IOTC, you haven't explained it well, full stop, I'm sorry, but you just haven't.

Find it strange by all means, but you can see that the majority of us on here don't understand where you're coming from or why you feel this way.

I'm sorry, but that's how it is.

Time to leave it alone really I guess?

(Yes I know I said I was leaving. I really am now. )

I think we should agree to disagree on this one.

X post.

I know you didn't say that - i'm trying to figure out why it's not strange to breast feed when you can give formula but strange to breasfeed when it's cow's milk time.

Can someone please tell me what OMHO means??

IMHO - In my humble opinion

just to add more strangeness to the "strange" arguments,

I find it strange that my NCT grp are trying to stop breastfeeding now their babies are 8 mths when they don't go to work.

No its got nothing to with with bf replacing ff or cows milk. Its to with the age that the child is being bf. I child should hopefully be drinking all its fluid from a cup by 12 months. Some are sooner, some are later. I think it's all part of the devoloping skills of a child, like pureed food until 7 months, then onto lumpy food, then finger food etc. With milk it's like breast/bottle, then beaker then cup. Thats what i mean.

NoNickname · 24/04/2007 22:56

I don't think you're right in that all their liquid should come from a cup. It's just that they should be able to use a cup.

Bfed children learn to use cups for water, juice, etc., just as non-bfed children are.

In fact, I should bfed children are more proficient at using a cup earlier than non-bfed children, because they are rarely (if ever, as in ds's case) given a bottle).

"child should hopefully be drinking all its fluid from a cup by 12 months."
Why though - like i said earlier - the recommended is 2 yrs for all babies worldwide...very confused why you think this or where this idea comes from

Report
amijee · 24/04/2007 22:57

well I was still drinking milk out of a bottle when I went to school [embarrassed]

Did it affect my independence? I left home at 18, paid my way thru med school, paid for my own flat and wedding and now I am the breadwinner! ...so i don't think so!

Well thats what i ment, some agree some don't. Theres no right or wrong because it's opinions.

Report
amijee · 24/04/2007 23:00

No - some of it isn't opinion, it's fact i'm afraid.

Fact - breast fed babies are healthier..the longer they do it the healthier they are

Fact - WHO advised BF until 2 yrs

Fact - Bottle fed babies don't drink out of a cup - they drink out of a bottle

Bottle fed babies don't always drink out of a bottle, they change to a beaker then a cup too. I know this because mines bottle fed and she couldn't be healthier.

I've been wondering something about extended breastfeeding and I hope nobody minds me asking it here as I know this thread has become a bit of a debate on whether it's right/wrong. I haven't had my baby yet, this is all research.

I'm an intensely private person when it comes to my body, and the thought of accidentally flashing my jiggly bits in public makes me very uncomfortable. I'm absolutely pro-breastfeeding but it's going to take me a while to build up the courage (and probably a lot of time experimenting with nursing tops/practising in front of a mirror) to be able to bf in public.

And that's with a fairly motionless newborn. With extended breastfeeding, is there any way to stop your older baby yanking up your top in a crowd, or rooting for nipple when he wants one?

I think (bearing in mind I haven't had him yet, with practice my attitude could change, I don't know) that if that were the case and he couldn't be trusted not to really embarass me, I'd be tempted to give up breastfeeding in public for that reason, and perhaps express and bottlefeed him when we're out.

I know it's a bit of a shit reason, but I'm positively phobic about anyone getting an eyeful, even/especially friends and family.

I've only skimmed through the thread so I may have missed some subtlety or other, but

"Bottle fed babies don't drink out of a cup - they drink out of a bottle"? Why the judgements please? Why is it assumed that bottle-fed babies will be bottle-feeding ad infinitum to the detriment of their development?

You know, it's just possible that there are women out there who bottle feed who care about and bond with their babies just as much as the rest of you. FWIW mine has formula from a bottle, and water from a beaker (you see I'm a BOTTLE feeder who doesn't give sugary juices - wow!). He'll be weaned onto cow's milk at 1 (not a moment too soon) and fully weaned onto a beaker/cup at the same time.

bananabump there's extended bf and extended bf. A lot of extended bfers only nurse a couple of times a day for example, I nurse DS first thing in the morning and last thing at night most days. At weekends if we're at home I'll often nurse him before his nap as well. But it's always at home, or in the house of whichever relative we're staying with, so the pulling up or down of top isn't an issue. He doesn't ask to nurse when we are out and about, he's too busy doing other stuff. In fact, I've hardly nursed in public since he was about 7 months and got very wriggly and distractible -- there was no way I could get him to concentrate on a feed if we were anywhere interesting.

On the other hand there are those who still nurse their toddlers a lot of times in a day, wherever and whenever they happen to be. It's horses for courses, really.

By the way, when it came down to it I was far more worried about flashing my jiggly post-baby belly at people when breastfeeding than at accidentally giving them a flash of breast (odd how priorities change).

Banana- good luck with your lovely-one-to-be. I hated the idea of flashing the boobs to all and sundry, still not mad about it. DS 10 months old (nearly). Today he undid my vest clip and moved the fabric out of the way before stuffing his face. He doesn't discriminate between public/ private. It can be highly embarrassing but ATEOTD, sod it. Breast is best for him. WHen uncomfortable in the gaze/ glare of others, I focus on the shape of his lovely round head, how happy and content he is, and get through it. I hope it works out for you, too.
