So i gave them.....WinkGrin

BB,maybe it would be a good idea to hand out a leaflet on formula during antenatal preparations.
'Formula-the facts' or something?
Also, maybe its composition does need to be covered in antenatal classes, again something that doesn't usually happen?
A turkey twizzler like expose of the potatoes and fish eyes and algae might really make it clear.
I watched a Gillian McKeith programme where she showed a rather large and unhealthy girl all the hideous stuff that went into a sausage-snouts,guts and blubber all piled up.The girl started crying and saying 'I had no idea'

This is it!!
People have no idea.
We are so used to processed products (of all sorts) that the start of the production line may as well not exist,be it fish eyes or nine year old Asian children putting together trainers.

Been thinking about an earlier poster's reference to that old 'complementing/supplementing' breastmilk myth they peddle.

If you look up the definition of both of these it is staggeringly emotive and disempowering.

complement-'something making up a whole;the full quantity orthe full number'

supplement-'something added to fill up or supply a deficiency'

Rhubarb · 06/04/2006 22:09

I don't think that comparing formula to turkey twizzlers is quite fair. I doubt they have anything in them that is that controversial or even that disgusting.

moondog · 06/04/2006 22:15

You prove the point re processing better than anything else I could possibly add.

Rhubarb · 06/04/2006 22:16

Now now, sarcasm will get you nowhere!

I take it you don't really want me on this thread?

moondog · 06/04/2006 22:17

I'm not being sarcastic.
I'm not telling you to stay or leave, merely find your behaviour really bizarre.

Rhubarb · 06/04/2006 22:19

How so Moondog? I do have an opinion on this you know! How do I strike you as bizarre?

moondog · 06/04/2006 22:20

Refer to post of 9:38.
I only thought about your behaviour briefly I must stress.

Rhubarb · 06/04/2006 22:22

I don't get it? I asked if your post was a question to me or to BornBerry? Don't get the weirdness in that really. But if you prefer I'll leave you to it!

moondog · 06/04/2006 22:23

Never mind.
Not important.
I don't prefer anything.
Every view and opinion teaches me something.
Smile

koolkat · 06/04/2006 22:24

But Moondog, although I agree with what you say about making better info. about formula available, as feeding babies is so emotional (judging by these threads), how can one get better info. across without everyone being so upset and feeling patronised ?

Even scientific stuff on this thread has achieved nothing but emotional responses.

This is a genuine question.

moondog · 06/04/2006 22:30

That is a really interesting point KK.
Maybe it will happen soon.
Processed products now have an amazing amount of info. on them ,thanks to pressure groups hassling manufacturers.
I bought something from M&S the other day that told me what % of my daily 'allowance' of salt, fat, sugar and fibre it included, amongst a load of other stuff.

I would argue that people deserve to know what is in their baby's first food wouldn't you? You can't or shouldn't withold that info. because it might upset someone.

Don't we patronise new mothers in this way? If you're grown up and tough enough to squeeze a baby out of a hole that a few years earlier, you wouldn't envisage putting a tampon in,aren't you grown up and tough enough to take the info about the potatoes and algae and fish eyes on the chin as it were???

TikTok is so right when she points out that choice seems largely determined by the pictures and graphics on the tins.

koolkat · 06/04/2006 22:37

Well, as always I think the formula manufacturers and their advertising gurus have a lot to answer for. If they are going to sell it, then at least they should be honest about it. Putting photos of cherubs on things says nothing about the ingredients !

VeniVidiVickiQV · 06/04/2006 22:38

Agree KK.

See \link{http://www.startpoint.gr/images/LucyLawlessBreastfeeding.jpg\this} that i found whilst looking for something else.

Its lucy lawless doing a publicity photo for breastfeeding week.

I also think that this is almost the only area of public health where people's "feelings" are treated with such kid gloves. When do doctors ever say "well it's your choice about whether to vaccinate your children, of course" or "not smoking is best but of course we don't want to upset anyone who does smoke."

There's something quite suspicious about formula feeding being the only area of public health where professionals and the state are reluctant to call the shots as they see it.

Caligula · 06/04/2006 22:39

What a lovely picture. Who is Lucy Lawless?

koolkat · 06/04/2006 22:39

Caligula - excellent point.

koolkat · 06/04/2006 22:40

Gosh - who is she ? I wish I had her figure and fishnets !

harpsichordcarrier · 06/04/2006 22:40

she is a pneumatic actor who played Xena Warrior Princess
that is a fabulous photo

VeniVidiVickiQV · 06/04/2006 22:42

It is lovely isnt it. A UK "celeb" breastfeeding.......i wonder if that would make a difference?

OP posts:
koolkat · 06/04/2006 22:42

Must remember to buy some fishnets - not for DH - but for DS Grin

VeniVidiVickiQV · 06/04/2006 22:44

not sure about the shoes though lol!

Can anyone find any more like that? Might google b/feeding week......

OP posts:
moondog · 06/04/2006 22:44

Yes Cal (10:38)
That is it!
That is exactly it,and the very reason why the topic has me frothing with rage time and time again.

It is so fucking weird to be angry when people tell you the truth isn't it,re important matters relating to the health of your family.
As I said before, noone goes to the doctor's and says
'That bloody bitch is so judgemental, making me feel bad about my monumental arse, enlarged heart and blocked arteries.'

I don't get it.

Ah LL> She looks damned uncomfortable though!

moondog · 06/04/2006 22:46

I'll tell you what.
Someone is going to sue the Dept. of Health re not making public the true facts about formula and its risks.
Perhaps the ABM is quietly putting together a test case as we speak?

Now that would be interesting.

koolkat · 06/04/2006 22:47

Yes, agree, the shoes don't go with the outfit !

I saw a very beautiful one of an Italian actress breastfeeding. I can't remember her name now. Although it may have been for male consumption more than for promoting bf, if you know what I mean Wink

Caligula · 06/04/2006 22:48

Where's that great one of the president of Brazil meeting normal people? One woman was just breastfeeding casually while chatting to him. It was great.
