SMA Alfamino grainy HELP!

Formula1991 · 01/08/2019 17:15

Hi! Has anyone been prescribed SMA Alfamino for their little ones CMPA allergy?

My DS has been on it for a week and no matter what I can not get it to mix proper. Done exactly what it says on the tin, tried a other things but just still little grains all over the bottle no matter what.

DS is drinking most of his bottles. Little fussy...but his symptoms have been better on this than the 5 others we’ve been on.

So any ideas on how to get rid of the grains would be much appreciated!

Hi, slightly off track but my little one has been struggling with his feeding and being in almost constant discomfort with some feeds and screaming when going toilet so was wandering what symptoms your little one had as I have been doctors but they didn’t really want to discuss the potential of any allergies they just advised to change brand of milk so anything you could share would be so helpful x

Formula1991 · 02/08/2019 17:16

Hey Jelly no problem! Your poor little one. It’s horrible when you just don’t know how to help them.

My son was exactly the same. Always in discomfort bringing his knees up, he had explosive nappies and wind which smelled just no words for how bad, and constantly sicking up.

He also had really bad eczema and cradle cap which was caused by it, I know some babies don’t get that.

To be fair they probably wont, his doctor made me try lactose free milk first even though its so rare in babies, anything so they don't have to pay the £30-£40 for baby formula.

It can be a number of different symptoms but definitely the main ones are the pain and bad nappies.

Just go with your instinct, you know when your baby isn’t happy. It took me a while to realise it but we’d still be on normal aptamil formula if I didn’t go with my gut instinct.

If you need anymore info or want to talk just let me know lovely Smile x

Hi I know it’s been a while since you posted but I have just started akfamino and it’s so grainy! Did you find a solution? Xx

Formula1991 · 11/10/2019 13:53

Hi Jess, not at all. I rang the dietician, and the health visitor and both said they had never heard of it going grainy. Hmm.

I tried making it every way possible, but nothing made a difference. And ended up making my son really constipated.

So went back to Similac Alimentium and touch wood my son has been ok since, especially now he is weaning.

Fingers crossed you get it sorted, if your not happy with the formula I would ask to try another. I certainly recommend Similac if you haven’t tried it already.

Hi Jess, how are you getting on with Sma Alfamino? Did it make any difference? Is your baby better?
My daughter has been prescribed with it (before she was on similac) and I can see a regression. What are your findings? X

Jess7cw · 22/10/2019 19:31

11 days in and we have really bad wind and reflux is much worse. Spoke to dietitian who said to wait it out a couple weeks at least so that is what we are doing but he’s definitely not right. We have used similar before but he still reacted, we switched to Puramino and I thought he was worse but definitely better on that than this SMA but was told not to switch back

Matthew23 · 22/10/2019 21:35

We are 6 days in and have exactly the same problem. Extremely bad wind and reflux is much worse. Which I don’t understand as I was told by the specialist that this formula is the best, the easiest to digest?! I’m going to call him tomorrow as it’s not right at all

Jess7cw · 23/10/2019 08:16

Exactly what we were told. Please post again if you speak with the specialist. I’m really hoping it’s just getting used to the new formula as it will settle down

Matthew23 · 23/10/2019 16:38

I didn’t call the professor today as I thought my daughter was a little bit better. I’ll see how the night goes (as I didn’t sleep two previous nights) and if it’s still so bad I’ll call him tomorrow morning.
How old is your little one?
My one will be 16 weeks this Monday and we will start weaning her under control of dietician.
I’ll stay in touch .

Matthew23 · 23/10/2019 16:58

Is your little one on any medication? My one was on ranitidine and now they’ve changed it to omeprazole, but I’m not sure if it’s better .

Jess7cw · 23/10/2019 17:35

My son was 12 weeks on Monday, he has also just had his ranitidine changed to omeprazole today, I haven’t started it yet I’m a bit nervous. We have been advised to start weaning in a months time. Thank you, I will post an update too

Matthew23 · 24/10/2019 19:10

Hello, I’m getting a bit mad in here. Last night was better, but during the day reflux got worse again. Tomorrow I’m seeing dietician so I’m hoping to get some more info.
How is your son? It’s 13th day on that formula, any improvement? What dose of omeprazole are you giving him?
I was told to give 5ml every morning.
BTW, I’m not Matthew, I’m Joanna (not sure what I’ve done)

Jess7cw · 24/10/2019 20:08

Hi Joanna. Don’t worry you’re not the only one feeling a bit mad over all of this. Mason seems to be settling down. He gulps a lot of air down with his bottle though so struggling with trapped wind still. That’s the same dose I’ve been told to give but I’ve heard a lot about the acid battle that can happen from switching for a week or two so I’m yet to actually start it. So he’s had nothing since I gave Ranitidine at 7am and seems to be ok, I’m holding off the omeprazole and going to see if he sleeps well without it. Hope your appointment goes well

Matthew23 · 26/10/2019 20:41

Hi Jess, the appointment went quite well. We will start weaning in a week time when Sophia will be 17 weeks. We’ve got exact plan what and when to give her, I’m very excited about that.
It looks like Sophia is setting down 🤞 every day is better. Although she is still arching so I’ll talk to her doctor and might go back to ranitidine. She is still suffering with a lot of gas, which causes problems in the night, the dietician thinks a lot of that is down to the fact that she drinks her bottle extremely quickly .
How Mason is doing? Have you started giving him omeprazole? Or you’ve decided not to give him any medicine?

