latch looks good from teh outside.

but he NEVER comes off on his own.

is windy as hell, too.

passing stools well and colour is good, plenty of wet nappies.

he often gets very hungry and shakes his head trying to get on, so i wind up swaddling him to try to calm him.

has a preference for one breast.

widgey pillow helps positioning a lot.

what's going wrong? his sister was a dream to feed!

i do, but it hurts to even do that.

it really does.

Look at his jaw. Is it moving? Or is he sucking with just his lips?

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 23:38

i cant see his wee jaw, too much boob in the road. big squashy boobs.

at least obama will b president!

Congratulations Expat!!!!

Have you tried feeding him lying down? Lie him on the bed, lie down next to him and dangle a nipple, then roll him towards you. I found this evened out the side preference a bit. Also means you are getting more rest.

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 23:42

his wee jaw is moving. just never a long suck.

i'm breaking out my emergency yankee candle

StretchMarkCatherineWheelQueen · 04/11/2008 23:42

Do you really have to feed on that side for tonight?? Just until you can get some Lansinoh?? If your milk isn't in yet, then you won't be too full.

Try a different hold? He may suck differently then. Rugby hold for example?

Good luck.

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 23:43

with rugby hold he just clamps and i never know how to hold his bottom half

If you are struggling to put all of your nipple in his mouth, then try to prize his jaw open a little bit by pulling down his chin iyswim?? This helped me with dd2 who just wouldn't open her mouth.

StretchMarkCatherineWheelQueen · 04/11/2008 23:47

will this help at all?

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 23:47

he opens it but i cant seem to bring him to boob and get him on in time and he doesnt do long sucks like dd2 and drop off on his own .

There are some tips on the link I put up, on the next page, latching on. Does it work when you swaddle him?? Is it easier??

Why not leave off the right side for tonight, then get cream in the morn. Your milk will come in anyway, won't it?

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 23:53

also he hangs onto wind and moves about on the boob

StretchMarkCatherineWheelQueen · 04/11/2008 23:57

I don't know if you already know this, but just incase you don't. My MW gave me these tips.

Tummy-to-mummy: That one helped me a lot with positioning.

Nipple-to-nose: Just before you 'flick' in your nipple.

Try to keep his chin in close contact to the underside of your boob. Try to make him 'look up' as much as possible. I struggled with that because I have small boobs!

HTH

expatinscotland · 04/11/2008 23:59

thanks!

he went on for a bit just the now and ate and it wasn't THAT bad and then he came off on his own and belched.

then he filled his nappy, which DH is changing.

DH said the difference was that i'm now sitting on the floor with the widgey pillow and not the couch.

Ds still moves around on the boob and it really hurts. really hurts. He's 6 months.

Sorry, haven't many useful suggestions, but someone more knowledgeable may see this.

Congratulations btw. I have a ds after 2 dds and it's really nice!

StretchMarkCatherineWheelQueen · 05/11/2008 00:03

x posts! That's good, maybe you sit differently!

Night!

whomovedmychocolate · 05/11/2008 00:05

Hi Expat - congratulations - he finally came out then?

Okay DS is like this - came out at 7lbs is now over 20 at 14 weeks. He's always hungry and feeds for ages, but it's getting easier now.

It sounds like he's a wriggler and that can be painful. Have you tried swaddling the little bugger so he absolutely cannot move, then getting lots of pillows on your lap so he is at just the right height and angle so he is going on straight? That made a huge difference to me.

Oh and my tits hurt like crazy for the first few weeks because of high prolactin levels, but it did go after a bit.

expatinscotland · 05/11/2008 00:06

thanks.

i have no choice for tonight.

i'm going to nap whilst DH holds him a bit.

he's sleeping again and DH missed his birth.

whomovedmychocolate · 05/11/2008 00:06

Oh and I have to hold my boob in one hand and support the underneath of it with the over (my boobs are 32K so they are quite large) and that seem to stop the dragging effect small babies on big nipples provide. Try that too!

zazen · 05/11/2008 00:07

Best of luck expat and congratulations.
Sounds like my DDs latch - she would be on chewing my nips for hours and never popped off herself.

I had to take Soya Lecithin as her latch was so weird I was getting blocked ducts - it was almost like she was tougue tied. The lecithin emulsified the fats in the milk and stopped the ducts from blocking - might be worth a try.

Also get some lansinoh / lanolin cream (Bepanthen works also and is great for any nappy rash) and just feed off the comfortable nip for tonight.
Have you a breast pump for the other boob?

I'll be thinking of you tonight, you are not alone having a babe with a strange latch and suck.

A bottle of formula won't kill him and will give you a rest. Sometimes the big avent bottle teat helps the suck and latch - it certainly helped give my DD the idea of how to feed. You can always get him back exclusively on the boob. Keep pumping to stim your supply.

thinking of you and congratulations again!

EggyChick · 05/11/2008 00:10

Congratulations!

Look, this is not going to help but it hurt like fuck hell at first with my boy too and we managed it in the end. Good luck!
