here's the logo

you tube clip here

sma site

way to get round the new advertising rules, which forbid them from saying "close to breastmilk" &c
anyone like to complain? I would like them, very much, to have to change their logo and slogan again. especially as they have clearly spent quite a bit of wonga on it.

Yes, - just realised that after posting zippi! I don't think it is a particularly great logo regardless!

WelshBoris · 15/04/2007 20:12

Who said breastfeeding is the only way?

Who? Where?

Yes it is hard, and thank the Lord we have people like mears, tiktok and HunkerBaby to offer fan-fecking-tastic support to mums who are struggling with bf.

Why do I let these threads get under my skin?

Oh, God, do you really think that I'm interested in making other women feel like shit?

FFS!

3andnomore · 15/04/2007 20:13

Frascati, I think the point is, that the marketing is, sadly, pretty unethical...and wihtout it we would probably not have such a high rate od mothers not succeeding with bf...because bf would be the norm...!
Those companies only care about money...and that is that....it's lil logos liek this and the bigger acts of serious unethical behaviour, like the things Nestle did/does in 3. World countrys which has killed so many Babys.SO, I must agree with Hunker, Formula companies are evil....

zippitippitoes · 15/04/2007 20:13

it's only because of marketing that there is any point in formula undergoing r&d...would you prefer that not to be done?

WelshBoris · 15/04/2007 20:14

If you feel guilty for formula feeding, thats your look out.

If you dont why do you let these threads bother you? Why do you come on here shouting the odds?

If youre happy with your choices as a parent then these threads about breastfeeding, formula companies and the like should affect you

Frascati · 15/04/2007 20:15

No what really really annoys me is that it seems only certain opinions count.

hunkermunker · 15/04/2007 20:16

Oh, FFS!

You misrepresented what I said totally. Can you not see that?!

You don't even know what you're objecting to, it would seem!

3andnomore · 15/04/2007 20:16

of courdse research is important, and of course it's great that they have develloped formula so well....but fact is still that Formula companies do try to undermine breastfeeding where possible..

ssd · 15/04/2007 20:17

WB, who's shouting the odds?

SoupDragon · 15/04/2007 20:17

Danae, I disagree that that logo will make a mother anywhere think the milk is better than/as good as breasfeeding. The implications of the slogans, advertising text etc etc that go with it yes and this is what needs to be watched closely to avoid "closer to breastmilk" claims etc. The logo will just make them choose one brand over another having been persuaded by "science" that formula is better/the same/near as dammit.

Now, if the logo was a large pair of breasts made into an M then maybe. The subliminal implication would be that the milk is breast milk in a can. This? No. I think you all getting het up about nothing.

zippitippitoes · 15/04/2007 20:18

yhe basic premise of this discussion is that the sma logo looks like a woman breastfeeding if it doesn't then as far as this point goes there is no argument...not everyone does think that is what it looks like

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 20:18

I am happy with the choices I made. However, at the time I had to make the choices I was pretty vunerable - as many women are at that time - with little information or support at hand. I didn't know about MN at the time or know that breast feeding councellors even existed. My HV and GP was rubbish.

If I had had to read all this at such a time, or just after, then yes it would definitely have contributed to me feeling much worse about everything.

I would hate someone else to be made tof eel that way.

I think people have to start to realise that breast feeding is not always the right option for mother and baby in all situations. So, alternatives are necessary - and mothers need to know their options regarding formula, and formula needs to exist and be accessible, as does the information about each type.

hunkermunker · 15/04/2007 20:19

But the information is sketchy and provided by the formula manufacturers (and they make wild and unsubstantiated claims about it).

I'd like to see decent information from impartial research into formula.

Frascati · 15/04/2007 20:19

Here here Hulababy.

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 20:19

To me the M part of the logo are actually arms, not breats. One arm (part of the M) is draped down cradling the child.

hunkermunker · 15/04/2007 20:20

Hulababy, do you think that posts about shady marketing practices by formula companies shouldn't be made because they might make someone feel guilty?

SoupDragon · 15/04/2007 20:20

No one on this thread has said that formula is evil or anythign derogatory about mothers who bottlefeed. It's just about the often dodgy marketing practices of the formula manufacturers. No one's said that breasfeeding is the only way either. This isn't about breast v bottle it's about advertsing methods.

hunkermunker · 15/04/2007 20:21

Thanks, SD.

Frascati, I'm waiting for an apology.

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 20:21

The information will remain sketchy and impartial whilst there is so much opposition put up against FF.

When I was pregnant my paretntcraft classes would not even discuss the option of FF and what the alternatives were. This was a standard hospital parentcraft class, not a breast feeding class. If they won't discuss it with you, then of course the information will remain impartial. It has to come from somewhere!

hunkermunker · 15/04/2007 20:23

I emailed Which to ask them to do a controlled study of formula, Hulababy, precisely because I want women to have access to decent, unbiased information.

Frascati · 15/04/2007 20:23

Well you will be waiting for a long time

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 20:23

hm - no I am not saying that. But I do think that on MN (and other sites) there is so much "we breastfeeders are right and did best for our baby, and this is the only way forward, and FF is wrong and bad..." type things - not saying who or even this thread; but it does exist on MN, definitely! And such negative comments can dig away at people yes.

And heaven forbid people might say that actually FF worked for them and their child has thrived and done well on it.

Hulababy · 15/04/2007 20:25

hunkermunker - the idea of a Which report would be a step forward. As would allowing NHS parentcraft classes and HV discuss all the options for feeding in a more open way.
