I think a distorted picture may be being painted

I was once given a £1 and a cornish pasty "for me" by the Salvation Army as i sat in a shop doorway surrounded by bags (had been shopping). Aside from this-no.

None here and I was just DYING for someone to have a go when I was having a bad day so I could give them a bollocking.
Oh well, had to shout at DH instead

foxcub · 23/06/2007 19:21

I've had lots of lovely comments here in west London - people coming up to me to be supportive. This has included our local priest when I BF in church and he made a point of coming over to me afterwards and said it was great to see a Mum Bfing to give their baby the best start

The only negative was once when what was clearly a perverted old git positioned himself opposite me to try and get a glimpse of my tit! - so I asked someone to sit in the way to block his view

Lio · 23/06/2007 19:24

me

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 23/06/2007 19:31

Never, and I faffed like anything to latch them on.

I had a supportive smile from someone in M&S cafe once.

KristinaM · 23/06/2007 19:37

none here in Scotland

rnbsmum · 23/06/2007 20:48

Have only had really supportive reactions.

berolina · 23/06/2007 20:51

SSSandy - definitely less so than in the UK, but OTOH - have a look at the comments on this (in German)

I don't think I've ever had a horrible comment. Other than MIL, who was cleary sceptical until she read in her Hello! magazine that Kate Winslett was BFing. 'so it must be alright', she commented, clearly relieved

PinkTulips · 24/06/2007 13:22

not once, although i was a bag of nerves and hardly ever fed dd in public but with ds he gets fed when and wherever we happen to be and i've had lots of smiles and positive comments but never anything bad.

pity really as i'm much more confidant now and would love to give out to anyone whpo tried

grouchyoscar · 24/06/2007 13:28

None at all...MIL and SIL seemed a tad negative about it but they never entertained the idea of it themselves.

When we went to register DS's birth, he needed a feed. The Registrar was concerned that a couple of Muslim blokes may find it 'disturbing' but DS was under my shirt slurping away throughout the entire process of the paperwork. She even commented on how nice it was to see a mum bfing

SSSandy2 · 25/06/2007 09:40

Hi there Berolina! How is the pregnancy going? Alles ok?

I was a bit at those comments on the article. Honestly I hadn't realised anyone here considered it disgusting if a baby was breastfed whilst they were eating cake and drinking coffee at the next table! I did it everywhere I happened to be: at the hairdressers getting my hair cut; on the bus; in the library; whenever the need arose. Mind you I only did in 3 months so if I'd stuck it out longer, I'd no doubt have been revolting people all over Berlin with it. Geez...

Yurtgirl · 25/06/2007 09:43

No negative comments for me either - although people starring did really get on my nerves!

warthog · 25/06/2007 12:28

no comments, no stares, the occasional encouraging smile though.

NoNickname · 25/06/2007 12:50

I have never had any negative comments and I have bf ds in all sorts of places (shops, shopping centres, parks, restaurants, doctor's surgery, bus stops, car parks, on a ferry, on trains, at a wedding, during a cookery demonstration by Anthony Worrall-Thompson at the Ideal Home Show...)

And I bf in public until he was about 2. I had some stares when he was older, but still no-one has ever actually said anything.

Zazette · 25/06/2007 12:58

nope, no problems. And I was in a busy cafe this morning when a woman came in with a desperately screeching baby, sat down and plugged him in - absolutely everyone there beamed and clucked.

specialmagiclady · 25/06/2007 13:49

Never. And even my elderly FIL - who is very embarassed by the whole thing - just says "isn't she discreet?" constantly.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 25/06/2007 13:55

NoNickname - I breastfeed anywhere but I'm not sure I would want to do it in front of Antony Worral-Thompson

Tutter · 25/06/2007 13:58

me

9 months bfing ds1

jujujbel · 25/06/2007 14:00

Never - 2 babies - DD1 for a year and DD2 still going at 10 months

uberalice · 25/06/2007 14:02

Me. Mind you I'm in Scotland and feel quite protected by the law. I've BF in England too a few times and didn't get any hassle, but I did feel more self-conscious about it.

Sue372 · 25/06/2007 14:04

Me, never. BF both dc.

specialmagiclady · 25/06/2007 14:06

Isn't it interesting that people say "even in church" about public BFing. I've BFed in church a few times - weddings, christenings etc and I have to say I think it's the BEST place for it. I mean, surely Jesus was breastfed?? Given that he survived infancy, there's no doubt about it. And certainly never had any negative looks/comments etc. Took godparent vows while BFing my tiny DS2 -standing up in front of everyone in VERY smart chapel...

sweetkitty · 25/06/2007 14:06

Never from stangers BF both DDs. Most negativity came from my brother who would leave the room if he saw me BFing. However, most of the time I would do it he would be blissfully unaware. I think he had never come across anyone else BFing and thought I would be sitting with both boobs hanging out.

foxcub · 25/06/2007 16:48

My Mum told me not to BF in front of my Grandad who was 91 - "in case it shocks him" [?]

So of course I BF in front of him

He remarked "I'm glad your feeding him yourself; your Gran breast fed all her babies"

Of course up until 1950's evryone BF anyway!
