Second Baby Feeding Questions

HappyBump · 04/01/2010 06:47

I am expecting my second baby in a couple of weeks and I am hoping to ebf as I did with my first. I have a couple of questions though.

  1. Once my milk supply is established can I re-use the same pump (I had an Avent ISIS Handpump last time), bottle teats, etc. (obviously I will sterilize)?
  1. Those who have bf before and had latching, etc difficulties the first time round was it as painful second time round? (please say no, as it took me about 12 weeks before the nipple fully healed last time).

Yes you can reuse the pump - sterilise it.

I found feeding the second one a complete doddle compared to the first but no-one can really say for sure because every baby is different. But YOU will be more confident and that helps a lot.

Good luck!

I found that all the plastic stuff I used with ds had gone all sticky and I had to chuck it all. Depends how long ago you used it!

You can reuse the pump, bottles, etc but it depends how you feel about the BPA issue as depending on which ones you had last time they will more than likely contain BPA. I would not reuse teats though as they arent supposed to be used for more than a few months at a time.

It might be worth replacing the little valve bits on the pump as they can wear down causing a much less effective pumping action.

Can reuse pump - I replaced bottle teats as old ones looked quite knackered from DS1 chewing on them and anyway DS2 preferred MAM teats instead of Avent. I'd really recommend finding out about local bf support groups for no 2 anyway as I had to go visit a couple of them in the first few weeks after having DS2 as needed to bf in a slightly different hold for him and they really helped out. Good luck with everything.

Second time round I found feeding a doddle too - but not 3rd time so now think it was a combination of me knowing what to do and the baby. Not trying to worry you - but it's worth knowing just in case it takes a while to get back into it.

3rd time still much easier tha 1st even with an awkward baby because I knew it would get better!

Thanks for the responses.

Do you know where I can buy the spare parts for the valve? I looked on-line at the Avent website (and also the Mothercare website) but I couldn't seem to find them. I live overseas so I if I can find them I will have to order on-line and get them shipped (either to here or to my parents in the UK).

All of my stuff is only about 2 years old so I think it might be BPA-free already (will check), and I was bf'ing DS1 up until about 4 or 5 months ago and still using most of the equipment sporadically.

I was thinking I should at least buy new teats ... it would be nice to buy something new for the baby, I haven't actually bought anything else as we seem to have everything already.

You can get them here:

http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Avent-Isis-iQ-Valves/dp/B000PB2QCY

They do make a big difference.

You can order a compleat set of the soft plastic parts here. Unfortunately it's in Dutch... the form is called 'Bestelformulier onderdelen ISIS borstkolf'. I can do you a quick translation if you cant find a better source.
