Night Feeders Part 5. Calling all women who find themselves feeding when they'd rather be sleeping!!

Writerwannabe83 · 01/10/2014 21:07

This is a thread for anyone who wants support when things seem tough - especially for the women whose babies don't like sleep!!

We'll do the usual introductions:

I'm a first time mom to my 6 month old, EBF son. It's been a rocky few months, lots of ups and downs but we've finally reached a point where he's asleep by 7.30pm and only waking once during the night.

He very rarely naps in the day - and when he does it's only when he's in the car or his pushchair. It's very frustrating!!

And the last little thing about us is that we have just started the weaning journey - it's fun but messy!!

I'm not as diligent with winding as DH is- he gets good burps whereas ds doesn't seem to like me winding him. However this week (in trying to get more tummy time) I've found just having ds on my chest helps him burp ( he's on my chest when I'm sitting down and leaning back a but after a feed but no arms over my shoulders) . That position has been good for burping for us I've found.

Sammyviv · 22/10/2014 08:42

Auntie
These are exactly the same issues i am having!!!! Last night was a long one as he was grizzly I think due to wind, I can't seem to get it all out. I tried infacol last night and will persist with it today

Sammyviv · 22/10/2014 20:24

Where is everyone ? On thGrin fb page? I'll pop on and have a look
I've had a trying day today, going to vGrind now, DP is giving him a bottle so hopefully I can get my head down for a couple of hours at least

squizita · 22/10/2014 21:04

Waiting for dd to zzzzz. She's tired but fighting it after a mammoth 3 hr feed!
Tried her in a caboo today. Can't get the neck support right with her comfy- she tries to free her head to look round though she needs support.
Also tried an Avent bottle: resounding FAIL. Will try some other brands and maybe a cup.

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 22/10/2014 22:33

Squiz, exactly the same issue with caboo here. If you sort it, please let me know! Dd just won't keep her head in so I'm constantly holding her which I feel defeats the purpose. Plus it gets really hot? I'm wondering if it might be better in a month or so when it's a lot colder and she's more head control. It was an eBay purchase so don't feel I've lost out too much cost wise and will probably sell it on again when I've finished with it.

squizita · 22/10/2014 23:21

She just woke for a feed. Hope she sleeps after!

AuntieMaggie · 23/10/2014 01:29

I went to bed at 8 after ds went to ssleep at 7.30 but he woke up at 8.30 so dp took him off me at 9 so I could sleep and he woke me an hour ago for a feed so I'm just waiting for him to drop off again...

squizita · 23/10/2014 01:37

She slept till 1. Thought she'd pooed buy just a far and a wee- changed and fed again and back in sleepy head bed. FX she settles again!

cookielove · 23/10/2014 02:43

Yay, I went to bed at 8. Dh bought ds in at 10.30 and I settled him to sleep for 11 thinking cause of his early feed he will probably only sleep till 12.00 he just woke me up Yay!!

squizita · 24/10/2014 01:03

Another night another 1am feed! Wink

Sammyviv · 24/10/2014 02:10

It's so quiet on here now
Well DS has woken after his right on q 3 hour sleep. I still haven't mastered this next bit grrrrrrrr

Sammyviv · 24/10/2014 02:11

Cookielove
Are you breast or formula? How does DH passify baby?

squizita · 24/10/2014 03:59

Dd had her 3am at 3.30. She's now making assorted snuffle snores so I can't sleep. She can clearly breathe so don't want to move/wake her but she takes after DH in the snoring dept!

cookielove · 24/10/2014 04:14

sammy ds is formula fed. Dh either rocks him or feeds him. Ds doesn't go to sleep on him as well as he does for me!

OliviaRinHerts · 24/10/2014 07:17

Up for a feed at 1am and trying to settle him back down after last feed. My ds really does not feed longer than 10 mins from either boob so am a bit worried he wont be getting the hind milk but he is putting on weight so maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily.
I think he is awake and alert now and wanting to play. Sad I just want to sleep

Hope everyone got some uninterrupted sleep!

Cannotbelieveit · 24/10/2014 09:38

Sorry ladies forgot to post here now there is the fb group Blush

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 24/10/2014 09:44

Olivia, from what I've read there's new thinking that there isn't really fore milk and hind milk. I'll have a look see if I can find the info online. Basically as long as they're gaining weight with lots of wet nappies they're feeding fine.

OliviaRinHerts · 24/10/2014 10:06

Show me

THANK YOU!! I can't believe it... Just found this on breastfeeding us.org

So much conflicting info out there!

"There are not “two kinds of milk.” Despite this common belief, there is no “magic moment” when foremilk becomes hindmilk. As the baby breastfeeds, the increase in fat content is gradual, with the milk becoming fattier and fattier over time as the breast drains more fully.

The total milk consumed daily—not the hindmilk—determines baby’s weight gain. Whether babies breastfeed often for shorter periods or go for hours between feedings and feed longer, the total daily fat consumption does not actually vary."

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 24/10/2014 10:12

Ah, there you go Smile glad you found it. I think it's becoming much more widely accepted now that breastmilk is just that, no fore or hind parts. Plus sometimes they just want a snack or a drink, they don't always want a huge feed. Also, some babies are much more efficient feeders than others so will feed much quicker.

AuntieMaggie · 24/10/2014 16:41

olivia ds only f eeds for 10 mins now - I think they get more efficient as they get older

ds screamed from 7 til 10.30 last night for no apparent reason :( hopefully he'll Have a better night

squizita · 24/10/2014 18:21

Yep mine also fed for ages at 1 or 2 weeks and now totals 15 min a feed!

mrsmugoo · 25/10/2014 07:30

The fat content of milk goes up the longer the baby feeds for, I don't think that is disputed. But the idea of feeding for a set time to "get to the hind milk" is rubbish - milk is milk and it all counts to the total amount of nutrition consumed.

squizita · 25/10/2014 11:20

It depends on latch and thirst too! A gulping slightly older baby will drain a boob and get the fatty milk in minutes- a chilled out or younger baby might take longer. Mine used to take 40 min to feed, now takes 15. Poos and wees are BIGGER and she's plenty energetic so I can only assume she's plain eating faster, 7-10 min per breast! Gulp gulp gulp - you can hear her! Grin

AuntieMaggie · 28/10/2014 02:15

So quiet here :(

just waiting for ds to go back to sleep after his feed - I love night cuddles :)

squizita · 28/10/2014 03:36
