Well done you!

If you want to try latching him on again, hold him skin-to-skin for a while first. Don't try when he is starving hungry. When you think he is near feeding, gently take his clothes off and leabve his nappy on. Cradle him next to your breast. As he wakens he will try to 'root', looking for something to suck. He may well latch himself on. Well done with the expressing. If you want to be able to keep giving EBM then express every 3 hours at least to trigger milk production. The pressure of milk you have in your breasts justy now will actually tell your body to stop making more over the next few days. That is how you stop producing milk.

Well done again

"The pressure of milk you have in your breasts justy now will actually tell your body to stop making more over the next few days."

i don't understand that bit, mears.....

Do i need to pump more to get increase pressure or less to increase pressure?

OP posts:

What I mean is that the pressure of milk in the breasts if it is not removed will stop production - so expressing 2-3 hourly is a good thing to do. Sorry for confusion.

Had not read all the thread before i posted and I see you have already been advised to express. I was worried you were planning only to do it once a day.

mears · 20/01/2007 14:54

Should add that it is not only the pressure that reduces production. There is a substance in the milk called Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation (FIL). If milk is not expressed from the breasts, the amount of FIL increases as the amount of stagnant milk in the breast increases. This tells the body to stop producing more milk.

Probably TMI - the bottom line is express often and keep the milk flowing .

LadyTophamHatt · 20/01/2007 15:18

aha....right ok.

i'll make a big extra effort to express more....i don';tthink i was doing it often enough.

Has anyone suggested spending skin-to-skin time with DS4 when your'e not feeding or expressing? It's often suggested for increasing supplywhen bf-ing. Just curl up with him in bed with him and leave DH to get on with DSs 1 2 & 3.

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 16:19

Hope you're hanging in there, LTH.

Well done to you!

tortoiseSHELL · 20/01/2007 16:36

I haven't read the whole thread, sorry, but if you want to try latching him on, I've read that if you feed him in the bath that is a really good place - my mw talked about 'rebirthing' and letting him crawl up to the nipple and latch on, I think the theory is the water makes it like a 'rebirth' experience, and you also get lots of skin to skin, and no clothes to get in the way! And the warm water helps the milk flow too.

Sounds like you're doing brilliantly - well done!

LadyTophamHatt · 20/01/2007 17:43

Just been out and bought an electric/battery pump.

will report back later with results.

OP posts:
LadyTophamHatt · 20/01/2007 18:45

Woooooo....electric is the way to go.

It's much better than the hand pump, still hurts but its easier to ignore it isf i'm not manually pumping.

Way-Hey!!

Ok, so how long should I do on eack boob?

10 mins? 20mins??

i have no idea....

OP posts:
LadyTophamHatt · 20/01/2007 18:49

bloody hell, i've got more out in the last 4 minutes with the electric thab i did on both boobs with the manual

OP posts:
moondog · 20/01/2007 18:50

Electric ones are great.
I got nowhere with a manual.
You go girl!!!

LadyTophamHatt · 20/01/2007 18:52

MD, how long should i do each boob for??

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 20/01/2007 18:52

LOL! Can you fix it to the desk so you can mumsnet with both hands whilst expressing?

SoupDragon · 20/01/2007 18:53

You do one side until it really stops flowing and then switch to the other. Then you can go back to the first to see if there's any more milk then back to the other. Then stop.

LadyTophamHatt · 20/01/2007 18:53

I am MNing at the same time.....

OP posts:
moondog · 20/01/2007 18:53

Um,at least 10 mins I would say.
Don't do what I did and put it on max. suction first time though.

Jeeeeezuz!!

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 18:54

i had a double pump and would generally go about 15 mins. max.

SoupDragon · 20/01/2007 18:54

At least that's what I'd do I think - I only ever did one at a time really but I'd pump, have a break and then see if there was any more.

moondog · 20/01/2007 18:54

psml at fixing it to the desk.
What a great idea.
Plug yerself in and type away.
Made to measure milking parlour!

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 18:54

[Remembers breathing thru clenched teeth]

LadyTophamHatt · 20/01/2007 18:56

I have an audience of 3 small boys too....

Ds3 says "mummy, it looks like a cows udder"

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 18:57

DD1 still says, 'Your boobies have milk'.

She said it the other day when I had her in a fitting room w/me.

expatinscotland · 20/01/2007 18:58

check out how the nipple looks as it's being squeezed int that thing!

looks about the same after the baby's been feeding off it.
