Tell me I am right and this is tosh - GP tells me I must drink at least 2 pints of milk a day to 'make milk'.

ah, i get it. he must drink bull semen to make his semen.

JodieG1 · 10/04/2008 15:18

you're right, it's tosh, of the highest order.

pinkyminky · 10/04/2008 15:22

Ha ha ha ha ha. At least he/she didn't say you had to graze with the cows or something. The oldies are always the best. (Yes it's UTTER tosh).

hercules1 · 10/04/2008 15:26

You dont need to ensure you drink enough fluids. I drink very little in the day, never have drunk much but breastfed fine for 7 years. If you are thirsty drink as you would anyway if you are thirsty.

susiecutiebananas · 10/04/2008 15:31

Was going to say, utter rubbish about the milk = milk.

but plenty of fluids do = more milk and less dehydration for you. Complain about him/her to practice manager and so on... Its simply not on, that some Health Care Practitioners impart such nonsense to patients. I mean, unfortunately, not all of his patients will have as much common sense etc. Many people take Drs at there absolute word (scarily)

I think that I ate far too much chocolate as Izzy is now a total chocoholic, and can smell it at 20 paces, in wrappers and everything. I think I really did produce chocolate milk...

DaisySteiner · 10/04/2008 15:35

susiecutiebananas - drinking plenty of fluids doesn't make you produce more milk, this is a widely-believed myth. As long as you drink when you're thirsty and are not majorly dehydrated you will produce as much as you need.

LazyLinePainterJane · 10/04/2008 15:36

Where do they get this shit from?

Did you ask how much Dr Pepper he drank on the way to his qualification?

hercules1 · 10/04/2008 15:36

No, you just drink to thirst which you do anyway.

noodleh63 · 10/04/2008 15:39

My mum told me the same thing about milk = milk, so I think your doctor is about 30 years out of date!

hercules1 · 10/04/2008 15:40

My mil told dh to make sure I drank horlicks everyday

DaisySteiner · 10/04/2008 16:02

Where do they get this shit from? Presumably from eating it using his own logic!

AdamAnt · 10/04/2008 16:05

LOLOL at onepieceoflollipop

susiecutiebananas · 10/04/2008 16:24

Daisy, I actually meant, if you are dehydrated, you do not produce as much milk. You simply don't, that is not a myth I don't mean you don't produce any. the reduction may not be noticeable for many.

I know that when I had not had enough to drink my milk production just wasn't as good. I knew, because DD would be hungrier.

You need a certain amount of fluid every day, to simply keep your metabolism going. cellular metabolism requires fluid and energy. Producing an extra fluid requires more of this activity, therefore you need for fluid ( and food) does increase.

susiecutiebananas · 10/04/2008 16:27

I also didn't want to say fluid = milk, as obviously it is more than that which is needed. So I put fluid = more milk. because, it does = more than if you don't drink anywhere near enough. not that you increase your supply by increasing a normal fluid intake.

Actually I give up, trying to explain myself. I know what I"m saying is correct and research based. just not getting it across properly. Too tired tbh.

MrsBadger · 10/04/2008 16:27

For your milk supply to drop significantly you have to be lost-in-the-desert type dehydrated.

Drinking to thirst is all you need.

Are you sure he's a real doctor?

doggiesayswoof · 10/04/2008 16:34

PMSL at "avoid crisps - they'll make the milk crunchy"

Genius onepieceoflollipop!

Slubberdegullion · 10/04/2008 16:35

Obviously it's rubbish....................

but

Doctors don't (afaik) get taught much (if anything at all) about lactation at medical school

nor when they are JHO's

They might if they do some Obs & Gynae as SHO's

They might if they do Obs & Gynae when they are training to become a GP

They might if they are mothers themselves or have a spouse or partner who breastfeeds.

There are a lot of mights there, and jennifer, your GP is wrong, but hey he is still human.....

There are ways and means of telling him he is wrong (maybe just a polite letter with some up to date breasfeeding info), rather than a complaint.

Just an idea.......

BITCAT · 10/04/2008 16:35

Fucking idiot! I was told good diet, plenty of fluids..ie water and relaxed attitude.
I got very thirsty whilst bf, and from what i here from most women its much the same.
Stress can interfere with bm, and i have never heard so much rubbish..i would report him! Giving out duff information..1st timers may actually listen.

hercules1 · 10/04/2008 16:36

You dont need a good diet either. Nor does stress affect it unless you've had a huge shock like a death or something.

hercules1 · 10/04/2008 16:37

Nor a relaxed attitude. How many people are relaxed with a baby?

doggiesayswoof · 10/04/2008 16:38

Fair enough slubber, you are right there, but then why does he say anything at all? It's the spouting shite in a confident manner that gets me.

Bitcat I don't think stress is an issue with lactation tbh.

youknownothingofthecrunch · 10/04/2008 16:38

Your GP is a genius - after all everyone knows that cows have to drink milk to produce milk, don't they? All lactating mammals prove this with their daily milk consumption.

Wot an eejut.
