Night Feeders Part 5. Calling all women who find themselves feeding when they'd rather be sleeping!!

Writerwannabe83 · 01/10/2014 21:07

This is a thread for anyone who wants support when things seem tough - especially for the women whose babies don't like sleep!!

We'll do the usual introductions:

I'm a first time mom to my 6 month old, EBF son. It's been a rocky few months, lots of ups and downs but we've finally reached a point where he's asleep by 7.30pm and only waking once during the night.

He very rarely naps in the day - and when he does it's only when he's in the car or his pushchair. It's very frustrating!!

And the last little thing about us is that we have just started the weaning journey - it's fun but messy!!

Redling
My question exactly how do you wind a baby when you dream feed them, I've been trying but fearful I will wake DS, the nights I have tried he ends up curled up on my chest and falls asleep then I get scared to move him again so I fall asleep, next thing I know it's morning

squizita · 13/10/2014 00:26

Redling no idea either! I have heard laying them tummy down and rubbing the back can work?

Has anyone had this before... since the runny poo incident, EVERYONE poo has been done nappy off when changing. Any idea why? Like, there was loads after an 8 hour wait this time! ! She can only go on the mat without nappy!

Redling · 13/10/2014 01:47

1.39am feed. I knew it. To keep him sleepy I'll just stick him over my shoulder upright for a gentle winding. He was quite leg kicky before.

Thanks Sammy!

squizita maybe the cold prompts it?! DS always seems to wee when I get his nappy off so now I hold a wipe over his willy as I pop the new one on :)

ShowMeShowMeTheWine · 13/10/2014 02:05

Squiz - dd will poop in her nappy but I always give her a minute or two with the nappy open for some 'fresh air' and she normally poops again! And pees. Totally normal. Also, wiping her bum or putting nappy cream on has the same effect only messier as then it ends up all over me

Redling · 13/10/2014 02:08

He drank 5oz, he can't possibly wake at 3.30 for more. No way. Surely. Fingers crossed.

Cannotbelieveit · 13/10/2014 02:15

Just feeding now after 6.5 hrs for the first stretch m Wink

weebairn · 13/10/2014 02:42

We have rediscovered white noise and the night is going better than hoped....

Writerwannabe83 · 13/10/2014 03:17

Good luck at the hospital tomorrow then Trisha!! I used to work on the Surgical and Medical Day Care units and would often rotate round into the Radiology Department if children required scans under sedation or general anaesthetic Smile

Redling - I remember the days when Arron would spin round in his cot and get his head wedged. Fun times Confused

Arron's had a much better night tonight:

19.50-21.15.
21.30-03.00

I'm just feeding him now and he will hopefully go back to sleep nicely.

Hope everyone else's night isn't going too badly!!

I think I spoke too soon...

He fell asleep after his feed but 45 minutes later he's awake again and seemingly hyper Confused

Dd has had her 4am feed but is gassy. No nappy mess, so not going there! She doesn't burp that much when I burp her so just comforting her after my efforts- it usually comes out eventually! I hope!

squizita · 13/10/2014 05:13

Just changed her. A tiny drop of poo. One bit (at the side) has green flecks in it so will keep an eye.
I hope she doesn't have a tummy bug. I haven't been eating anything different.

Redling · 13/10/2014 05:27

So no feed between 1.30-5! He did wake up at 3 which infuriated me but I just picked him up and rocked for 5 mins and put him back. I knew he didn't want food after 5 oz! He is wide awake now after another 5am poo. Feeding a bit more to see him off. :) nearly DH time anyway, 6am! So if he doesn't settle now I still get another hours sleep!

Cannotbelieveit · 13/10/2014 05:57

Thanks Claire!

Squizita don't worry about green poo in a bf baby, on its own it's nothing sinister.

Feeding again now so night not too bad

7.45pm-2am
2.30am-5.55am

weebairn · 13/10/2014 06:01

Night good here! Feeds at 10, 1 and 6!! Toddler still in bed!!

