Smoking and Breastfeeding, I need some ammo

A friend of mine smokes three cigarettes a day and claims that this does not harm her DD, who is bf. She is reluctant to give up because it feels like "the last bastion" of adult things she gets to do for herself (DD is napping, she gets a fag), and she says that spaces them so she doesn't smoke within an hour of bf. I don't know the health ramifications of this, so I can't say either way to her, though it seems to me that it can't be a good thing.

Anyone know the effects on a baby of smoking? Would they be the same for someone smoking so few a day? I want to go to her with hard facts before I utter a word, because really, to each their own.

Ah well, you did get the information in the end, I hope

and hopefully found that people were not keen to judge your smoking and that we support you doing the best you can, and breastfeeding, and all that

sorry you felt you couldn't post honestly in the first place and I do see where you are coming from

well I am sorry to hear you feel that way Fio

I have explained that breastfeeding is a good thing to do whether you are a smoker or not, that it can be dangerous to co-sleep if you smoke, and that I think it is a mistake to try to attack people for their feeding choices

which bit offended you?

morocco · 25/10/2007 22:38

surely a mn classics thread???

orangehead · 25/10/2007 22:51

I dont know about the effects of smoking on bf, but when I was bf I had a blue wicked and expressed a couple of hours later I was horrified that my milk was blue. I think any substance you take in will go into your breastmilk

beautifuldays · 25/10/2007 22:54

seriously?

Snaf · 25/10/2007 22:55

A blue wicked? Que?

beautifuldays · 25/10/2007 22:57

i think it's an alchopop thingy, but really? blue milk?

orangehead · 25/10/2007 23:01

yes no joke.

tori32 · 25/10/2007 23:03

RoRoMummy thank god you are not my friend is all I can say. How self righteous and preachy you sound. 3 cigs per day is next to nothing. There may be a miniscule amount of chemicals that pass into breast milk. However, having watched a programme on the amount of chemicals that pass from cosmetics to breast milk, I choose 3 cigs every time. I would love to know if you have evr smoked BTW.

How would you feel if she warned you about the dangers of makeup, hair products and deoderants?

Snaf · 25/10/2007 23:04

Er... you might want toread the whole thread, tori.

tiktok · 25/10/2007 23:05

Er, tori.....have you read anything but the OP? Please do....and see how it has moved on somewhat!

orangehead · 25/10/2007 23:14

Roromummy I can understand why you lied, I think alot of others would do the same if it was a subject they felt bad about.

tori32 · 25/10/2007 23:16

Sorry had only read the op before and x posted as I have finally caught up. Apologies but indirectly I am on her side with the smoking. Only got hacked off ather supposed interference with the 'friend'!

Mojomummy · 28/10/2007 23:34

why is everyone so horrible ?

I've more or less given up posting on threads these days because the comments people make are just awful.

Seems like everyone likes to insist that people do what they think.

RoRomummy, don't smoke - my friends mum died of lung cancer (ooh & some people live to 100 & smoked since they were 2) you know it's bad news.

Yes, FWIW I warn my DH/Mum/Best friend not to use chemicals from washing powders, skin cream, deoderants etc - because I CARE about them. Other friends I just throw in the odd comment & they can make their own decisions.

Good night.
