Will I be reported if I refused to put Callum on formula??

The SCBU nurse just phoned me and said that if Callum hasn't gained weight in 2 weeks, I have to put him onto formula. Apparently the consultant has said this.
I have 30 bottles of high engery formula here which I still haven't given to him (am supposed to topup with 30ml once a day via the feeding tube) but I really really don't want him to have formula...
If we refuse, will be reported to SS for not doing the right thing??

The dietian phoned me today, we have to up his topups to 50mls 8 times a day, and keep breastfeeding. She has also put in an urgent request for us to get an appointment at the clinic.

Misdee · 29/11/2007 19:41

why? is he not gaining enough? has he been weighed this week?

sparklygothkat · 29/11/2007 19:46

The dietian is very pro-breastfeeding but said he has a severe case of Failure to thrive. She said the extra milk in the topups of EBM will help him get back up the graph (he dropped from the 50th percentile to below the 0.4th)

Weighing day tomorrow

Good luck, sparkly!

THis post made me talk to my friend who had similar problems and she said her 2 never gained anywhere near 5oz a week ihe was in fact her dd never even hit the graph until she was 18 months old. THis caused my friend so much anguish and she feels conrtibuted to her PND because she was under so much pressure from health professionals and felt blamed for doing something wrong.

In the end it was a dietician who had never met her but who had the case put in front of her called her up, looked at her diet diary etc and never even bothered making an appointment to see her, she asked about family history of sized babies, family now height weight etc and decided that all these other people had been rediculous her dd was probably never going to be big, she was gaining a couple of oz a week and as long as she wasn't losing weight they were not going to be too concerned. All this was done over the phone.

Now she is 4 and still tiny but perfect in every other way, has developed fine but is not very tall and very slender.

You are doing a fantastic job and well done for sticking to your guns. You should be an inspiration to many.

popsycal · 30/11/2007 10:47

good luck

sohappyicouldcry · 30/11/2007 10:56

Good luck !
We went through all of this, although not to the same extent. The pressure is unbelievable and doesn't half make you feel inadequate with your BF'ing. I really do wish you luck .
P.s. DD is now 16mths and is up to above 9th centile now from being consistently below all of them up 'til 34 wks when she eventually hit the 0.4th ! Fingers crossed for you and Callum.

Hi Sparkly

What a lovely little boy! You're doing brilliantly persevering with bf, especially as you have other dcs. Being a producer of tiny babies myself, (4lb and 5lb 2oz) I know how challenging they are!

I've been following this thread with interest, as it brings back memories of when ds was born 5 weeks early at 4lb. He was in SCBU for 3 weeks, 1st week nil by mouth on TPN, then fed by NG in gradually increasing increments of EBM. He had been discharged with a prescription of Fersamal (iron supplement), Abidec (vitamins) and folic acid, to be given orally, formula was never suggested. The vits and iron smelled yucky and resulted in interesting nappies but I guess they helped supplement bf. Were you offered supplements at all? I guess different health authorities do things differently.

At home, he wibbled around on the 0.4 centile until he was 10wks, and didn't gain much some weeks, but fortunately, I was under the care of sensible HVs, who saw by his alertness and activity that there was little to worry about. He was holding his head up at 3 weeks even!

I do hope everything goes well for you, and that little Callum shows the health professionals how well he's doing. Good luck!

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 12:34

He has the vits. they smell so bad.. He can hold his head and is very strong.

Thanks all for your kind words, its has made me more derminate to continue BF.
