Breastfed babies have chubby cheeks

Chatted with my dad today and he and his partner had seen the latest pics of my children. Apparently, according to his partner who happens to be a doctor, it is obvious that my DD is breastfed because she has such chubby cheeks.
Anyone heard this one before?

Several Drs said to me that they could tell DS was breastfed, both from his chubby cheeks and his skin. I think the chubby cheeks thing must be nonsense, but can see it is possible that breastfed babies skin might look different. I'm not a Dr though!

ouryve · 28/06/2014 15:28

Nope. Mine were both rather skinny in the facial department. They had squeezy little thighs, though.

scarlettsmummy2 · 28/06/2014 15:29

I always thought you could tell a breast fed baby as they tend to be lean, but that's just from comparing the breast fed babies that I know with the formula fed.

I've heard that dentists can tell by the shapes of the jaw or face or something. It does use different muscles so could be true

Only1scoop · 28/06/2014 15:30

Sound like a load of tosh. Dd had humongous cheeks was never BF.

GermyElephant · 28/06/2014 15:31

I've heard it said about thighs but not cheeks. DS was a fairly solid baby, but DD was properly round Grin

Both BF.

museumum · 28/06/2014 15:31

Could be something to do with the jaw muscles I guess but ime bf babies are generally less chubby overall.

Fattyfattyyumyum · 28/06/2014 15:32

What a load of bollloks. It's milk, not facial surgery / Botox

gamerchick · 28/06/2014 15:32

I would say skin more than cheeks.. although they use different muscles so there might be some truth in it

My HV said you could see the difference between a bf baby and a ff one. Not to do with weight though she said. Just a combination of things. Some obvious like the jaw shape and sucking motions they make when hungry, plus subtle stuff like smell and skin tone.

Yoruba · 28/06/2014 15:40

Dunno - all of mine have had really squishy cheeks and they were all bf :)

BertieBotts · 28/06/2014 15:47

I don't know if this is a BF- only thing but DS is 5 now and still does the baby bird, head side to side thing very very slightly when he eats certain things. Makes me smile!

fledermaus · 28/06/2014 15:49

The way you can tell mine are breastfed is that they launched themselves at any inviting bosom Grin

deepbluetr · 28/06/2014 15:54

My HV says she can tell breastfed babies because they smell so different to formula fed babies,- maybe the poo? I know while being breastfed my babies' poo smelt sweet and not at all offensive. She also says their skin is different- mush smoother and softer.

YourBrotherInLaw · 28/06/2014 15:54

I don't think there is anything in it. Most bf babies I see tend to be smaller than formula-fed tbh. Mine were both mix-fed and had lovely chubby cheeks and thighs. Grin

tiktok · 28/06/2014 15:55

Rubbish.

deepbluetr · 28/06/2014 15:56

Is chubby good? I thgought we had moved on from 1950s knitting pattern model babies.

tiktok · 28/06/2014 15:56

Sorry, that was at the op's dad's partner.

fledermaus · 28/06/2014 15:59

I haven't noticed a difference in skin at all - it fact both mine have had eczema so haven't been smooth and soft.

BuilderMammy · 28/06/2014 16:08

My FIL told me that he could tell who had been breastfed even when they were adults because BF people had much more personality. I suspect there's just as much actualy science behind your dad's partner's observation as behind FIL's.

My two were both formula fed. DD was slightly slim for her length and DS was pretty much spherical. So no consistency there at all.

imme · 28/06/2014 16:12

Ha ha, thanks for all your responses, pretty much what I expected! Tiktok, that was exactly my reaction when I heard it!
Actually, my DD had chubby cheeks from birth..

Nonsense!!

DS1 was BF and not chubby at all, has skin prone to rashes and dry patches

DS2 was tube fed a specialist formula and still at age 4 has round cheeks and the softest skin all over that I have ever felt, I can't stop stroking and kissing him!

deepbluetr · 28/06/2014 16:26

"I can't stop stroking and kissing him!"- aww so sweet, probably all that kissing that has made them so soft!!