Jess7cw · 26/10/2019 21:31

Hi, I’m so glad to hear your appointment went well and Sophia is settling. That’s such good news. Mason has definitely settled a lot more with this formula but his jabs yesterday have thrown him off and he’s not drinking much right now. We have decided to hold off the omeprazole for for as long as we can, if we can get ranitidine again I will probably do that. But have been told we might not get it for weeks. He definitely still gulps but we’ve added a bit more carobel to try and slow the flow down more and it helps , still got some trapped wind though I think it’s just something we’ll be dealing with for a while. What have you tried to tackle the gulping?

Good luck weaning, I can’t wait to start with mason I hope it goes well! I am going to a weaning group soon for other babies and mums in our situation, I will pass on as much info as I can to you

Matthew23 · 28/10/2019 14:42

Weaning group?! Sounds interesting! Yes please, pass on as much info as you can.

I use carobel as well and started to make the milk quite thick which made a massive difference!!! Yesterday, first time in 8 weeks Sophia woke up only one time in the night with a burp?! It was amazing! And I hope it’s not one off.
Following dietician advise I’m giving her only five bottles, every 3,5 - 4 hours.
Unfortunately since yesterday she’s got diarrhoea, I’ve emailed the dietician already and waiting for her advise.

I hate the jabs!! Both times it messed up our routine. Sophia would take after it just half the amount of her normal daily intake.

Matthew23 · 28/10/2019 20:20

Does it mean that Mason doesn’t take any medication and he is fine???

Jess7cw · 28/10/2019 21:31

Aw I’m so please and happy for you that Sophia slept so well! It makes such a difference when you can finally get some decent sleep! Mason had had watery nappies ever since we started Alfamino but dietician said it’s normal for that to happen with amino acid formulas. So I’m not worried and he seems fine. Yes mason has been off all medication for 3 days now and so far so good, I’m wondering whether his reflux was all caused from his CMPA and perhaps hadn’t needed the medication for s while. Saying that I was never good at giving it him at strict times oops. Is Sophia CMPA also?

Jess7cw · 28/10/2019 21:33

If you are on Facebook there are two great groups I am part of that I find extremely helpful if you are not already part of them. Babies with reflux & Silent reflux and the other is Main group - CMPA support

Matthew23 · 30/10/2019 14:32

Wow! That’s amazing! Such a good news!!! Hopefully he will be much better now 👍🏻
I’ve tried not to give Sophia medication but she is arching a lot, so unfortunately I’ve to go back to it.
Can you explain to me what is the gas battle with the omeprazole?
And what are your little one poos like?
Sophia has got very watery poo and considering she sometimes poos three times per day, her bum gets sore?

Thank you for the Facebook groups. I’ve joined them already. So much useful info you can find over there!

Jess7cw · 30/10/2019 15:23

Some babies can have an acid battle when starting PPI’s whilst their bodies stop producing the acid but sound like Sophia is doing really well. Mason’s poos are watery and range from green to like korma yellow colour, according to the dietician and other parents using amino acid formulas it’s normal. I was so worried to start with. We use Aveeno Baby barrier cream and it works so well for us so far so good had no nappy rashes. Mason goes once sometimes twice a day. Yeah the Facebook pages have saved my sanity a few times!

Matthew23 · 31/10/2019 13:31

There is definitely regression today, Sophia is more uncomfortable, a little bit more gas and spitting out. Should I consider it as the gas battle then?
Gosh! I hope I don’t sound silly now!

Jess7cw · 31/10/2019 20:21

Noo you don’t sound silly. I would say so it does sound like it. We have had a really bad day today too, lots more sick and gas and crying and naps haven’t lasted any longer than 15/20 minutes. My other half is trying to settle him to sleep now, think we are in for a long night. If we start having more regular bad days like this I will start his omeprazole, I was hoping we wouldn’t have to do that

Matthew23 · 01/11/2019 13:15

Oh no... I was so happy to hear that Mason is doing so well without any medication.
I had a very bad night too. She was constantly waking up 😞 I wish I’ve never stopped giving her the medicine 😤

Matthew23 · 03/11/2019 11:24

Hello, how are you getting on? Did you manage to stay off the medicine? How’s Mason feeling?
