The BPA bottles issue. Any actions taken?

Can you tell me what everyone is doing about it? If anything at all? I just visited a friend and she has binned all plastic stuff with the "wrong" logo on it. You know, the little triangle with a number inside that is the code for the components of the item. I thought that if I just don't pour hot things on the BPA plastic cups, then it should be ok. Right? I'll probably wait and buy BPA-free bottles or just glass bottles when the new baby comes...

I am slightly confused here too...

According to widpekia BPA ( logo is a triangle with a 7 in or next to it)is present in polycarbinate bottles.

On the mothercare website my ds's bottles are listed as BPA free, on the bottom of the bottle there is a triangle with PC next to it and on the website below avent ( who make tommee tippee bottles) state they contain BPA.

The info on widpekia is very comprehensive, and shows just how low a level can have an effect. Very worrying.

I'm using Tommee Tippee bottles and have just read somewhere nto to put boiling water in them (which ive been doing for some time when taking a bottle out and about as it keeps warm for longer), now worried taht ive caused some damage to DD who is 4 months old and formulak fed?
the media has freaked me out yet again!

emmanj, thats nothing, I dishwash and microwave mine and have put boiling water in them and they were bought in 2005.

They have been used for 2 dc.

Put your guilt away.

We all do the best we can with the info we have available to us.

I'm just hoping my ds (who only has them at night, but will not go down without one) will be willing to use a different bottle!

If the government is going to ban all the BPA bottles, they may be offering compensation, so keep your old ones. Canada banned these bottles last year and I got a gift card from a department store in exchange for my old Avent bottles; didn't need a receipt either.

What about putting boiling water into a BPA free bottle?

Am fortunate in that DS was in hospital last week during the scare, and he was provided with BPA free bottles (that I took home -- they would have gone into clinical waste otherwise )

Hi beautiful, I have just found a web page that has a link for a list of BPA free sippy cups and bottes. Apparantly also Avent were due to bring out a BPA free line in october 08 so have a look on the list.

( i'm v bad at links so here goes!!!)

Feature I listened to on the radio regards BPA said that BPA is what makes the plastic clear and shiny so bottles look more attractive than ones made of slightly cloudy BPA free bottles (I've never seen cloudy bottles though).

I've been using glass bottles from Green Baby for DD2 but find that the neck of the bottles is quite narrow so quite tricky to get scoops of formula in without spilling and also the writing on the bottles showing the amount is starting to rub off! Anyone know of any other glass bottles available?

BPA is also in the coating on the inside of tin cans.

Widpekia has lots of info on how to reduce exposure...

If you've already got Avent teats, and/or a baby who you don't want to change from Avent teats, the easiest thing to do is by the Avent Magic Cups which are already BPA free as they're made from a diff plastic type, as the teats and spouts are all interchangeable They're those brightly coloured ones with handles (which you can take off). They're a damn sight cheaper than bottles too, so everyone's a winner

someone posted on another thread about this - their dad is an expert who knows about chemicals and said not to worry too much, BPA doesn't actually leak that much (although IIRC boiling water may be a problem).

I get your point edam, but some of the findings show that even very low levels can have a negative effect.

Its one of those situations where you will have some people who think

" well they are going to come into contact with allsorts so i'm not overly worried"

and then you will get others who think along the lines of

"If low levels are potentially dangerous then I would rather avoid it, its easy enough to avoid so I will"

Personally I am of the better to be safe than sorry brigade. Hence why I want to find as much independant info as possible - ultimatley tho im not really concerned with all the in and outs or interested in getting into an arguement with anyone(not that I think you are being argumentative at all ) just explaining my position.

Its something that I will never know enough about because I am not a plastics person i'm a mum so I'd rather just find an alternative that i'm happy with and not beat myself up about something which may or may not be a problem.

sparkle Thanks for that! I already have some magic cups so if I just get some teats to fit then i'll be sorted v cheaply! good tip!

The mothercare website is now selling the BPA-free avent bottles but they are expensive

I'm sure avent will phase the BPA ones out once they have sold their existing inventory

Unfortunately the tommee tippee cups all seem to have BPA in them

a lot of the tommee tippee cups dont have bpa e.g the first cup, easiflow cup, tip it up cup, etc

Mam, BornFree, tommee tippee new bpa free closer to nature and avent bpa free bottles all dont have bpa in them.

This gives a list of bpa free bottles/cups

I'm afraid I don't trust the US lists as some of the companies sell diff stuff in the UK vs the US

My TT first cups don't say what they are made of
The TT KOTG cups have a 7 on the bottom
The TT super sippers are okay as they have a 5 on them

But don't forget that not everything with a 7 on it has BPA in, though everything with BPA will have a 7 - i.e. the catagory 7 includes other types as well as BPA. Subtle difference, and unfortunately there's no further way of telling them apart. If it's a coloured plastic and that slightly soft-ish feel to it, then it's highly likely to be non-BPA.

I'm sure that if the TT products were BPA free they would be proclaiming it on their website but they are not
