Will I be reported if I refused to put Callum on formula??

The SCBU nurse just phoned me and said that if Callum hasn't gained weight in 2 weeks, I have to put him onto formula. Apparently the consultant has said this.
I have 30 bottles of high engery formula here which I still haven't given to him (am supposed to topup with 30ml once a day via the feeding tube) but I really really don't want him to have formula...
If we refuse, will be reported to SS for not doing the right thing??

Yay!! [clapping] Fantastic! You must be so proud of yourself. What a great job you have done. All down to you and your hard work and perseverance! Callum is luck to have a Mummy like you, he's in the best hands possible.
So pleased for you.

Looking forward to your report back

AngeGabriel · 03/12/2007 10:19

Good luck for SCBU nurse visit.

sparklygothkat · 03/12/2007 11:31

mmmmmmmm She just phoned and is coming round in a hour. When I said that we hadn't given the formula but he had gain 9oz in a week, she laughed. I said 'thats good' and she just went 'mmm well yea!'

OP posts:
AngeGabriel · 03/12/2007 11:38

Hope it goes well. Don't let her get you down...9oz is great

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 03/12/2007 11:39

good luck sgk - he is doing great, you are doing great and the scbu nurse's only job is to admire you I hope!

maisiemog · 03/12/2007 11:58

She sounds like an insensitive cow! I would hate if somebody laughed like that, what is that supposed to signify?? Is there something funny about gaining 9oz? and 'Mm well yeah' ???!!!! What!!!
I hope she signs you off and stays away. It's a shame she couldn't have offered more support for your breastfeeding, rather then threats! Obviously YOUR plan has worked beautifully with no help at all from her!!!
Grr!
Set Callum on her!

sparklygothkat · 03/12/2007 12:01

i think what ever we do will not good enough

OP posts:
maisiemog · 03/12/2007 12:03

I think whatever SHE does will not be good enough! Kick her in the leg!
Or perhaps you could laugh and say 'Mm well yeah' to whatever she says to you.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 03/12/2007 12:18

it may not be good enough for her BUT it is good enough for callum - and it's him you have the responsibility to NOT madam from scbu! You are a lovely mother, you took good care of him before he was born and you are doing the same now! Anyone who makes you feel even slightly down about this should be shown the door!

jellies · 03/12/2007 13:09

Hi, lots of advice here, hope its not stressing you further having all these opinions,.. Have they tried breast milk fortifier? it is formula based but can be added to your milk? As long as baby is gaining weight it shouldn't matter too much how much that is? also just make sure weight is being plotted on a breast feeding growth chart and NOT a standard one breast fed babies gain weight differently!

sparklygothkat · 03/12/2007 13:33

OMG!!!!!!! she has just left, and she said that he has done fabulously!!! I even told her how crap she and the consultant made me feel about breastfeeding, and she apologied lots!!!

SantaBeClausImWorthIt · 03/12/2007 13:35

Great! Now can you let yourself relax a bit?! You're doing brilliantly.

SevenSwansASlouching · 03/12/2007 13:35

This is GREAT sparkly. Am thrilled for you.

Did you manage to resist saying "so put that in your pipe and smoke it!"

Misdee · 03/12/2007 13:37

have you left the tube in for now?

and isnt it about time we had a big fatty picture of callum put up on your profile?

sparklygothkat · 03/12/2007 13:40

tube is still in, as the scbu nurse is concerned about removing it, becuase we don't know exactly how much he is taking via the breast, he is getting huge amounts down the tube, but it can't stay in forever.

cant believe i was brave enough to confront her..!!

rebelmum1 · 03/12/2007 14:07

I would agree with getting support from a BF org or contact NCT, or other professionals to find out the real and immediate risks by continuing. Be as informed as you can be. There's a radical midwife org and also Aims are quite good for information www.aims.org.uk

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 03/12/2007 15:36

Well done SGK! Great result!

Miaou · 03/12/2007 16:14

Oh, well done you for telling her she was making you feel crap about b/fing!! So glad Callum is doing well

sparklygothkat · 03/12/2007 17:33

lol, HV phoned me and she is pleased with he result of today's visit.

Something did shock me though, you know how much the SCBU was pushing formula?? She actually breastfed all her kids!!! You think she would be more pro-breastfeeding, wouldn;t you?? I think its because they can't guage just how much he is taking when breastfeeding.
