Please help MamaG's poor nipple!

DS2 is now 13 days old and my left nipple is really rather sore. I was so out of it after the birth/general anaesthetic that I don't think I got the latch right, esp on that breast, and DS2 had tongue tie too.

The tongue tie was snipped when he was 8 days old and feeding has been much better since but I'm still getting that toe-curling pain when he latches on to my left breast!

Any tips to make it easier? Or a bit of hope as to how long it will last!?

TIA

Oh dear, your poor nipple and left breast MamaG.

have you tried those plastic things ?[thinks]

nipple shields?

well done btw.

suiledonn · 17/11/2008 10:01

Hi MamaG, I'm in the same boat. DD is 5 days old and my left nipple is in agony - there was a couple of blisters that have gone sort of crusty since last night. I have another thread going but no one has responded so far. Hope someone will be along to help us soon. Good luck.

CatIsSleepy · 17/11/2008 10:02

i will probably get jumped on from a great height but will suggest it anyway-i used nipple shields for about 24 hours when i was in great pain early on-helped me and dd coped fine. mind you she had a mighty powerful latch (part of of the reason i hurt so much!). One day was enough to let my nipples recover a bit.

hope it gets sorted soon mamaG-i still remember that pain!

apologies if that;s the stupidest suggestion ever....

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 17/11/2008 10:04

Right. Stay away from nipple shields if at all possible.

Have you got Lansinoh?
Do you think the ltach has improved now?

If so:

Apply Lansinoh after every feed.

Do not allow your nipples to dry out, make sure they are moist at all times. If you let them dry out the cracks get worse.

When you wash, don't use any shower gel/soap on your nipps.

You should notice an improvement within a day or two.

Good luck, it will get better.

BrainyBrian · 17/11/2008 10:07

No Cat that is the same answer I gave. If anyone jumps on you I shall be very angry with them.

BrainyBrian · 17/11/2008 10:07

Ewwwww dear

Kbear · 17/11/2008 10:10

Mo always said to me "two weeks" when I was howling with pain bfing DD. She was right, after two weeks the pain eased and we settled into feeding with no problems.

MamaG - I feel your pain

CatIsSleepy · 17/11/2008 10:17

LOL Brian

all i can say is...they helped me when dd latching on had me bursting into tears...but I appreciate not everyone is a fan!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 17/11/2008 10:19

I'm not suggesting they are the product of the devil It's just that they can cause more problems than they solve.

Pannacotta · 17/11/2008 10:21

Poor you MamaG.
Some good advice here a(and elsewhere on Kellymom)

MamaG · 17/11/2008 10:27

sorry am just in middle of a bf

can't type and bf but can scroll

I will keep at it with the lansinoh and will read that link shortly pannacotta - think I'll persevere without the nip shields for now, as they aren't cracked, just sore

I think letting the air get to the the nips is good for healing so wander round braless where you can (INDOORS WITH THE CURTAINS CLOSED OBVIOUSLY MAMAG, NO SCARING THE POSTMAN AGAIN).

MamaG · 17/11/2008 12:10

Now where's the fun in that?!

I would have to say, that Silverette will have your nipple completely healed within 2 days. As much as i used the Lansinoh - and thought it greatly soothed it didn't actually heal the nipple. Whereas the Silverette sooth immediately and heal within 2 days COMPLETELY. All you do is expressed a little milk into each cup and wear them directly on nipples between feeds. There are fantastic. I would actually say they are by far my best most valuable bfing item.

psychomum5 · 17/11/2008 13:52

have you tried feeding him in a different position.

flame sat next to me sugesting you try feeding him 'rugby ball' style, and see how it helps.

if it does, it may suggest a neck issue. she had this with both her two, and a few sessions with the chiropractor helped immensely.

belgo · 17/11/2008 13:55

ooch- It makes my toes curl just at the memory!

I used my own milk on the nipple after every feed, and kept them exposed as much as possible.

It does get better

MamaG · 17/11/2008 14:39

Yes, the pain is the same no matter what position he's in. It does only last about 40 seconds to be fair then it goes for the duration of the feed, so I shouldn't really complain!

andiem · 17/11/2008 14:42

the air thing is completely out now what you need to do is use moist wound healing info here

imnotmamagbutshelovesme · 17/11/2008 14:43

I had pain like that when they first latched on but it eased once they actually started getting some milk.

I hope baby HJ is doing well.

13 days already?

hambo · 17/11/2008 14:46

Took three weeks for the pain to stop with me....twas like a needle getting stuck into my boob every time he latched on - OUCH!

Good luck , I hope it improves soon...

mum2jakeyroo · 17/11/2008 14:47

I tried nipple sheilds with ds1 but they never worked. cream is the only thing that worked for me. good luck and congratulations mamag

MamaG · 17/11/2008 14:48

SydneyB · 17/11/2008 15:37

pannacotta - thanks for kellymom link. ds is now nearly 6 weeks and have cracked right nipple and although i apply lansinoh all the time it stil hurts. just read that link though and did one thing - aim chin to boob first and hurrah, it doesn't hurt! is like miracle. mamag - i literally feel your pain.
