Is there a problem with Aptimil?

Hi - my husband seems to think he heard something on the radio yesterday and feels they might have been saying there is a problem with aptimil for some babies and it makes them ill etc. Typically this is all he got but did anyone else hear this or know anything about it? Many thanks.

Dont know anything about it but ds has never had a problem with aptamil.

My ds had awful stomach cramps etc when he had it .... but I dont think that was Aptamil's fault .. just didnt agree with him .. he then went on to Omneo Comfort and was fine!

my sister who is a midwife advised me that they did a study on this at college and that aptimil is the best as it is the closest to breast milk (apparently contains immunofortis), so this is the one i was gonna buy. hadnt heard anything bad abotu it though.

No probs our end with Aptamil - DS thrived on it and so did my friends two DD's

DS finds this the best (SMA gave him wind and really lumpy poo).

I think it is personal to the baby

Aptamil was recommended to us during anti natal classes as the best formula. I did mixed feeding with my DD and had no problems with it, she still has the follow on milk now.

We tried DS3 on Aptimil as I heard that it caused less wind (he was on SMA) he had it for 1 1/2 days and we switched back - he was really miserable and not at all himself - as soon as we switched back he was fine - definitely dependson the baby I think

I don't think any formula can be described as 'closest to breastmilk' tbh, they are all the same

I used aptamil when mine moved onto bottles as it was the free sample given out in hospital [captive audience]

That is not true Milkmummy and am frankly surprised that your mw sister is passing on such info.

They ae all much of a muchness.
Oh,and half of what they claim to be able to do is not only untrue but also illegal.They should be done by Trading Standards.

They aren't the same though - my ds couldn't get on with sma but aptamil is fine - fannyannie had the reverse.

It shows they must be different to some extent.

Oh,they differ undoubtedly.What I mean is that none is significantly nutritionall better than another.No doubt some babies tolerate one more easily than another.

I used aptimil for ds2 2 years ago. When we started using it it was fine but the recipe was changed a few months later. I was mixed feeding so we carried on with it (only 1 feed a day) but I could tell the difference between the older recipe (usually in cartons) and the newer version. IIRC the manufacturers had added extra fibre to it which keeps the baby's stools softer (and closer to that of a bf baby). My nephew was fed aptimil for a while too but my SIL gave up with it as he had reflux and it made it worse.

'Immunofortis' is just a made-up word which Aptamil use to imply that their formula contains something which strengthens the immune system. A claim which obviously has no basis in fact.

oh I'm sure DS2 did more than "tolerate" SMA - he positively thrived on it.......and DS3 doesn't seem to be doing badly either with a mix of SMA and breast......

I cannot believe that a specific brand of formula was recommended during ante natal classes - the advice is not only wrong (there is no 'best') but completely against NHS guidelines. Midwives are not allowed to recommend specific brands.

there is a thread somewhere by hunker sent via someone else with all the info about illegal marketing ie immunofortis and closest to bm etc etc. hunker wants it sending to every mp.

Well teafortwo. They did recommend it, they even had the little ready mixed cartons to show us. Obviously they were encouraging everyone to BF. Would not suprise me if they were breaking NHS guidelines, crap hospital, classes and teacher.

Immunofortis is a made-up word, like Total petrol containing "excellium".

If Aptimil made tights, they'd say they had "stay-uppium" in them.

If Aptimil made teabags, they'd say "looseleafium" on them.

If Aptimil made condoms, they'd say "nobabiesresultingifyoucuminthem" on them.
