Please help MamaG's poor nipple!

DS2 is now 13 days old and my left nipple is really rather sore. I was so out of it after the birth/general anaesthetic that I don't think I got the latch right, esp on that breast, and DS2 had tongue tie too.

The tongue tie was snipped when he was 8 days old and feeding has been much better since but I'm still getting that toe-curling pain when he latches on to my left breast!

Any tips to make it easier? Or a bit of hope as to how long it will last!?

TIA

have a wee look inside his mouth and make sure he hasn't got thrush. I had similar problems with my DS and it turns out I must've passed thrush onto him at delivery and his mouth was covered (I thiought his white tongue was just milk residue ). My nips were affected too, and were very pink and shiny. It was so sore DH was holding my hands through the feeds at one point and the tears were just streaming down my face. I also resorted to nipple shields for a couple of days until the thrush had started to go.

Also try changing his positioning a wee bit on that side, either further towards or away from your armpit. It could just be that different sized boobs make things a bit different on either side. Or try underarm/football hold.

Another thing.....have you considered a cranial osteopath? I know you had a CS after a lengthy labour. If he had a traumatic delivery it might have caused neck stiffness. We have been to see a CO a couple of times now and DS's latch is much better, especially on his bad side. He was a forceps delivery in the end.

I hope you get it sorted; painful nipples are not much fun at all.

I found air drying made things worse. I used Lansinoh and jelonet and kept them moist all the time. It was the only thing that helped. You are doing a brilliant job - hang in there!

You poor thing! Sore nips are a nightmare.

TBH I found nipples shields helped me enormously, I had really painful thrush on one side and it was threatening my feeding - my breast feeding counsellor recommended I use them for the feeds that were at times I knew would be more painful, late avo/early eves when he clusterfed etc.

Not sure why they seem so unpopular on here?? Her reasoning was that it's better to use them than let the nipple get completely ruined and stop the feeding altogether..

Good luck

Honestly - try a chiro. It worked wonders (with the chick by the time I tried out rugby ball I was so broken that any kind of latching hurt like f*ck). Can't hurt can it?

MamaG · 18/11/2008 12:04

I have to say, today feeding is a tad less painful I've been applying the lansinoh faithfully after every feed and changing position etc. It only hurts for about 5 seconds now, so I think I'll hang in there!

Thanks franny
