SMA GOLD ON EASTENDERS?

Dalrymps · 03/01/2008 20:43

I probably don't know what i'm on about but i just flicked on to eastenders and during one scene there was a carton of SMA Gold on the surface in the background, it was the house of the one who has just had the baby with the ginger husband i think (not too sure cause i don't really watch it), anyway i think her baby in it is quite young...
Anyway, i was just wondering if this is allowed, i mean, isn't it like an indirect form of advertising formula for newborns? I'm not totally against formula or anything, I mix feed myself, I just think it seems like their advertising it when they shouldn't? Any thoughts on this?

Mine were saggy to start with, yet they've got no worse through 3 years of b/feeding!!!!!

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 23:46

It's irrelevant though, PIJC - the brand shouldn't have been on display because it breaches the Code. As SMA doubtless know, because they've been in trouble over the Jordan stuff recently.

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 23:47

Yep, DH fine, thank you.

haditfortheday · 03/01/2008 23:47

Twinklemegan- I saw film too, if seen before bfing may not understood, now found v. funny & a good way of mentioning bfing in a film!

Not seen ee, not surpirised, not read whole thread but expect its product placement. no comment but, , yet again.

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 03/01/2008 23:48

the milk isn't the right colour to be ebm.

PussinJimmyChoos · 03/01/2008 23:48

When I was breastfeeding I had EBM in the fridge, a back up carton on the side in case my let down didn't work and DS was screaming with hunger and I also breastfed.

I am not being pedantic - am just saying there are reasons why it could have been on the side - doesn't necessarily point to formula feeding.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/01/2008 23:49

I realise that my post came somewhat out of the blue, having been lurking on this thread, and then posting when I felt I had something relevant to say.

In hindsight, the relevance was tenuous, to say the least.

I apologise.

stripeymama · 03/01/2008 23:50

There is no reason that I can think of for EE to find it necessary to have branded formula shown clearly in the programme.

VictorianSqualor · 03/01/2008 23:50

Oh for goodness sake. I'm sure you did
Whatever, it doesn't matter, it was ILLEGAL PRODUCT PLACEMENT.

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 23:50

Puss, it's not meant to be there.

It's not meant to be there.

It doesn't matter what reason it's there for, it might be because Tanya drinks it herself because she has a sneaky baby bottle fetish, but it's not meant to be there.

It's just not meant to be there.

lulumama · 03/01/2008 23:50

there are reasons yes, but if it crosses a legal boundary, it is a whole other ball game.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/01/2008 23:51

PussinJimmyChoos · 03/01/2008 23:52

What do you mean by 'I'm sure you did'

Twinklemegan · 03/01/2008 23:52

PIJC - unfortunately I should think the reason the carton was there was because the props team thought "new baby, let's stick some formula in shot to set the scene". Or god forbid they were lobbied by SMA to put it there. I don't think they will have gone through the kind of thought process you mention.

VictorianSqualor · 03/01/2008 23:53

Oh, and I may be really sad, but I just rewatched it, when Sean goes to get the keys out of the drawer there is babyfood on the side. Isn't that too illegal to be advewrtised as under 6 months, which baby most definitely is not.
They are quite obviously flouting guidelines and rules for no good reason.

Twinklemegan · 03/01/2008 23:54

Exactly how old is this baby then? Sounds to me like someone in props got a bit too enthusiastic.

PussinJimmyChoos · 03/01/2008 23:54

Now the babyfood thing I agree with - no reason for that to be there at all!

Monkeybird · 03/01/2008 23:54

PIJC you are deliberately missing the point. Millions of people watch EE. Millions. Formula advertising is controversial and additionally the BBC is banned from promoting specific products anyway. It is a public service broadcaster therefore has to comply with public health advice where relevant.

You know, as do we, that a packet of formula in full view on the side or wherever, counts as product placement of some sort, thereby offering a subtle form of support to those millions of people that formula 'is a good thing'. To many it is. But to say so on TV when BF messages are so very few and far between and so very hard to get right is a public wrong.

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 23:55

As I say, there's a detailed document that lists every bit of product placement in EE (as in any other programme) and it has to be okayed. It also lists references to all sorts of other things - smoking, swearing, sexual references, etc, etc. So they'll know what was in the shot very well indeed. It wasn't a mistake.

VictorianSqualor · 03/01/2008 23:56

BTW, now whilst I rewatch EE to find faults in the brannings kitchen, now is when you can tell em to 'get a life'

lulumama · 03/01/2008 23:56

i think that there are two issues here: the legal issue, and the normalisation of bottle feeding, the latter being a lot more emotive.

for every woman who has struggled to breastfeed, and ended up reaching for the formula on the flawed advice of HCPs or MWs or friends and family, this kind of glib treatment of breastfeeding is not good. there needs to be more positive sightings of it.. and in TV shows with millions of viewers, taht is a good place to start. imo. as a bottle feeder.

Twinklemegan · 03/01/2008 23:57

In that case I'd love to know who decided they needed baby food - that's just ridiculous (is this the baby that was born at Christmas btw?)

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 23:57

Monkeybird, I do wish that the BBC didn't promote things, but chat shows wouldn't exist on the Beeb without them advertising the guests' products.

Imagine a Jonathan Ross show where he doesn't say "now, you've got a new DVD out" and hold it up to the camera...

He's not MEANT to do it, but doesn't stop him.

PussinJimmyChoos · 03/01/2008 23:57

Lol Victorian I wouldn't mind re-watching it just to see Sean Slater....there is something about him...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/01/2008 00:01

It's those eyes.........they sparkle.......
