when i said i fed ds until 20mo and was hoping to do similar with dd,

Brilliant!

Jenkey that is appalling.
Why feed 'secretly' though?
By doing this we perpetuate the myth that it is shameful. We need to each play a part in re-educating the tribe of cock monkeys out there.

One of my friends has a child with CP. She told me that she had decided that he could feed as long as he wanted to 'and I don't care if he doesn't stop until he is seven'.

She is a wonderful mother.

I know Moondog - I have never held back from feeding publicly till this point but I will see how brave I feel about it at the time. Mind you it is fairly obvious that I'm passionate about breastfeeding - my car is covered in breastfeeding bumper stickers and even my pushchair has some too. I think perhaps I'll order dd a new special t-shirt from lactivist just to wear when we go to the conductive education centre!

moondog · 04/11/2007 18:46

OOhb yes.
You go girl.
Annoyingly I never came across cock monkeys in years of breastfeeding. Everyone has been great. No chance to ever argue or do anything 'lactivist'

sorry, computer being weird, just posted my earlier message again.

Same here moondog - but then I am totally unapologetic and determinedly 'indiscreet' (gaaargh) about it. I suspect that any anti-bfing bully who spots me clocks my attitude quite quickly and realises that they'd only get a hard time if they approached me - whereas with women who do feel vulnerable and are trying to bf without anyone noticing, or who feel unsure about whether their choice to continue feeding has been the right one, are more likely to be picked on, I suspect.

moondog · 04/11/2007 20:52

You're right Policy.
Bullies sense vulnerability.
That's why they didn't approach me as my response would have been to whip out my Uzi and mow 'em down.

My Mum always brings great big glasses of milk to me if I'm bf. I have pointed out to her that the cows themselves seem to manage milk production just fine on a diet of grass only but she never listens.

mylittleponey · 05/11/2007 20:47

ja9 - what a load of rubbish you were told - well done for bf.

Jenkeywoo · 05/11/2007 21:13

Ok, so I've ordered dd a t-shirt saying "Happy breastfed toddler" for her to wear with pride when we go to the centre...Can't wait for the reaction. But the slogan says it all - breastfeeding does not do DD more harm than good, it makes her happy.

specialmagiclady · 05/11/2007 21:23

Interesting about the calcium thing being bollox. I have been really really craving yogurt and cheese since BFing DS2. Maybe that I just need calories generically, though and I know I can get them there...

tcmummy · 06/11/2007 20:45

I was told by one doc to stop feeding because I had mastitis and my milk was infected and another doc gave me antibiotics to treat nipple thrush . Loons. Maybe you could pop round to my surgery moondog and policy ...

agnesnitt · 06/11/2007 21:02

specialmagiclady I'm eating yoghurts like they're about to be banned as I have been advised to up my calorie intake by my HV. We're attempting to convince my 13 week old that feeding on the hour every hour isn't healthy for either of us. So yoghurts and cheese are atop my list of calorie rich foods with which I hope my milk will become somewhat richer.

Hopefully.

Please.

when my dd chipped her tooth - my dentist advised "I lay off the breastfeeding for a while"!! You would think that educated people would know how it works!

tiktok · 07/11/2007 00:06

agnesnitt - your HV told you that?

I am sorry, and I hope you find your issues with bf are resolved, but her information is so totally and preposterously wrong, I would seriously suggest you get another HV or at least avoid this one for anything to do with infant feeding.

The 'richness' of breastmilk ie the amount fat in it is completely unrelated to the mother's diet.....and anyone caring for bf mothers should know this. Your intake of calories (unless you are ill with starvation) will be quite enough to make perfectly fine breastmilk.

Fat content of breastmilk differs according to the degree of emptiness of the breast:
