poll: if you bf beyond 6 months, why/when did you stop?

Before I started bf-ing ds, I had planned to bf to 6 months (and somehow imagined weaning would magically take just 1 day ). Now we've got past the first few difficult weeks, am enjoying it and would like to continue to at least 1 year But I keep reading on here about nursing strikes and am now worrying about how long ds will want to continue for. So, a quick poll. If you stopped after 6 months, was it because you decided you were ready to stop or was it because your dc decided?

dd2 - got serious foodpoisoning had to take medication not really suited for breast feeding. dd2 was 18 months old.

dd3 - weaned herself around 11 months - did not want me anymore.

My overachieving cousin (high flying lawyer) breastfed all 3 of hers until they were 12 months. She had their nanny bring them into the office/court, so she could breastfeed and also expressed. Bags of expressed milk were couriered across the country!

I had the idea that I would do the same - at least the breastfeeding part. Gradually reduced after 9 months to a before bed feed.

Think it was the beginning of the end when she looked at my breast and laughed

ds - about 13 months as it just felt time to stop

dd - 13 months again but might have continued longer this time had I not been pregnant and very very paranoid about miscarrying (not that there's necessarily a link...)

hi mamachris
(got your electricity sorted yet??!)

fed ds1 until 12months, weaned off just after his birthday, mostly cos i wanted to tbh, had set myself a target of 1yr, wanted my 'self' back by that point, then i found out i was pg with ds2, oops!
hoping to feed ds2 to 1yr too, tho MIL is encouraging me to stop before christmas so i can drink! not a great fan of bf!!

ds - stopped at 20 months as I was pg, and wanted my body kindof to myself for a bit.

dd - stopped at 22 months as I just felt it was time.

With both, we introduced a night time milk from a cup before we stopped. Made it easier

With ds2 (only bf ds1 for 3wks) it just sort of fizzled out by about 14mths, he wasn't interested anymore.

Dd1 was about 14mths when I forgot to feed her for two/three evenings on the trot when I had more interesting places to go and people to see! She didn't seem to miss it so it seemed as good a time as any to stop.

Dd2 was nearer 2yo. She discovered her thumb at about 18mths and gradually transferred her affections from me to it. I wasn't sorry, tbh, I'd had enough by then.

DS has just weaned at 23.5 months, with only very minor encouragement from me. He'd been down to just a morning feed for 4 months or so, and was increasingly uninterested in the morning.
