Did no-one else see Casualty? BBC managing to normalise FF again.

I've checked to see if anyone else started a thread about this but it seems no-one has.

Maggie's daughter was whining that she was having trouble feeding the baby and she was going to switch to bottles. Maggie said "breast is best".

Switch to the staff room and Tess is handing over a bottle trotting out the "happy mum happy baby" line.

Then in the pub the mum tells Toby she's "claimed them back" and is no longer feeding.

Why does the BBC persist in this anti-breastfeeding stance? What is the relevance of a BF storyline in Casualty anyway?!!

but australia has much better bf rates, and their soaps portray bf in a much more positive lght.

belgo · 09/05/2008 16:50

carmella in neighbours has had a baby? The last time I saw it she was becoming a nun.

Divastrop · 09/05/2008 16:54

did anyone see that episode of family guy where lois decides to stop bf stewie(who i think is meant to be about 12 months)?it was the most accurate portrayal of bf i think ive seen on tv(he refused the bottle and kept trying to get to her boobs, which were so engorged and painful she gave in and started feeding him again in the end).from an adult comedy cartoon.

tiktok · 09/05/2008 22:54

Aussie soaps are very good on bf.

It's UK soaps and dramas that get it wrong

tortoiseSHELL · 09/05/2008 23:00

I don't think I have ever seen anyone breastfeed on British television. Which is shocking tbh.

alright · 10/05/2008 09:26

as much as every breastfeeder wants to see breastfeeding become more common, myself included, in my recent experience of breastfeeding i am in the minority. if the soap is trying to accuratly portray real life, in my real life post natal group out of 20 mothers there is 2 bfing and the group spent most of the time discussing bottles and even got a pamphlet on bottle feeding. as a new bfer (14 wks now!) i would so love to see others doing it in real life and on tv so i can feel im not in some awkward minority but you know what round my way, thats what bfing is. in a way ff on tv is portraying real life accuratley as much as it breaks my heart all those things about claiming boobs back, sharing the responsiblity of feeding, etc i have heard in real life

nappyaddict · 10/05/2008 09:35

also i should imagine bfing is quite hard to act and the actresses may not feel comfortable "breastfeeding" a baby that isn't theirs.

Divastrop · 10/05/2008 17:14

nappyaddict-only a very crap and unprofessional actress.i cant imagine pretending to bf a baby would be worse than snogging or pretending to have sex with someone you dont fancy.anyway, they could easily suggest the baby was being bf,just show the woman holding the baby and starting to undo/lift her top then cut to another scene.

The advert that's on at the moment shows a young woman BF and she hasn't even pulled her t-shirt up, but you don't really notice it unless you are looking. (I was wondering how discrete she was being lol) It could also be done with a doll.

It's funny though the difference between the characters that do and don't breastfeed. Career minded, independent Tanya gives a bottle but dippy-hippy Honey breastfeeds. How about the Dawn storylines about breastfeeding? She did once in the hospital and then gets home and can't be bovvered so tells Carly to just give her a bottle.

Breastfeeding rates are better than 10%, I'm sorry if you are in an area where they're not, it can't be easy to feel like you are in the minority.

nappyaddict · 12/05/2008 08:36

which advert is that that? i don't think i've seen it.

TinkerbellesMum · 12/05/2008 10:12

This one

nappyaddict · 12/05/2008 10:20

that's a good advert - the other one was a bit too staged i thought and wasn't realistic. are these actually being shown on tv cos i've never seen them on there but then i don't really watch that much tv. I was looking and I can't tell whether she's pulled it up or not tbh. Think the baby may have been a doll like you said.

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 12/05/2008 10:34

divastrop - lol @ that family guy episode.

re: BF on neighbours (or any show for that matter)
even if they do portray a BF mother they never do get it right do they?
carmella has a new born. they never show her stuck to the sofa all day while she nurses. mayeb it wouldn't make great television but one scene where she metnions it might be useful. many mothers don;t know about MN and if they saw a mom on TV with a baby who was cluster feedling they may realize that it IS normal and that they DO have enough milk and that they DON'T have to top-up.
just a bit of realism would be nice.

fabsmum · 12/05/2008 10:43

Do you remember when Holby City had loads of storylines set in the maternity unit because of dippy lesbian midwife Mickey (catchphrase "just hope up on the bed and I'll see if we can sort you out your epidural....)?

Did you EVER see a single baby breastfeeding on that programme? Despite the fact that they had a birth every couple of weeks.....

Divastrop · 12/05/2008 11:41

fabsmum-i dont remember any of the babies surviving long enough to have a feed on holby city

BouncingTurtle · 12/05/2008 11:45

Didn't see that episode of Casualty but the one they had on Saturday gone shocked me as they had a baby in a bouncer on top of a kitchen work surface, then mum left the baby to answer the door! Was fully expecting story line where baby and bouncer fall and baby injured...

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 14/05/2008 10:06

update on neighbours and BF: carmella is bottle feeding now. they mentioned getting the baby a bottle yesterday. I though Australia were big on BF? (although yes, it could be EBM)