Admittedly have had white noise playing on my phone all night....

Writerwannabe83 · 13/10/2014 07:57

Grin @ Weebairn!!! The things we do!!

Arron fell asleep just before 5am and we've just woken up so we had another good 3 hours.

All I can hear is lots and lots of rain outside - winter is definitely on it's way!!

Hello all again.

Sorry to hear some of you are having a troublesome time. Ds has got himself in to some kind of night routine which is great for me and touch wood his new sleepy head is helping him settle especially in the day when he will only sleep on me or in his car seat Confused

squizita · 13/10/2014 09:16

Hmm ... NO poo this morning. Nada. Can babies get constipated?
There was a yellow watery stain which could have been the watery stuff around a poo... In which case I hope she won't have to pass a too solid stool left in there!
She's completely ok, but her poo is either very runny and copious or nothing for 9 hours!

mrsmugoo · 13/10/2014 09:23

Squiz - my SIL saw a paed about her DD and was told for a breastfed baby not pooing for 15 days OR 15 poos in one day is all normal! Also pretty much every colour from yellow through brown/green is on the scale of normal! You must stop worrying about her nappies - she sounds just grand and you are doing a fab job lovely.

squizita · 13/10/2014 09:42

Thanks mrs GP just said I should mention it to my mw weekly visitor but should be fine. Grin She said if it hurt her we'd know with the crying!

Redling · 13/10/2014 11:08

We had a naughty on mummy's chest sleep from 7.30-10am! I feel great. He's just gone spark out again and now I need to gather our stuff for his first swimming class! It's just occurred to me that I need my swimming stuff too, I've been concentrating on him!

Writerwannabe83 · 13/10/2014 11:13

squizita - as everyone else has said, BF babies and their poo can be a complete mystery.

When they are first born and their stomachs are so immature their digestive system works on a 'something is coming in (milk) so something needs to come out (poo)' which is why they have a dirty nappy so frequently.

As they get a little bit older and their digestive system matures it is able to hold more poo and realised it doesn't need to empty every few hours and so the frequency of dirty nappies really decreases.

When Arron was a newborn he was having about 9 dirty nappies a day and as the weeks passed this reduced further until he was only going 2-3 times a day, then once a day etc. It is completely normal.

BF babies can go a whole week without having a dirty nappy and that is normal too.

I remember when he was a few months old and he went 6 days without one after normally going twice a day and it freaked me out - but again, completely normal.

When Arron was very young he went through a phase of every dirty nappy being a very strange colour, kind of like a dark mint green, which lasted about 3 days. My health visitor said this can also be completely normal.

Even now at 6 months his bowel habits frequently change. He went through a stage of only have one dirty nappy every 2-3 days to suddenly having 1 or 2 every day. I've no idea why it happened but Arron was otherwise fine so I had no reason to worry. He's back to going once every 2 days now.

Please, please stop worrying yourself. Going 9 hours without a poo is nothing to fret over. Maybe if he goes 9 days without one you can worry Grin

OP posts:
squizita · 13/10/2014 12:15

Writer if she went 9 days everyone in the area should worry (and get a life boat)! Grin She's fed, played and is napping now. So is clearly doing all the things she normally does, not sickening. She has also farted! Grin

I wish they'd tell you that they don't neatly go from hourly to daily at 6 weeks but it can be random! For some reason I thought it would be less random. Duh! Of course it's random, it's baby poo!

cookielove · 13/10/2014 14:42

Ds is formula fed and sometimes goes every day, 2 or 3 times a day to ever 3-4 days he seems pretty happy. Sometimes gets a bit squirmy but he is pretty chilled!

Apart from today where he is wiggly niggly

squizita · 13/10/2014 16:01

We have had a large poo and a wee. :) Chilling while she naps. She'll want a feed when she wakes.
