Did you have any health implications at all whilst growing up up until now?

The results will be skewed because in the past formula feeding was done by the rich and was fairly uncommon. You need to talk to 90s+ kids because that is the generation when formula became truly accessible to all.

You will probably find that for poorer kids whose parents knew nothing about nutrition or often couldn’t even read the packet (I worked in a nursery in the late 90s and used to help parents decipher formula instructions!), have faced poorer outcomes. Obesity when the parent errs on the side of caution and starts overfeeding (thus setting them up for a lifetime of this) or those for whom it was too expensive and who gave up too early setting their kids up for obesity / ill health later on as a result.

It has nothing to do with formula and everything to do with the person giving that formula if that makes sense?

I was entirely FF and at the age of nearly 50 am extremely healthy with no allergies or illnesses.

Theunamedcat · 15/07/2021 19:57

I'm a national dried baby milk baby they withdrew it from sale after me due to safety concerns according to my mother not to sure if she was taking the piss I have loads of health issues but those are prevalent in my mainly breastfed family so im guessing its more genetic less formula related

nildesparandum · 15/07/2021 19:57

I was one of five children who were all bottle fed.We were all fit and healthy in our young years. We are now aged between 77 and 64.
One of my sisters died suddenly aged 69.
I developed emphysema four years ago.

DinosaurDiana · 15/07/2021 19:57

I was. Had eczema as a kid, but all my cousins on DM’s side had asthma/eczema/hayfever and our GD died of asthma. So maybe it was genetic.

moofolk · 15/07/2021 19:58

I was bottle, my sister was breast fed.

I have allergies etc and she doesn't.

She's overweight and I'm not.

There's no real way of telling if the feeding had anything to do with that aspect of my health, but I have the same body type and health problems as my dad.

She has the same body shape etc as my mum.

I'm generally fitter and healthier and more active.

Like my dad.

I regret not feeding my own babies for longer but it was the right choice for me at the time.

ellesbellesxxx · 15/07/2021 19:59

I was bf for 6 weeks then ff. my brother was only ever ff… he never gets ill!

ellesbellesxxx · 15/07/2021 19:59

I have lactose intolerance but it didn’t come on until my 20s

marshmallowmilk · 15/07/2021 20:00

i was. very severe asthma, eczema and food allergies for me

SuperSange · 15/07/2021 20:03

I was, early seventies. Been very healthy all my
life, and no allergies or intolerances at all.

fantasmasgoria1 · 15/07/2021 20:03

I was formula fed as was my brother. my Fiance was formula fed also. we don't have any health issues. well I do, I have a serious and complex mental illness, issues with my spine, nerves etc but nothing that could be attributed to formula feeding! My children were formula fed and no health issues.

tofuschnitzel · 15/07/2021 20:06

Why do you want to know?

I find it strange that no one would ask such questions about breastfed babies, but formula feeding is apparently fair game. If a child has health issues, no one would suggest it is because they are breastfed. Why is is ok to ask that question regarding formula fed babies? Correlation is not causation. You can't say that X developed a health condition simply because they were formula fed. It's not that easy to pinpoint and it is disingenuous to suggest that it is.

I think these threads are hugely damaging and not remotely supportive of parents who have to formula feed their babies. We should be supporting each other, not suggesting that formula fed babies will develop health problems.

noblegreenk · 15/07/2021 20:07

I was formula fed. I'm very healthy, in fact I'm very rarely ill and the only time I've ever been to hospital was when I was pregnant and giving birth.

kowari · 15/07/2021 20:07

Was it really done by the rich in the 80s? My parents were young and working class, couldn't afford disposable nappies for me in the early 80s and I was FF from three months. Same for my siblings in the late 80s and mid 90s. Also, I'd have thought there would be plenty of 90s babies on here?

Gatehouse77 · 15/07/2021 20:08

All formula fed in my family too. No health implications that aren't attributed to family - genetic or hereditary.

JacquelineCarlyle · 15/07/2021 20:08

@ladygindiva

yes , me and my brother, born in 70s, mum just didn't fancy breastfeeding. ..we are and always have been extremely healthy and my immune system absolutely rocks. Both well above average academically too without wishing to sound arrogant, in fact my brother's practically a genius.
This is very similar to me and my brother also - born in the late 70s.
Anon9990 · 15/07/2021 20:09

Born in the 80s formula fed from birth… no health issues
Formula feed my baby too x

romdowa · 15/07/2021 20:09

I was and I have chronic illnesses but they are all genetic and no matter what I fed , it was in my genetics ready to strike. I also know loads of people with my conditions that were breastfed and are just as sick. It might make a difference for some things but not for everything.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/07/2021 20:10

Breastfed for the first few days of life at most, and may well have had formula top ups during that time, as my mum struggled with feeding - hardly surprising as I was born in hospital in early 1960s, with all HCPS preaching rigid 4-hourly feeding schedule - I assume from birth. I was certainly formula fed once we were home, and my brother was ff from birth I think.

Both of us pretty healthy now. I have cast iron digestion. Mild hayfever. Have had occasional eczema but not for a long time now. Not much else, and certainly nothing I'd connect with how I was fed from birth.

My husband was probably also ff (his mother died a long time ago, nobody else to ask) and is one of the healthiest people I know, even in his mid 60s. He had asthma as a child but I think that had a lot to do with living in a house where two adults were smoking quite heavily, and with air pollution outside from coal fires as well.

Needawayout · 15/07/2021 20:11

FF 70's baby to working class parents. V healthy no allergies, top of the class throughout PS.

youngandbroken · 15/07/2021 20:12

Oh also me and my partner (and our brothers and sisters) are all 90's babies, except for my little brother who was born in the 00's. Other than my elder sister who was breastfed for a few weeks, we were all formula fed from birth and are all healthy other than my older sister who has fibromyalgia and BIL who has epilepsy (genetic).

aprilanne · 15/07/2021 20:14

What is the point of this goady post .formula breast does it really matter
As long as baby fed and healthy
You cant attribute health issues to formula feeding .because you could breast feed but smoke so that's hardly healthy I doubt you can look at someone in there 40 s and say yes IBS that's because you went breast fed
My children are strong as oxes and yet were all formula fed
They encouraged it I the 90s
So both you and the nurses got a sleep .in hospital.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 15/07/2021 20:14

Me and my 3 sibling (aged 50 plus) all FF.

One sibling has had Bowel cancer.

The others have had no real health issues other than sport injuries.

Northernsoullover · 15/07/2021 20:16

I was and I'm quite robust for a middle aged woman (fingers crossed)

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 15/07/2021 20:16

@WithLoveFromMyselfToYourself

Formula fed in 1970/71. I wasn’t the healthiest child, I’m smaller than my parents and got thyroid cancer at 12 but I wouldn’t put that down to formula feeding. I think passively smoking at least 40 Senior Service/ Players No 6 Plain a day might not have helped though. Including in the car with the windows shut tight Confused
