had glasses at 9. Yeah the odd comment but 🤷‍♀️ passed soon enough as really glasses are pretty boring.

DappledThings · 10/07/2026 17:57

Has this already happened or are you just anticipating it? Loads more kids wear glasses than when I was that age. Both mine really want to. Definitely seen more as cool than embarrassing.

You just have to learn to ignore them. They get bored and find something else to focus on.

I wore glasses from 7 and I doubt the comments have changed.

She's happy with her glasses and they are necessary.

Don't be like a relative of mine who was so vain they took their needed glasses off whilst driving and crashed repeatedly.

Londonbabyland · 10/07/2026 18:03

@DappledThings happened today, hopefully with the mental equipment from mumsnet, it would be the last time.

i’d suggest dc approaches anyone being horrible with a “youre just jealous” and flounce off…

Londonbabyland · 10/07/2026 18:05

@user1471538275 oh dear, hope they are alive!
I offered lenses as a back up also

Well they certainly have their downside, the main one being I can see you clearly.

Londonbabyland · 10/07/2026 18:06

@Elieza awesome wording! Thank you

No, this just doesn’t work.

Brilliant!

Happytorepeatmyself · 10/07/2026 18:18

I really wouldn’t worry. Glasses are fundamentally very boring and the comments will dry up very soon, as there really aren’t many!
I just recall some comments etc and that was that. Don’t think I even mentioned to my mum. This was the late eighties though!

fashionqueen0123 · 10/07/2026 18:18

My eldest wants glasses. Apparently they’re the in thing now!
So maybe tell them to keep up with the latest fashion

Yes, it's been seen as cool for quite a long while now (post Harry Potter??)
As with any unkindness, remain calm, and let school/nursery staff know if there are any issues there, but not heard of any from my 2 kids and all their friends.

Bigtrapeze · 10/07/2026 18:24

Mine has worn glasses since Year 4 I think and has never had a comment. She's a teen now and did express an interest in contact lenses so we got some and she had a go but came to the conclusion that she liked herself better in glasses. Apparently she is more 'herself' with them on. I think attitudes have changed since I was at school, luckily, largely due to NHS glasses no longer existing and more people wearing them. Suggest she shrugs and ignores anyone who
mentions them either way.

concertinacornflake · 10/07/2026 18:26

What exactly were the comments?

I'd be tempted to ignore if mild, then just report as bullying if it continues.

WonderWeeksArentReal · 10/07/2026 18:39

Mine have both had glasses since early primary school and no teasing issues that I'm aware of. Only issue was a couple of cases of other DC trying to get hold of them to try them on!

I'd be asking the teacher to nip any comments in the bud.

Londonbabyland · 10/07/2026 18:48

@Pistachiocake @WonderWeeksArentReal it was on the regular playground (not school), so got that kid's mum involved and had a 'disciplinary' session there and then. Both kids were in tears...

@concertinacornflake along the lines of frames giving dumb, ugly etc look mildly put

Really surprised because I thought the teasing of the kind died down since the 80's

TangfasticAddict · 10/07/2026 19:03

I’m quite surprised by this. Maybe it’s because they’re new to glasses, so should any teasing should die off soon?

Mine have both worn glasses since babies and have strong prescriptions, but we do what we can to avoid comments, like choosing flattering frames and paying for extra thinning. But so many children have glasses now, I’m surprised teasing still happens!

ladygindiva · 10/07/2026 19:07

Two of my three kids have work glasses since around year 3 and have never had any comments directed at them.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 10/07/2026 19:11

DD started wearing glasses when she was 4, she was one of three in the class with glasses and nobody ever made comments to her. The school did a lot of stuff around everyone being the same and embracing differences.

Vodkamartini3olives · 10/07/2026 19:15

Three of my kids wear glasses. It's been very rare that anyone has made any comment on them. Is say the best thing is teach your kid to ignore it. Having a ' disciplinary ' with a random kid in a random kid in a playground resulting in both ending up in tears sounds fucking bonkers.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/07/2026 19:37

In 30 years working in primary schools I'm not aware of children being bullied about glasses. The worst thing was other children wanting to try them on.
