DS won't take expressed bottle. Help!!

AnyFuckerWillDo · 28/10/2013 22:48

For various reasons I would like my DS to be able to take an expressed bottle. My DD took an expressed bottle from 4 weeks without any bother.
Can anyone give me any tips, I've tried different times of the day, different brands of teat tommie tippee, avent, dr.brown. Different members of the family giving the bottle n nothing works. He just gets so upset n I have to go back to BF.
I adore BF and have no plans to stop until he's at least 6 months but the thought I'm not gonna get any help with feeding for the next 4/5 months is Hmm.

OP, I struggled to get DD to take a bottle for months. I gave up in the end, but not before I had bought every single type of bottle, teat and milk imaginable. I understand the feeling of being trapped as the only one who can feed your baby, and tbh it made me rather resentful of breastfeeding for a while. Sorry this doesn't give you much hope, except to say that it does end (although it feels like forever at the time) and looking back on it now it does seem like such as small thing. I actually found it easier to deal with when I finally gave in and stopped trying.

Having said all that, I have my fingers crossed that one or more of the suggestions on this thread will work for you Smile

Awesome AFWD, Having had to switch to FF with DD2 I know the relief when they finally accept the bottle.

I'm thinking of trying the NUK bottle, but on their website it says you can't sterilise them in the microwave. Creamtea and AFWD, do you have electric sterilisers? Will I need to buy a Nuk one? Just wondering if manufacturers make them to fit only their own brand of bottles.

Noisy - I hadn't thought as far as steriliser! I've got an electric one and also old school Milton fluid, so if by a miracle she accepts it I guess I will use one of them.

Just been to Boots and bought a pack of Nuk first choice bottles and an electric steriliser (Avent, half price on offer, result!). They were out of the size 1 latex teats so I've ordered some, which were free as there's a 3 for 2 promo on baby stuff at the moment. Fingers crossed!

Hope the Nuk works out for you Creamtea.

Oh. My. Word. DP has just tried DS with the NUK bottle and latex teat and he got into it straight away. He took around 3oz in half an hour, without a grumble. Not what the carton calls a 'full' feed for his weight, but this is huge progress Smile

Here's hoping we continue in this vein.

Wo-ooooo!

Congrats, it's huge isn't it. I've been expressing n giving DS every day now just so he gets and stays used to a teat.

I've been body pump tonight, it's great knowing I can leave the house n he won't be upset without me Smile

Excellent noisy!!! I so hope it is as successful for me too! It hasn't arrived yet from amazon. Just a thought - if you continue to be ok with the latex teat are you going to try the silicone version as well? And same question to AnyFucker Smile

In a good while, maybe at 6 months when I'm weaning (he's only 8wks). My thinking is he have lots of foreign objects in his mouth then.

Mind you... I got so many different types of bottles / teat may keep having a try x

I really hope our LOs continue to be OK with this combo

Oops, hit post to soon. I was going to say that babies do like to keep us on our toes though and change the rules without telling us so I won't be complacent just yet!
I think the shape and hole position of the NUK teat is better for my ds, so it's possible the silicone one would be OK. I have some in the bottle pack I bought so we might try them further down the line.

Hope it goes well for you Creamtea andand here's to continued success for you AnyFucker (I like the user namename lol!)

So is everyone getting on with the nuk,? I was heavily advised to try the medula one which I have bought but he doesn't seem too keen after our first try today.

I agree with afwd-Yes bf is wonderful but if you have a fussy cluster feeder like I do (8 weeks old and spent the last three weeks cluster feeding all evening) you become desperate for a little freedom, and there's nothing wrong with that.

We had another successful feed with the Nuk yesterday evening. Ds took 150 ml from my DP in two sittings, no fuss. He was smiling and gurgling away at him too in between, it was lovely.

It was the evening cluster feeding that drove me to try a bottle too. Ds still wants a bf less than 2 hours after his bottle but at least I've had a 3-4 hour break in the meantime.

Hi ladies, no success with the nuk for me BUT I had to give it myself as DH wasn't here so probably was a bad idea..will try again with DH later. Another BUT too...I don't know whether its a message to forget the bottle but dd slept 8.30 till 2.30 last night and then back down till 6.15 then down again till 7.45! I was in shock!

Sorry to hear it didn't go well. Hopefully a change of person will do the trick.

We have the same issue. Baby is older though (16 weeks). Have tried TT, medella and Avent. Have ordered the NUK and will let you know.

Having same problems with my 4 month old refusing bottle, left her for a few hours today to go to hairdressers and have lunch with a friend to find that she's gone 7 hours and took less than 1oz of ebm from a bottle. Will also be trying NUK bottles based on everyone's experience on here. HV has given me a doidy cup to try and have also been told breast flow bottles are quite successful too, so might order some of them as well as NUK. Feeling a bit down in the dumps about it as had to cancel going on a hen party tomorrow because of it! :o((

Any luck cream tea?

I was going to get playtex too which were recommended....

Bought the 8oz NUK latex bottle and DS has refused it, it's thinner than the 4oz wide neck bottle.

Hi AnyFucker (lol) - no had to call off the second attempt today as dd decided to projectile vom everywhere late this afternoon, just about round the time when I was going to get DH to try the bottle..so decided not to traumatise her further! Rescheduled for tomorrow. She has actually been sleeping ok at night so still getting over the shock of that!

Ok any advice anyone.
Am panicking - we bought a NUK after reading this thread. DS took 2oz very happily as a night feed last night from DSis but won't have any of it today from DH.
DH says it is too fast - hence my other thread re teat sizes.
I have to leave him for a KIT day at work next week and don't know what to do next. Am feeling a bit helpless as obviously he is even less likely to take it from me than DH.
Does anyone know where I can get the smaller 'tea' teat ? Or do I try MAM or playtex instead.
If all else fails do we use a cup or something ??
HELP!!
