What to say to people who say "this formula is CLOSEST to breastmilk" -

Hi

I don't want to cause offence to anyone, but in my mind an infant formula cannot be "closest" to breastmilk but I cant get my words together to explain this to people who say "I use "x" formula because it's supposed to be closest to breastmilk".

Anyone help?

Thanks
Lucy

Look, I have no problems with it all hanging out.
I understood that MKG though the only way to feed discreetly was to shroud the child in a blanket and I was saying that wasn't the case.

WhizzBangCaligula · 08/11/2006 17:26

I wasn't arguing with you BBS!

beckybrastraps · 08/11/2006 17:27

Phew!

hunkermunker · 08/11/2006 17:28

Can I say how pleased I am that it's "discreet" being used on this thread, rather than "discrete". Thank you for not offending my grammar-curmudgeon sensibilities. Or maybe you are all spelling it "discrete", but you're just doing it under flowery tents and I can't see you?

Tiktok, you are making me larf

And Harpsi, my style is "complete loon" - what a coincidence!

beckybrastraps · 08/11/2006 17:29

But what do you dislike seeing?

All people saw of our breastfeeding was ds/dd in close proximity to my chest.

WhizzBangCaligula · 08/11/2006 17:30

Yes I was pleased about the correct spelling too.

What a bunch of old farts we can be.

WhizzBangCaligula · 08/11/2006 17:30

I dislike seeing the e and the t in the wrong place.

It just scars me.

hunkermunker · 08/11/2006 17:30

Speak for yourself, Caligula!

Oh, all right, and me

beckybrastraps · 08/11/2006 17:31

at 'discrete' in this context....

beckybrastraps · 08/11/2006 17:31

Caligula!

hunkermunker · 08/11/2006 17:32

It makes me feel physically sick, Caligula.

FrannyonFire · 08/11/2006 17:34

MKG, I am really sad to hear what your mother said to you when you were trying to get your baby latched on, and that you weren't able to breastfeed despite wanting to.

I would have thought, though, that those experiences would have made you realise that breastfeeding discreetly is not always easy or possible. Your comments about covering up with a blanket make it clear that you have never tried to breastfeed an older, wriggly, baby or toddler.

MKG · 08/11/2006 17:35

Sorry, am not a walking dictionary.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2006 17:56

(MKG actually I think you have spelled the word correctly. which is what everyone is saying. unless they are all being terribly subtle )

somethingunderthebedisdrooling · 08/11/2006 17:59

tiktok, i like it when you let your hair down and have a larf.

bctmum · 08/11/2006 18:24

just rofl at the bf covers - discreet or what!! a great laugh at being undercover!

foundintranslation · 08/11/2006 18:30

FWIW it really grates with me when people talk about bf women 'getting their boobs out'. The sexcualisation of breasts even when they are being used for their natural purpose is one of the factors that makes things harder for bf women.

Typed with one hand while bf 18mo ds, who is wriggling, pulling my hair and whacking me on the nose. PSML at the idea that one of those floral tents would keep him discreetly tucked away. (But oh yes, children his age aren't supposed to be bf any more, are they? ) In fact, PMSL at the tents in general. But at them too.

foundintranslation · 08/11/2006 18:30

that make things harder.

tiktok · 08/11/2006 18:41

at something....yep, I could while away many happy hours as a result of putting 'cover up breastfeeding' into Google

tiktok · 08/11/2006 18:42

WhizzBangCaligula · 08/11/2006 18:50

Agree FIT, "whipping your boobs out/ getting your tits out" is a really offensive phrase in this context. It implies that a woman is doing so as an attention-seeking act of exhibitionism, rather than because putting a nipple into a baby's mouth is a pre-requisite for feeding a baby. Like there's some sort of alternative (and of course there is - bottle or staying at home. And now of course, the tit-burkhas. They are causing me some disquiet. )

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/11/2006 19:28

sorry, but this is a beautiful picture, IMO.

you might have to scroll down a bit

Nothing offensive, or of nightmares there.

Caligula....will CAT you. Dont want to sully a b/feeding/formula thread.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/11/2006 19:32

Oh, and I used to use a muslin square on standby for when DS used 'bob' his head and milk would spray everywhere. He would never leave it over his head though.
