poll: if you bf beyond 6 months, why/when did you stop?

Before I started bf-ing ds, I had planned to bf to 6 months (and somehow imagined weaning would magically take just 1 day ). Now we've got past the first few difficult weeks, am enjoying it and would like to continue to at least 1 year But I keep reading on here about nursing strikes and am now worrying about how long ds will want to continue for. So, a quick poll. If you stopped after 6 months, was it because you decided you were ready to stop or was it because your dc decided?

Stopped feeding DD1 when she was just 2y. Her decision - I was 5m pg at the time, and was prepared to tndem feed! She wasn't so keen once I was pg - I'm sure the hormones make a difference to the taste, and her reaction was the first clue to me that I was pg.
DD2 - have just stopped feeding her, and she is 3y6m. We were down to one feed a day, and I'd had enough, really - I think she would have kept going for ever!

JulesJules · 23/05/2008 09:52

That would be tandem feed

andiem · 23/05/2008 09:58

ds1 12mths he stopped himself said cup one evening and that was it
ds2 11 mths and showing no sign of stopping but I want to at 12 mths so will be having a phased withdrawal of mmmm as he calls it

yummymumkte · 23/05/2008 10:12

I BF dd until she was 15mths. It was me that decided, it was just the bedtime feed she was having and while I loved BF the time came when it just felt like a bit of a pain. dd was not the slightest bit fazed and happily had milk out of a cup instead. She is now 2 and we are expecting a baby in July who I hope to BF for as long. dd is very interested in the whole BF thing, we have been looking at pictures and talking about it a fair bit and she has a renewed interest in my boobs!

i was also planning to give up at six months, exactly because the advice is to breastfeed for 6 months and i just didnt think about what happens afterwards (naive new mum!). having got to 4 months now im dreading spening money buying formula, making bottles (dunno how to even heat up a bottle) sterilising, washing up, not having the spontinatiety of having a never ending supply of food thats sterile, right temp and packed with goodies. not sure of my end date now, seeing how it goes.

minster · 23/05/2008 18:16

dd - 15months, she went on nursing strike & I didn't know better & assumed she'd self weaned.

ds - 19 months & still going, I'm pg again now & wonder if he'll wean or not, I'm happy to tandem feed.

FrannyandZooey · 23/05/2008 18:21

ds was nearly 4
he decided to stop as he didn't need it any more

snickersnack · 23/05/2008 18:25

dd until 18 months - just down to one feed a day at that point and one day I didn't offer and she didn't ask.
ds at 10.5 months - would have carried on but his teeth were causing agonies - not biting but huge puncture wounds in my nipples and nothing I tried seemed to help. But we dropped one feed every couple of days (he was only having 3) and he seemed quite happy with it, even if I wasn't.

bohemianbint · 23/05/2008 18:27

DS slowly cut down and stopped just before he turned one. Was gutted - I swear that's what made me so broody as to get knocked up again soon afterwards!

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 23/05/2008 18:28

we stopped after 2.4years because ds chose to. he simply didnt ask for it anymore so that was that

CantSleepWontSleep · 23/05/2008 18:30

I'd also planned to bf for 6 months, and hadn't really given any thought to what would happen after that. Consequently I'm still going, with dd now 2.3 and me 21 weeks pregnant with number 2! Who knows when I'll stop, but I like to think that it will be dd's decision and not mine.

ruty · 23/05/2008 18:31

ds had just turned 3, was only have a little at night since he had been 2, and I was in early pregnancy. He stopped having it after a few busy days and then when he asked again i said i thought it had all gone and he was ok about it.

MarsLady · 23/05/2008 18:34

I fed all till 18 months. With the DTs I stopped for a salsa weekend and with the others I stopped because I was ready.

LyraSilvertongue · 23/05/2008 18:35

16 months with DS1. Stopped because I had flu and couldn't sit up, let alone bf.
20 months. Stopped because he wanted to.

Posey · 23/05/2008 18:45

Bf dd til 12m. Stopped because it felt right and had been doing some bottles already.

With Ds we stopped completely at over 2, I can't remember exactly, but had done just a bedtime feed from about 18m. Felt it would be nice for dh to do bedtime for a change!

merryberry · 23/05/2008 19:28

i decided, went back to work at 8mths, could never get sustained let down for expressing.

NotABanana · 23/05/2008 19:29

I fed my first two for 6-7 months and my third one until 9 months. I just didn't want to stop with my third and wish I had done a bit longer. It was the only thing about being a mother that I did well and I would love to do it again.

Habbibu · 23/05/2008 19:32

Still bf-ing dd at 19 months, but I'm pretty much ready to stop - some nights ok, more nights I don't like it so much anymore. Still working out how to do it - only 1 feed at bedtime, so shouldn't be too hard, but dd's sleep is fragile sometimes, so do NOT want to stuff it up!

Hi all,

A related question....

I too am thinking of giving up BF at around 6 months - have not managed to do exclusive BF at all due to undiagnosed Tongue Tie.... and so every feed is boobs followed by formula.

I was wondering how many feeds you were all doing after you went back to work (if you did go back)? Just two a day?

I would like to carry on with some feeding after I go back to work, but have seen people mention that their supply drops/stops when they cut down to a couple of feeds a day - is this true?

BabiesEverywhere · 24/05/2008 10:05

Still nursing DD at 21 months (6.5 months pregnant), we'll stop when either my DD or I decides to stop. Happy to try tandem nursing if she wants to still nurse in Summer.

hercules1 · 24/05/2008 11:04

Ds till 4 and dd till 3. I'd had enough, never really enjoyed it anway. I felt I'd done everything I could for them to avoid at the time and future health problems as we have lots of yukky things in the family line.

No more children as I couldnt face breastfeeding again.

WinkyWinkola · 24/05/2008 14:25

I stopped bfing DS at 25 months. I couldn't face feeding him and his sister any longer. I found it repugnant actually and I was shattered.

I hope to feed DD until she's 2 but don't think I can carry on for longer than that. I'd like to have a bit of a break until the next child. Some days I feel a bit over touched, IYSWIM?

I wouldn't have it any other way though and I've generally felt so positive about breastfeeding for longer than average despite some crappy comments from morons.

DS1 - 18 months. was preggers and advised to stop before the amnio. I had gradually cut down anyway. DS1 didn't care

DS2 is 20 months and still feeding. Will start cutting down soon, really sick of it.
