Hi all

My 5 week old hasn't had any sign of a poop since 12am last night. Now 6:45 pm

She is feeding well and still weeing?! Is she just starting to hold her bowl movements more now?

Would appreciate any advice x

I am exclusively BF her and she is still passing gas

It's fine, don't worry. Up to a week is normal

JulyDreams · 16/08/2022 18:52

Thank you! @dancingmice she's never done that before

It’s completely normal for breast fed babies to go several days without pooing. It’s one of the benefits that never gets mentioned.

As long as she is comfortable then don’t worry. If she is uncomfortable she will start drawing her legs up.

Pinkflipflop85 · 16/08/2022 18:57

Both mine would happily go for more than a week without pooping (breastfed).

Was always a surprise when they eventually did! 😂

JulyDreams · 16/08/2022 19:03

Thank you SO much @Pinkflipflop85 @Worldgonecrazy you've given me so much reassurance. She as slightly pulling her legs up earlier so just keeping an eye on her.

All normal, please don’t panic. EBF babies can go for ages. My first went 10 days without going when he was around 5 weeks old! Just prepare yourself for it when it does come, could be a messy one!

JulyDreams · 16/08/2022 21:26

@jamsandwich1 thank you!! I'll keep myself braced for it 😆

Update: still preying for the poop!

We had this but he was straining a bit so we have him some orange juice diluted in boiled water - only like a tablespoon- it worked so quickly and his bottom was like a sausage factory of a stream of green poo for ages ! He was so happy afterwards !

JulyDreams · 17/08/2022 21:57

@Polkadotpjs we have the straining!
Not all the time, mainly when she's awake only. It's worrying as I don't want her to be in pain but my health visitor has said it's normal.

My daughter had formula top ups for a month and when we got rid them she pooed round the clock - like 11 times a day at one point. We thought she might be ill but eventually a lovely GP figured it out. I thought EBF kids pooed a lot, all mine did.

My BFF's child was EBF and pooed once a week if that, and was told it was normal.

Norachance · 17/08/2022 22:51

Mine used to go about once a week or ten days. I was told by La Leche League at the time that breast milk is so perfect for babies that every bit is used and there is less waste.

Norachance · 17/08/2022 22:52

By the way when he did go it would be top to toe changing Grin

Eixample · 17/08/2022 23:15

Completely normal but brace yourself for when it does come and have a spare adult top in the changing bag too.

PritiPatelsMaker · 18/08/2022 10:00

If you're worried, just offer an extra feed Wink

JulyDreams · 18/08/2022 14:24

Thanks for all the responses! DD is very uncomfortable. We have offered infacol to see if that may help.

If she's uncomfortable, does that ease if you feed her?

JulyDreams · 18/08/2022 14:32

@PritiPatelsMaker yes it eases once she is fed. Then about an hour after she is back to pulling her legs.

She is pulling her legs up and going red as if straining for poop 😢

Have you tried some gentle tummy massage while in the bath? Use clockwise movements to get things heading in the right direction. We achieved a big clear out that way once!

JulyDreams · 18/08/2022 14:36

@Pinkflipflop85 we've tried that a couple of times but no use. Perhaps we may have not been doing it for long enough?!

Once she starts straining I'd pop her back in the boob.

Massage and a bath might help and sometimes going for a walk in a sling helps too.

trrk · 18/08/2022 16:34

Do you have a bouncer? My 6 week old (combination fed) only poops every 2-5 days at the moment which is also causing me concern. All her recent poops have been in the Baby Bjorn bouncer which has become known as the poopy chair.

This, feeding them can trigger a poop if they're ready to go 😁

Thanks all for your responses! Always a worrying time. Would gripe water help?
