Got sent a market research survey today asking me my opinions on formula milk.

So i gave them.....WinkGrin

If formula were not used, there would be no need for clean water to be mixed with it.

That is rather the point: deaths from mixing formula with polluted water would be prevented. Infants do not need drinking water.

No, I am afraid it is just not about clean water. It is about all the other properties contained in bm which formula lacks. Bm prevents the main diseases that kill babies in poor environments.

But, hey I am wasting my time here !

tiktok I sincerely admire all the help you give to women on here - your help is invaluable.

That doesn't mean however that you're beyond the cutting comment yourself does it?

I've argued before some posters quite deliberately use certain language to get a certain response, for example one poster might say 'unhygienic' and another might say 'dirty', clearly a 'loaded' term and it does make a difference how posts are written.

I think you should take your own advice and be 'sensitive to other people'.

Nice of you to give permission for people to post how they feel about bottle feeding - thank you. Some mums who have decided to bottlefeed might very well feel comforted by the fact that there are mothers out there are indeed confident with their choices on feeding.

You're quite clearly very irritated by the fact that GDG is one of them.

koolkat · 05/04/2006 15:12

Chandra - the main reason for lactation failure in any society and in any country, is the lack of frequent bf in the first few weeks after a baby is born. Lactation failure doesn't just happen. It is usually caused.

tiktok · 05/04/2006 15:13

Sorry, GDG.

I exaggerated for comic effect only.

I suppose I can see why you chose not to get the joke.

oliveoil · 05/04/2006 15:14

oh fgs

these threads always end up the same

JoolsToo · 05/04/2006 15:15

yes they do and I've done very well to stay away for so long - but a mother must protect it's young Smile (even if she doesn't need or want it!)

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 05/04/2006 15:17

"If formula were not used, there would be no need for clean water to be mixed with it."

So are you saying that letting people worldwide have an access to clean water (which makes even breastfed babies ill as they are washed in it!) isn't important.

Dirty water kills a lot more people worldwide that formula does - and it's simply because it's dirty. 4 people die every minute die from it. So I think it is a major issue.

tiktok · 05/04/2006 15:17

Jools - I am perfectly capable of cutting comments, you are right, but (mostly) they're targetted at people I know are robust enough to not be cut by them. I rather think GDG (and yourself) are far from being sensitive flowers - you say yourself GDG is confident in her choice, after all.

I was merely making a point that GDG was criticising the same old arguments and same old posters...while creating her very own Groundhog day with her zillionth reminder that she bottle fed.

That's all.

Chill.

Chandra · 05/04/2006 15:18

Well, I think you should re read the thread because it seems that it can happen even in the more developed places in the world!

With exception of medical cases, I suppose the cause is the same: lack of quality breasfeeding advice. It is not enough to know breast is best if you don't have the means and advice to cope with problems while trying to establish breastfeeding.

It seems all clean cut in statistics but... reality is not that straight forward.

Chandra · 05/04/2006 15:19

Previous post for Koolcat... :)

rhubarbed · 05/04/2006 15:20

good for you. i think everyone should have their own wet nurse. i did

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 05/04/2006 15:21

and I'll tell you something - that we in this country have far better resources for helping breastfeeding woman succeed than many developing countries do. Most of those countries you're expected to "get on with it, because it's natural"....

koolkat · 05/04/2006 15:22

But I do wonder why those that are the loudest and rant the most on this thread claim to be "confident with their choices".

The ranting rather suggests otherwise.

Me thinks the fomula ladies do rather protest too much...

Caligula · 05/04/2006 15:22

Who is clearly a nut job?

Rhubarb · 05/04/2006 15:23

I'm gonna sooooo get her!

Chandra · 05/04/2006 15:24

Are you starting to feel insecure about your points Koolkat? I really don't see the reason to aim that low? are you insecure?

ToujoursMarine · 05/04/2006 15:24

Gabrielle Palmer, presumably caligula

koolkat · 05/04/2006 15:24

The "nut" was either a reference to me or Gabrielle Palmer - whichever - in the context of this thread I feel rather happy to be called a bf fundamentalist ! It's quite a catchy title !

Caligula · 05/04/2006 15:25

And she's a nut because...?

koolkat · 05/04/2006 15:26

Chandra - for me there was only ONE choice and it was breastfeeding. I have a breastfed toddler, so why in god's name would I feel insecure ?

Caligula · 05/04/2006 15:26

bf fundamentalist conjures up some quite disturbing images

ToujoursMarine · 05/04/2006 15:26

I'm not one to answer that, caligula, because I don't think she is one :)

GDG · 05/04/2006 15:26

I don't think formula feeding mother 'protest too much' - I think they just like to ensure balanced opinion.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 05/04/2006 15:27

"But I do wonder why those that are the loudest and rant the most on this thread claim to be "confident with their choices".
"

I'm almost always the loudest and rantiest (is that a word Grin) on controversial threads I'm involved on - sorry to disappoint.

Actually bottlefeeding DS2 was the best thing I could have done. It allowed me to continue doing the one other thing in my life which keeps me 'sane' - my music. I find it very relaxing when I'm stressed to go over to the church and hammer out a few voluntaries and rousing hymn tunes on the organ - even been known to do it at 7.30am on my way back from work if I've had a bad night Grin

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 05/04/2006 15:30

Chandra - for me there was only ONE choice and it was breastfeeding. I have a breastfed toddler, so why in god's name would I feel insecure ?

ahhh - so you've only got the one then?? It was my "only" choice for DS1 too - but for DS2 when it was all going horribly wrong (even with the support of NCT Councellors (sp)) it dawned on me I had another choice - in the name of Tesco Grin (well that's where DH went at 2am in the morning LOL). Poor bloke didn't have a clue what to buy so came back with the works, steriliser, bottles, formula and even a breastpump (bl**dy waste of money that was - couldn't get a drop out - unlike with DS1 where I had a gallons of the stuff.........which he refused to drink unless it was 'fresh out of the tap' - ie out the breast).
