Does personality type affect breastfeeding experience? Anyone got any info? Lets do a mumsnet bit of research!

I have had a google briefly but can't find anything at the moment.

I have had a lot of discussion about personality type recently and just completed an online test

It got me to wondering whether personality type has a bearing on the experience duration of breastfeeding.

My test result was ESFJ and I had a great experience.

My sister is ISTJ and had a completely opposite experience to me.

I thought it might be interesting to see what personality types and experiences were in the vastness of mumsnet.

The test doesn't take long if you are up for it

ISTJ, very theory and judging
Fantastic and still bfing at 16 months

ForeverOptimistic · 19/08/2008 08:40

INTP, very strong on all apart from P. Had a difficult time breastfeeding.

Philomytha · 19/08/2008 08:40

I'm INTP (or sometimes INTJ, depending on the mood I'm in when I take one of these thingys). So far I've had an easy time bfing DS, he's 2.9 now and hasn't stopped yet.

SilkCutMama · 19/08/2008 08:47

I am a trained MBTI (personality type) practitioner
MBTI is NOT used for recruitment purposes
It is for development only

It sorts people rather than judges them, therefore it will have very little correlation with competence - be that competence at breastfeeding or competence at cooking etc

derelicte · 19/08/2008 08:50

INTJ - Fabulously easy and happy BFing relationship with both DCs. DD to 14 months, and DS to 20 months.

ESTJ - still breastfeeding at 2.6 yrs, and soon to be tandem feeding, despite some obstacles (had to give up dairy for 18 months as dd intolerant).

princessglitter · 19/08/2008 09:06

I am INFP and the description was definitely me. I found breastfeeding easy and intend to continue to feed 10 month old dd2 till she self weans.

Umlellala · 19/08/2008 09:06

ENFP - another 'advocate'. sounds about right.

NF- visionary...

I only bf dd for 3 weeks (mixed) but have successfully exclusively bf ds for 4 and a half weeks so far this time... taking each day as it comes (which is not how I think apparently )

Didn't Derren Brown do a thing where he worked out everyone's personality type amazingly accurately (trick is, he'd written the same thing for everybody...)

maybelaterdarling · 19/08/2008 09:07

I'm an INTJ apparently. dd1 bf for 12 months, first 5 months required extreme stubbornness. dd2, another 12 months and very easy from the start. dc still going well at 5 months.

Mears, are you going to try to summarise all this info? Would be interesting to see the distribution.

CantSleepWontSleep · 19/08/2008 09:08

Oh, I'm the 'Overseer', temperament SJ (Protector).

Tortington · 19/08/2008 09:15

INFP- Didn't want to breastfeed

SilkCutMama · 19/08/2008 09:17

May I direct you to another thread survey I am carrying out on type and childbirth?? can't do link but it's here somewhere!!

Thanks Mears for the inspiration

ISFJ - "The Defender"
Temperment SJ (Protector)

Breastfed ds1 for 2 years until he self-weaned.
Have been bf'ing ds2 for 6 months so far.

psychomum5 · 19/08/2008 09:23

I am an ENFJ - mentor!!

I found breastfeeding very very hard, but was so determined to do it after being told, very patronisingly by my cousin that I would not manage it as I had pants paint threshold.

in fact, made me bloody minded and 'I WILL DO THIS' attitude, and I did....took four weeks before I could say I was BF succesfully, and stopped with the toe-curling (and that was on four of them too!), but I loved it and fed each for as long as I could, altho none for as long as I wanted (had to stop for medical reasons with me or the baby).

all had 6mths, some more

SilkCutMama · 19/08/2008 09:24

Please look at my childbirth thread

anyone????

DontlookatmeImshy · 19/08/2008 09:27

SCM's thread

TillyScoutsmum · 19/08/2008 09:36

ENFP - the advocate

Bf'd for 6 months after a shaky start. Enjoyed some parts of it but found it hard work and was ready to stop at 6 months (which I was happy with)

Haylstones · 19/08/2008 09:41

#I'm ESFJ.
I fed dd for 18 months and currently bf ds who is 6 months with no probs whatsoever

happynappies · 19/08/2008 09:43

ISFJ - "The Defender"
Temperment SJ (Protector)

Breastfed dd for 20 months until she self-weaned when I was (am) pg with #2. I found it extremely difficult to begin with (toe-curlingly painful, exhausting etc, but managed to exclusively bf for 6 months down to sheer bloody-mindedness and having had a difficult birth a feeling that I owed it to dd to get something right).

JoyS · 19/08/2008 09:44

INTP

Fed DD1 for 18 months, it was lovely.

Feeding DD2 4.5 weeks now, going really well.

hannahsaunt · 19/08/2008 09:52

ENTJ (Chief) - same as proper MB test done through work a few years ago.

BF ds1 until 9mo (stopped reluctantly but has excema that refused to clear)

BF ds2 until he self weaned at 13mo

BF ds3 now 11mo and still going

zazen · 19/08/2008 10:01

Am a ENFJ Mentor as well psycho - and had a rough start but kept on at it - DD self weaned at 9 months.
The Pain! The Tears! The Determination! The Pride

FromGirders · 19/08/2008 10:05

Another defender here - fed ds for 9 months after a difficult start, was quite glad to stop. Fed dd until her third birthday, all went swimmingly from the beginning, no probs at all.

CaptainKarvol · 19/08/2008 10:14

ISTP 'the craftsman' (and another man, on average!).

BF DS for 21 months. Painful at first, but then as easy as anything, and we only stopped because DH was becoming uncomfortable with the idea of an older child bf-ing. Will def. try again with the next one, all being well.
