themoon66 · 02/11/2007 13:21

I remember my GP saying the same when I was breastfeeding DD.... but that was 21 years ago, so forgivable now.

stleger · 02/11/2007 13:21

Or a glass of milk!

tiktok · 02/11/2007 13:24

Oh dear. Please, please let him know the reverse is true - that women who bf have less risk of osteoporosis than women who do not

This is just one study with refs for this

ja9 · 02/11/2007 18:08

moondog · 02/11/2007 20:03

Why s o onion?? (Fucking nutter(

Tommy · 02/11/2007 20:08

also interested to know why breastfeeding is selfish?

Also think your GP is a tt for saying that. Why, oh why do people who don't know things advise people on them?!

weeonion · 02/11/2007 20:10

i was having big probs - an abcess well underway as noone would help me ( was on holiday) the doc said i was selfish to bf as babies only bonded with their mums, dads couldnt feed and that in his opinion - it was meeting a mothers needs more than a babies. a nurse in the same place said that bf actually make her feel sick.
helpful. positive and encouraging lot

Miaou · 02/11/2007 20:12

what an idiot

When I told my gp I was planning on feeding ds2 until he was at least a year old, he said "there's no upper limit you know, you can keep on breastfeeding until you're both ready to stop"

(and he also checked that I was planning to introduce weaning at 6 months and not before)

I could have hugged him

I hear so many bad stories like this that when I asked my GP if the tablets he was giving me were ok with bf, I was expecting some stupid comment but he said 'it's really good that you're still bf'. I was really pleased!

bubblepop · 02/11/2007 20:56

how wierd!

chipmonkey · 02/11/2007 21:09

Miaou! That is an exceptionally good GP!

Mungarra · 02/11/2007 21:17

I knew someone, who told her GP that she was breastfeeding and he said 'you won't have to worry about contraception then'. She told him that she knew two women with 2nd children because they used breastfeeding as contraception.

sweetkitty · 02/11/2007 21:26

My midwife told me that bfing past 6 months was only for the mothers benefit, WTF???

bookthief · 02/11/2007 21:32

Snap Mungarra. When I went to see the practice nurse for the contraception chat she very breezily said that exclusive bf was an excellent contraceptive...

I know that in theory and statistically that is true, but I've heard too many stories of it not being quite that simple!

cazboldy · 02/11/2007 21:42

My doctor said that you need to feed at least 6 times a day and definitely no more than 4 hours apart for it to work! I got pg while bf! twice

llareggub · 02/11/2007 21:45

I had words with my best friend's new boyfriend at the weekend. He watched me feed my 1 year old son with pure disgust and then uttered: "bitty is it?"

Needless to say I gave him a bit of grief.

It was not a good first meeting of BF new boyfriend.

hunkermunker · 02/11/2007 21:50

I'm sometimes amazed anyone breastfeeds, really.
