Does personality type affect breastfeeding experience? Anyone got any info? Lets do a mumsnet bit of research!

I have had a google briefly but can't find anything at the moment.

I have had a lot of discussion about personality type recently and just completed an online test

It got me to wondering whether personality type has a bearing on the experience duration of breastfeeding.

My test result was ESFJ and I had a great experience.

My sister is ISTJ and had a completely opposite experience to me.

I thought it might be interesting to see what personality types and experiences were in the vastness of mumsnet.

The test doesn't take long if you are up for it

ENTP, utter BF failure but hugely successful in all other aspects of life

Should expand and say that I have strong sensing and feeling preferences,

I wonder whether problem solvers and analytical thinkers have opposite experiences.

In my book here it says that it is natural for ENTPs give less attention to their non-preferres sensing and feeling parts.

I'm very strongly INTP (on properly-administered official Myers-Briggs test). BF DS to 3 years (he self-weaned while I was pregnant), now BFing DD (4.5 months) with no problems.

Oh well eyeballs - your experience blows that out of the water!

INTJ. Took to bf straight away, no problems. But for the last 6weeks/month (something like that) I couldn't wait to finish. I hated it. To the extent that if ever hell does freeze over and I do have another child I will not bf.

I'm INFP. I bf 2 children for 4 years in total.

ENFP - The "Advocate" - successful bf'ing once - not so good the next times

I am ISTJ - The "Examiner"

I am still breastfeeding my 2 year old DD including throughout my recent pregnancy and my 9 day old DS. Did have issues establishing nursing with DD but it has been much easier this time around

Am apparently INFP, but came out as ENFJ on another one not long ago Would say the second is more accurate as I found the questions very polarised on this one - it was often very difficult to choose an answer.

Excellent bf experience after initial hard struggle with ds1. Tandem feeding a 3.3yo and a 11mo.

INTJ and four fabulous experiences. All babies premature (36, 32, 34 and 33wks in order).

A stong intuiton is a good motivator.

I just retook the test online, had mine done properly a couple of years ago too. Was surprised to come out the same if not more so. Tsk, and I thought I'd changed.

You'd need a huge sample size. What effect size would you be looking for? Would a 1% difference in BF rates (initiation rate? liking BF rate?) between one personality type and another be significant? Would 5% be? Or 10% Then you'd have to account for all the other factors that might have influenced BF, you can't attribute any difference you find simply to personality type. I think there is no research (I haven't checked) because it's too difficult to do.

Would love someone with experience of personlity typing to review this thread later when we have a critical mass. I wonder if any kind of theme might emerge.

I did the test twice and got the same result. It can be really hard to try and answer without thinking about it too much isn't it?

cthea - I am not being serious about the research part on mumsnet

I think that there are aspects of a woman's personal makeup which will make breastfeeding either a joy or a trial. There will be no solution for that I am sure.
