If bf when did your periods return?

Booboostoo · 25/08/2012 18:40

DD is 15 months old and bfs along with solids. Consumption varies, some days she is more into solids and will bf less, other days she is still quite attached to the boob, however even on low consumtion days she will bf 6 times through the day and night.

We would like to TTC for another child, but my periods have not returned. I am assuming this is because of the bf but I don't want to stop quite yet. On the other hand I am 39 so we don't have all the time in the world.

Am I right to assume it's the bf that's delaying my periods? Should I just chill and wait to see what happens or is 15 months with no periods peculiar?

For me it was just over 20 weeks, I had gone back to work and was only partially breastfeeding though, but presumably so are you if DD is weaned. I dont know what normal variation is though - why not pop in to the GP or give them a ring and see what they say?

buggyRunner · 25/08/2012 20:23

9 months- when I dropped to 1 bfeed a day (mixed feeding) they weren't regular until I stopped at 12 months and went on the pill

Zwitterion · 25/08/2012 20:25

Mine didn't return until DD had completely weaned at 16 months or so.

I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows her stuff, but there's no harm TTC now - you could catch the first egg out so to speak.

Good luck!

Pochemuchka · 25/08/2012 20:29

My periods didn't return after either of my DC as I got pregnant again! I was still BFing both times.

(Haven't had a period since before I conceived DD who is 3.5!)
There is a 22 month gap between DC1 and 2 and will be between DC2 and 3 which means I wasn't pregnant and still hadn't had a period when they were both 13 months old.
I'm 34 if you feel age might be relevant.
I'd go and have a chat with GP if you need reassurance but there's no reason why you shouldn't TTC just because you haven't had a period.
Good luck!

Dd was 4 months. I then had a miscarriage when she was 10 months. My periods didnt come back and my GP advised me to stop bfing if I wanted to conceive again. Ironically at that point I was already 6 weeks pregnant but didn't get a positive on wee or blood tests until I was 10 weeks, the dating scan turned out to be my 12 weeks scan. I'm not sure if bfing stopped me getting a positive test, I've heard it doesn't make any difference but I can't explain the negative blood test at six weeks.

DD was 18 months when mine returned. I was still feeding her a few times a day, we started TTC as soon as they returned and I'm now pg with DC2 :) - and i'm still feeding DD.

My first cycle was 44 days , the second was 28 (I think! - hard to tell as this is the one that I got pg on) so didn't take long to return to normal. They say the longer they take to return the more likely you will be ovulating as normal when they do come back iyswim!

Also, as my body hadn't ovulated for over 2 years I had a really funny turn when I got my periods back, i had a migraine with numb arm and face - I've never had a migraine before so it was pretty scary! The doctor said migraines can be hormonal and 2 weeks after it happened I got my period. Just thought i'd tell you that in case anything similar happens to you! I hope it doesn't.

I hope you can get on with TTC soon :)

Chocchip88 · 25/08/2012 21:06

About 9 months here, night weaned about 7 months which I think made the difference. Got pg a couple of months later - good luck!!

BuntyCollocks · 25/08/2012 21:18

Mine didn't return until ds was completely weaned.

Twixed · 25/08/2012 21:25

A few weeks after I returned to work so 12-13 months I can't exactly remember. I'd cut down to bedtime and first thing feeds only. But I only had the one period then fell pregnant again so it can happen v quickly!
I hope it works out for you soon.

My periods returned when DD1 (EBF to 6 months) was 7 months, I was pregnant again two months later. After DD2 she was such an efficient feeder (10 minute feeds were standard) and slept through the night for ONE MONTH when she was 3 months old that my periods returned when she was only 4 months old. I was mightily pissed off since she stopped sleeping through the nights after that. They were fairly irregular for months though (again she was EBF to 6 months but she took a bit longer to eat large amounts of solid food) because her sleep was all over the place (and as she got older her feeds took longer as it became more about comfort than food). Got pregnant when she was 30 months and still having the odd feed (maybe two or three a week). So I've got pregnant twice while BFing.

I have a RL friend who had no periods between her first three children. I know other people who have had to completely stop BFing to start ovulating, even though they were having periods they couldn't conceive until after the last BF.

Booboostoo · 25/08/2012 21:33

Thanks everyone.

DD is a very poor sleeper and prefers to do most of her bf at night, so perhaps that explains things.

We are kind of TTC, but 'kind of' because we have no time to try often really!!! If I catch the first egg that would be great, no periods for ages!

Ds was 22months when mine returned -2nd day of holiday with friendsBlush
Dd was 27months - Xmas eve! Angry

OhNoMyFoot · 25/08/2012 21:35

Mine start as soon as I stop bf

StealthToddler · 25/08/2012 21:35

I have had 3 dec and bf all of them between 8-14 months (baby decided when not interested). Each time it had been a few weeks after stopping bf completely that I got af back, and then 1-2 months to conceive. Am now pg with dc4 and it was the same timing!

Tgger · 25/08/2012 22:36

Hmmm, I BF both, periods returned when DS was 5 months and we put him on 2 bottles a day as well as BFs, with DD she never took a bottle and yet periods returned at around 3 months (!!!). So... I think everyone is different. It's completly up to you what you do, but with DD I decided to stop bf at 18 months and it was very very easy to stop then- they certainly do not need it re nutrition, so it is up to you re bonding/emotional benefits which you can get from cuddles and lots of other ways. So, if you do want to try to conceive why not aim to cut back and stop around then?

Tgger · 25/08/2012 22:39

By the way, the night time feeding can be habit- please continue if you want, but I just want you to know you don't have to and that your DD won't suffer. I had to wean DD off it at 8 months- disappeared finally at 14 months- as I was knackered and looking after her older brother too.

ipswichwitch · 25/08/2012 22:55

Periods started when DS was 5 months. Now he's 10 months, still bf and we are ttc number 2.

5madthings · 25/08/2012 22:56

mine didnt return until 18mths+ but i the only had one very light period, ie a few days of spotting and got pregnant the next month.

have got preg twice whilst bfeeding, both times i hadnt got proper periods back, only a tiny bit of spotting.

oh and mine were bfeeding in the night as well, i gradually weaned them off night feeds at about 18mths, very gradually tho!

Belmo · 25/08/2012 23:16

5 months, still feeding 2 hourly day and night. Feel a bit cheated!

cupcake78 · 25/08/2012 23:18

I was odd, started 4 weeks from the day the bleeding stopped post birth Angry. Nightmare

FidgetPie · 25/08/2012 23:30

Mine came back after about 5 months - was still exclusively BFing - like Belco I felt a bit cheated!

nomoreminibreaks · 25/08/2012 23:34

Mine came back when DS was 3 months old and still EBF. HV said they come back once you feed less than every 3.5 hours or something. Never heard that said by anyone else though!

CommanderShepard · 26/08/2012 03:34

Just realised I haven't had a period in three years! had Implanon fitted and never had periods - had that in for 2 years, then had it removed and got pregnant straight away (so no period in between) and then had Nexplanon fitted 8 weeks ago when the Commanderling was 7 weeks and no period so far.

I'm not complaining ;)

HappyAsASandboy · 26/08/2012 05:57

Mine came back when my twins were 18 months old and still feeding about 3 to 5 times each per day, with all feeds being between 6pm an 6 and (back at work and don't feed/express in day). They've been regular as clockwork and exactly as they were pre-pregnancy since they came back.

ObviouslyEgregious · 26/08/2012 06:12

Just before 12 months.
