What to say to people who say "this formula is CLOSEST to breastmilk" -

Hi

I don't want to cause offence to anyone, but in my mind an infant formula cannot be "closest" to breastmilk but I cant get my words together to explain this to people who say "I use "x" formula because it's supposed to be closest to breastmilk".

Anyone help?

Thanks
Lucy

What attitude, the fact that I don't like to see it. If I bf baby #2 (due in May) I won't have a problem doing it in public, but I will also cover myself up with a blanket like every other bfing woman I know.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2006 16:16

MKG - I teach pregnant women (I am their professional help ) and I hear all the time that they are worried by attitudes like yours and it puts them off bf. maybe I should suggest they are all referred to consultant psychiatrists?
actually I think it is pretty normal to be concerned and embarrassed that other people are judging them for bf in public.
do you not think that being "scarred for life" at seeing a woman feed her baby is a bit of a hang up though?
I mean, I once saw my brother in law's penis when I was a teenager, by accident when he was coming out of the shower. put me off my bag of cheesy wotsits for sure but scar me for life? nah.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2006 16:17

"cover yourself up with a blanket"
gosh, could I respectfully suggest your get yourself some urgent professional help

hunkermunker · 08/11/2006 16:18

Good luck with the new baby and hope bfeeding goes to plan.

Not sure about covering up with a blanket - mine wouldn't have let me. But I've had people come right up to me and not noticed I'm bfeeding, just thought the DSs have been asleep in my arms.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2006 16:18

(btw tiktok I really love it when you're being reasonable and sweet i.e. ALL THE TIME because it leaves me free to be sarky and pointed )

tiktok · 08/11/2006 16:18

MKG, you mean covering yourself up in a blanket like this very discreet garment here?

Honestly, I can think of no louder way to announce 'Lookie here, world, I've got my tits out underneath this!!'

hunkermunker · 08/11/2006 16:18

PMSL at cheesy wotsits Was he a redhead?

Thank you harpsi

Now, I think you would look mahvellous dahling in one of those breastfeeding tents, don't you??

hunkermunker · 08/11/2006 16:20

Both DSs have often done their best impression of one of those puppets whose arms and legs go in the air when you pull a string located in their crutch while I'm feeding them. Introduce a blanket into the mix and it would look like I was trying to wrestle an octopus under a cloth.

hunkermunker · 08/11/2006 16:21

Er, to clarify, my DSs don't have strings located in their crotches...

harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2006 16:22

he was (is) blonde and madly hairy
maybe i should have thrown a blanket over him
actually I should def leave this thread because I spend my professional time telling pregnant women not to worry about bf in public because who would be narrow minded enough to object to the sight of a baby being fed and I find this discussion deeply depressing
so bloody far to go, so far to go

MKG · 08/11/2006 16:22

Does no one in the UK do that because most women here do?

3andnomore · 08/11/2006 16:23

MKG what I mean by "attitude" is, that you don't seem to have the most positive one...I mean, you were the one mentioning "being scarred for life" after seeing your aunt bf ,etc...

tiktok · 08/11/2006 16:23

LOLling at locket's dh with his handy Spouse-U-Like CoverAll, brought out to stick over her head in case she ate with her mouth full of chips.....

PinkTulips · 08/11/2006 16:23

pmsl hunker

both mine went into proper screaming fits if anything went over their heads so it would be like letting a siren go of to announce to the world what i was doing

To answer your Q, MKG, I can honestly say I have never seen a woman bf under a blanket in the UK - and you just couldn't do it with any baby older than about 2 weeks anyway.

Has anyone else seen it?

I think I'd notice....

CorrieDale · 08/11/2006 16:25

I did once try to cover DS with a muslin when I was feeding him in public, just to try and stop him from swivelling off every time he heard a noise. He was not happy. It was a lot less discreet than my usual whip it out, latch him on, rearrange t-shirt technique.

harpsichordcarrier · 08/11/2006 16:25

nope mkg, I have never seen one of those in rl. dd2 would go loopy, she likes to thrash about wildly and in particular slap my cleavage to make a satisfying WHAP noise

3andnomore · 08/11/2006 16:27

MKG, no, not many people would cover up in such way...because besically it draws all the more attention to what you are doing.
You can feed dsiscreetly and probably more descreetly without covering up...if you want to check out just how much is seen then watch yourself feed in a mirror...!
I have had it so often that people would come up to me to coo at the Baby on the Breast, thinking they were asleep...

but it draws so much more attention to what your doing? and it must be so stuffy for the baby, not to mention like has already been said, lots of babies won't tolerate it
