Will I be reported if I refused to put Callum on formula??

The SCBU nurse just phoned me and said that if Callum hasn't gained weight in 2 weeks, I have to put him onto formula. Apparently the consultant has said this.
I have 30 bottles of high engery formula here which I still haven't given to him (am supposed to topup with 30ml once a day via the feeding tube) but I really really don't want him to have formula...
If we refuse, will be reported to SS for not doing the right thing??

emsiewill · 30/11/2007 16:48

Just read this thread from the start and am for you - well done for sticking to your guns, I can only imagine how hard it's been...

mears · 30/11/2007 17:17

That is brilliant news - well done you. Hopefully he will soon be strong enough to take good breastfeeds with reducing top-ups. You are an inspiration

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 17:25

I am not going to tell the SCBU nurse that we haven't given the formula until she starts on about how fab the gain was and how the formula must have worked.... then drop the bombshell that actually he hasn't had any at all!!!!!

Haven't posted before but just wanted to say this is fantastic news!

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 17:34

I would have given up BF if I wasn't so bloodlyminded and had the support of you lots... thanks

so sorry you're going through this sgk

I was pressured into giving my ds formula when he was in the special care unit, for similar reasons.

I was gutted about it but it didn't put him off breastfeeding. He has exclusively breastfed since leaving the hospital so don't feel that you have blown it if you give a bit of formula.

Having said that I am still angry that I gave in - I was told afterwards that it wasn't necessary.

I really feel for you being pressured like that, I remember how nasty it feels and how hard it is to stick to your guns.

big hugs

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 17:37

ILB, He has gained 9oz this week without any formula topups!! Still BF..

well done SGK I am v impressed. Just goes to show how excellent your EBM is . Well done for refusing to give in to pressure, it's so often based on nothing but protocol, and if asked to justify it the hcps can't really produce anything factual.

FromGirders · 30/11/2007 18:11

Well done! I want to give you one of the stickers from the cbeebies magazine that says "I did it and I feel proud!"

Inspirational is the word. I might have to save this thread for future reference.

hoppybird · 30/11/2007 18:40

Brilliant news, sparkly!

And bloodyminded is certainly the right word! I know how much I became that way about only giving breastmilk when I was late one time to SCBU with my EBM and the nurses gave ds formula. He vomited the whole lot back up. I became so bloodymindedly committed to bf after that, I'm proud to say I bf to 18 months without a single bottle of forumla.

Again, well done!

cmotdibbler · 30/11/2007 19:11

Go Callum, go Callum ! What a fab weightgain ! That just can't be failure to thrive can it ?

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 21:48

can't wait to see the SCBU nurse's face when she realises that we haven't given the formula and he has gained lots!!

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 22:11

Only thing me and the HV are worried about is if the SCBU nurse says 'tube out' (she has done it each time he has gained well) and then we are back to square one. So must stand my ground on that, the tube stays for now..

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 30/11/2007 22:36

I agree sparkly - it's worth waiting until he's gaining well with only a little topping up. If he pulls it - as he will once he gets those arms waving around you could leave it out for a couple of days and see how you go. And get the camera out for some 'tubeless' photos

hunkermunker · 30/11/2007 22:40

Oh, Sparkly! That's brilliant news! I bet you actually were sparkly when you saw his weight gain!

I opened this thread with my fingers and toes crossed whilst it loaded that I was going to see and not or !

Don't worry about tube out - he's gaining with it in, he will gain with it out one day, and I'm sure that day will be soon, but for your own peace of mind, you'll probably want him to have a few weigh-ins where he gains rather than the two steps forward one step back that you've had recently.

As for the SCBU nurse, I wish I could see her face when she realises you didn't give him any formula!

NorthernLurker · 30/11/2007 22:43

Bravo to Callum - and an even bigger bravo to SGK - good work on the milk! Really pleased to see this - hope the scbu nurse says something nice!

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 22:48

hM I will describe her face, when she realises that we haven't given any formula, just for you!! I thhink it will be like this >>>>>> lol

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 30/11/2007 22:54

I am thinking she'll swallow her pride (without choking - just) and will say soemthing on the lines of 'well done' - then how are you going to resist the temptation to say ' no thanks to you'?

DanJARMouse · 30/11/2007 22:58

BLOODY FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go Callum and WELL DONE Sparkly - you are an inspiration!

sparklygothkat · 30/11/2007 22:59

Not sure how I will be able to resist commenting 'no thanks for you'
I think because she was on holiday for over a week, and because I knew I had the backing of my HV, BF HV and the Association of Breastfeeding mothers, I was able to relax and not worry so much, which helped with letdown and feeding..
