What to say to people who say "this formula is CLOSEST to breastmilk" -

Hi

I don't want to cause offence to anyone, but in my mind an infant formula cannot be "closest" to breastmilk but I cant get my words together to explain this to people who say "I use "x" formula because it's supposed to be closest to breastmilk".

Anyone help?

Thanks
Lucy

vvq, I'm on [email protected]

Hope you're not going to tell me off about my spelling.

oh, lol at nork...never ever heard that until coming onto mn, but think it's funny if a bit weird, lolol!
Oh, yeah, like Mrs Badger ( I think) said, it rare in the UK to unbutton, you sort of pull up yer top and latch Baby on...and therefore Boob, or nork, is covered....and for the people that want to be even more discreet, they wear a vest top underneath, and pull top up and vest down, and voila no exposed skin!

3andnomore · 08/11/2006 19:56

But MKG, if you don't like to see it, (and I know you say you are not against it or anyone feeding, completely got it)...but isn't there then within you an inhibition? (sp???) that was sort of what I thought of when I said Attitude earlier! Not saying just because you would be a gung ho bfler and wotnot that you necessarily succeed without the right support!

I have to chuckle every time I see the hooter hider. My dear friend ordered one, as did some ladies on her PN club and I think I took the p*ss too much (and sent her links to mn threads about them) as she returned it...

I found it hard at times to not expose nipple/boob to everyone around but it really was a 'blink and you'll miss it' exposure at worst.

AitchTwoOh · 08/11/2006 20:15

poor old mkg, i'm totally seeing where she's coming from now. imagine your mother telling you to cover yourself up... someone once told me that in north america bfing is for hippies.
(my mother, i should say, was all for looking at my nipples because - and i quote - 'oooh look, yours have gone brown. that never happened to mine. it said in all the books that my nipples would go brown but i was disappointed that they remained piggy pink all through four pregnancies...'
er, yes, old dear... step away from my norks...

suzi2 · 08/11/2006 20:16

Oops I should clarify... "I have found it hard at times to not expose nipple/boob while breastfeeding..."

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/11/2006 20:19

at 'piggy pink'

and PMSL at suzi flashing everyone

harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2006 20:26

suzi yer big flasher
Aitch - I went to see one of my new mums today anfd her mum was there talking about her nipples:
"yes the trouble with (X's) nipples is that they are too small and baby can't get a good mouthful, her sister's are the same"

MKG · 08/11/2006 20:35

I totally have an inhibition about it. If you are never exposed to it then how can you be comfortable. I never even though of bfing until a nurse at the hospital grabbed my boob and shoved in ds' mouth. From then on, the whole experienced sucked (no pun intended)

BorisesBurningBush · 08/11/2006 20:40

Really HC?

I was told that mine were "too big".

MKG - i dont think its a lack of exposure that makes you find it abhorrent. Its a negative lack of exposure. I mean just not seeing it would make you curious, wouldnt it? However, someone saying "bleugh, breastfeeding"....that would leave a mark, surely?

harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2006 20:41

oh yes MKG a midwife did that to me, it's appalling isn't it.
the same midwife also told me my nipples were too smll and pointed in the wrong direction but somehow I have managed to bf continuously for three and half years all the same

MKG · 08/11/2006 20:51

harpsichordcarrier,

Most people I know get turned off to bfing when they are in the hospital because nurses nasty. Lactation consultants are worse though.

MKG · 08/11/2006 20:53

God bless you for bfing for so long. I really respect people that can do it. The more I read these threads ( I lurk a lot gathering info) the more I think that it just isn't for me.

hunkermunker · 08/11/2006 20:55

What direction, HC? Towards a Milupa factory?

beckybrastraps · 08/11/2006 21:01

Gosh MKG - at the risk of sounding like the militant I really am not - it isn't for you, it's for your child....

What isn't for you?

3andnomore · 08/11/2006 21:05

Aww mkg..that is so sdad, that you never thought of it until it was chuffed onto your nipple, so to say....so really, please don't take any offence, but you were not the right candidate to succed to bf with little or no support then....and that wasnotYOURFAULT!!!!!!!!!

3andnomore · 08/11/2006 21:08

MKG you say
"God bless you for bfing for so long. I really respect people that can do it. The more I read these threads ( I lurk a lot gathering info) the more I think that it just isn't for me. "
why??????
really am just curious....and I used to be a boob open person (am german) but am now, after living so many years in the UK more inhibet...funny enough...

MKG · 08/11/2006 21:40

beckybrastraps,

I get you, but bfing is a team effort and if one member isn't that into it, than it won't work. I was very put off by my first experience. If I have another baby like ds, I won't hesitate to break out the formula. Afterall, ds is perfectly healthy and happy, and has had formula from day 3 and 100% ffed from week 2.

3andnomore,

It's hard to explain. I read about people's success stories and think, well I might have that. Then I read about other people's problems, and I say why bother. All I can say is I'll try and if it doesn't work oh well. Then I think, well I hated every minute of it the first time around, so why even bother.

Then I think, if I have any doubts, than maybe it just isn't for me.

3andnomore · 08/11/2006 21:45

lol I suppose I am lucky that I am such a lazy moo, lol..because I hated it once es was on bottles amd all the hassle with them!

MKG · 08/11/2006 21:47

I would take bottle anytime. Once you get system down, it's so easy.

3andnomore · 08/11/2006 21:48

mkg...without being a bitch....but dn't you ever doubt that decision....?because...in hindsight...I havevdoubted mine when switchin es on ff

MKG · 08/11/2006 21:49

You're not lazy my sister is. She makes a big pitcher of formula and it lasts a day or two. Her ds doesn't like warm milk (why I don't know he's just weird) She just pours the formula and she done.

3andnomore · 08/11/2006 21:52

but ff should be made up fresh everytime to try to avoild nasty bugs

MKG · 08/11/2006 21:56

No, I never doubted, it was like a weight had been lifted.

Here's my story.

After two weeks of really wanting to succeed (sp) I spent 3 hours nursing ds in the middle of the night. I didn't even buy formula (as we were out) because I was so sure that I was going to bf and we weren't going to need formula. Afterward 3 hours he was still screaming. Dh was yelling at me telling me to feed him, saying "my sisters can do it why can't you" Ds finally cried himself to sleep and woke up screaming. I ran to the store to buy formula. My ds drank more than he usually did, and I knew that bfing just wasn't working. I decided that instead of making myself feel like crap over it that it was better to give up.
Switching to formula was the best decision I ever made. I would never regret.
